Where it fits in a WinPE deployment
In Microsoft’s documented workflow, you boot a reference computer into WinPE, identify the drive letter containing the deployment tools, install DISM’s required drivers, verify the DISM version, and then mount or service the image. The x86 command is:

WIMMount registration, the DISM executable on the servicing host, WinPE architecture, and the target image’s Windows version all have to be compatible. A failure that appears to be an executable problem can instead be an architecture mismatch, an unsupported DISM/image combination, a missing driver registration, or a damaged ADK installation.
Is wimmountadksetupx86.exe safe?

- Check the architecture of the WinPE image and the target Windows image. Use

If the file is absent, unsigned, damaged, or in an unexpected location, do not copy a standalone replacement from the internet. Download the Windows ADK and its Deployment Tools from Microsoft, select the components required for your deployment workflow, and reinstall the version that matches your WinPE and image plan.

After installation, open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the ADK DISM directory, and run the x86 setup utility:

A newer host can expose features that an older target image does not support, while an older host may not understand a newer image. When testing, identify the image index and source file explicitly, and avoid mixing an x86 WinPE boot image with an amd64 deployment workflow. If an operation fails only for one image, compare that image’s Windows release and architecture with a known-compatible image before blaming WIMMount.
5. Repair broader Windows component corruption
If the symptom is damaged Windows components in the running operating system rather than a missing ADK driver, use the built-in repair sequence. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update or from an alternate installation source, depending on the system’s servicing configuration. 6. Capture logs and reproduce the exact failure
Repeat the command once after making one controlled change, then save the complete console output. Note whether the failure occurs during driver registration, image mounting, image servicing, or a later task-sequence step. Keep the following with the report:

- Windows architecture and WinPE architecture.

If a deployment guide names a particular ADK release, install that release or a documented compatible one. Keep the installer media or package available so you can reproduce the same environment on another technician’s machine and verify that the executable’s signature and path match.
Should I delete wimmountadksetupx86.exe?
Do not delete the file simply because it is unfamiliar or because a popup mentions it. If you still build or service WinPE images, removing it can leave the ADK incomplete and prevent WIMMount registration from being repaired later.
