Public analyses describe one Qweb/Node.js variant as non-essential, network-active and highly dangerous, while an ANY.RUN sandbox report dated March 21, 2025 classified a different sample associated with a TuneFab VideOne Downloader installer as showing malicious activity. Separately, ANY.RUN analyzed a submitted video-downloader.exe in the context of a TuneFab VideOne Downloader installer on March 21, 2025. Its verdict was Malicious activity, with behavior classified as credential stealing, external-IP lookup and screenshot capability. ANY.RUN notes that sandbox results can be influenced by user actions and are not a universal guarantee that every similarly named file is malicious or safe.
Consequently, the useful question is not “Is the filename safe?” but “What exactly is this copy, where did it come from, and what does Windows report about it?”

Do not run an unexpected copy merely to test it. A file is especially suspicious when it appeared without an intentional installation, was delivered by a cracked application or fake codec prompt, resides in a temporary or user-data folder, lacks a trusted publisher signature, or does not match software you remember installing.

Microsoft explains that SmartScreen’s reputation warning is not itself a malware verdict: “No – the Application Reputation warning is not an indication that the download is malicious.” It is still a reason to verify the publisher, source, signature and hash before proceeding. SmartScreen considers download reputation, URL reputation, antivirus results, download history and digital-signature information; an “not commonly downloaded” message is a caution signal, not proof by itself.
Why is video-downloader.exe running in Task Manager?
A process with this name may be part of a downloader you intentionally installed, a bundled component, a leftover after an incomplete uninstall, or an unwanted program that launched at startup. Task Manager shows the process name, not the trustworthiness of its file, so use the file location and properties to identify it.
When the process matches software you installed
Check whether the path, publisher and product name correspond to the downloader’s documented installation. A signed executable in that expected directory can be a legitimate component, although you should still scan it if Defender reports a problem or the program behaves unexpectedly.

When the process appeared unexpectedly
Unexpected arrival, a temporary directory, an unsigned file or prompts for credentials are warning signs. Do not enter passwords on the affected PC until scanning is complete if the process ran and showed suspicious behavior. Disconnect the computer from sensitive accounts and avoid launching the executable again.
How do I verify video-downloader.exe without opening it?

4. Run a Full scan
In the same Windows Security page, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A Full scan checks all accessible files and running programs, so it can take substantially longer than a quick check. Quarantine or remove detections using the action Windows Security provides; do not restore an item simply because its filename looks familiar.
5. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the file returns
If the executable or detection reappears after a restart, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before normal Windows startup, giving persistent malware less opportunity to hide. Save work first because the restart is immediate.
6. Handle scan and removal errors
When Defender reports that a scan or removal failed, install pending Windows updates, restart the computer and retry the scan. If the error continues, Microsoft recommends reporting the issue through Feedback Hub with the detection name, Windows version and the steps that produced the failure. Keep the original path, signature details and SHA-256 hash available if Microsoft requests a sample or diagnostic information.
7. Do not create an exclusion just to silence the alert
In Windows Security, exclusions stop real-time scanning for the excluded item or location. Microsoft warns that an exclusion can leave the device vulnerable, so do not add one merely to make video-downloader.exe run or disappear from the alert list. Investigate the publisher and hash first, and submit a suspected false positive instead.
8. Recover from continuing damage
If malware caused ongoing instability, restore from a known-clean backup or use Windows recovery and reset options after preserving essential personal files and any evidence needed for reporting.
