xdoc2txt.exe is the Windows command-line program in xdoc2txt, a text extractor for PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument and several older document formats. It reads the text structures inside a file, so Microsoft Word or Acrobat does not have to be installed. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine or safe: obtain it from the EB Studio project source, check its origin, and scan it with Microsoft Defender before running it. Most startup errors are caused by installing the wrong Visual C++ Redistributable architecture, while conversion complaints commonly come from encoding, password protection, the 256 MB default input limit or the way text is stored in the source file.
What is xdoc2txt.exe?
xdoc2txt.exe is the Windows executable for xdoc2txt, a general-purpose command-line text converter. It extracts text elements from supported documents instead of asking the application that created the file to render it. That makes it useful for search indexing, batch conversion, document inspection and plug-ins that need plain text from files such as legacy Word documents.

It is not a Windows system component. A normal copy is supplied as part of an xdoc2txt package, usually as an x86 or x64 ZIP archive. The project’s newest listed release is xdoc2txt 2.21, dated 2023-11-25; its environment table includes Windows 11 as well as earlier supported Windows versions.

Is xdoc2txt.exe safe?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. The project supplies xdoc2txt “as-is, without warranty,” and the available material does not publish a current cryptographic hash or an independent malware verdict for every xdoc2txt build. A file named xdoc2txt.exe copied from an unknown download site could be unrelated or modified.
How to verify a downloaded copy
- Download the archive from the EB Studio xdoc2txt project source rather than a random executable-download site.
- Keep the original ZIP until you have confirmed what it contains. Extract it to a folder you control and note whether you selected the x86 or x64 build.
- In File Explorer, open the executable’s Properties dialog. Review the Digital Signatures tab if one is present and check the file location and other publisher information. The absence of a signature is not proof of malware, but it means provenance must come from the download source and your own checks.
- Right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, or scan the extracted folder from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Run the program only after the scan is clean and the archive’s origin makes sense for your use. Do not add a broad Defender exclusion merely to make the command run.
Microsoft’s guidance is to download apps only from trusted sources and to be thoughtful about which apps you install. If Defender reports a detection, quarantine the file and investigate the exact detection name and path instead of assuming that a warning is a false positive.
What if Windows says the file is blocked?
Windows can mark files obtained from another computer or the internet as blocked. Open Properties, read the location and origin information, and scan the file before considering the Unblock check box. Microsoft’s advice is to unblock only a file whose source you trust; unblocking changes Windows’ handling of the file, not its contents.
Defender offers quick, full, custom and offline scans. A full or custom scan is appropriate when you are unsure about the archive’s origin. Exclusions disable real-time checking for the excluded item or location and can leave the computer less protected, so they are not a routine fix for xdoc2txt errors.
Which xdoc2txt version and Visual C++ runtime do I need?
The project lists xdoc2txt 2.21 in separate x86 and x64 downloads, dated 2023-11-25. Select the executable architecture first, then install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. The runtime architecture must match xdoc2txt.exe, not merely the bitness of Windows.

Microsoft distributes x86 and x64 runtime installers separately. Installing only x64 does not satisfy a 32-bit executable, and installing only x86 does not satisfy a 64-bit executable. After installing the correct package, close and reopen the command prompt or plug-in that launches xdoc2txt and test again.

How do I install and test xdoc2txt manually?
- Download the xdoc2txt 2.21 ZIP that matches the executable architecture you intend to use.
- Extract the archive to a stable folder, such as a dedicated tools directory. Avoid moving the executable after configuring a plug-in unless you update that plug-in’s path.
- Install the matching Visual C++ Redistributable if it is not already present.
- Open Command Prompt and change to the extracted folder with
cd /d "C:pathtoxdoc2txt". - Run a small, non-sensitive document first:
xdoc2txt "sample.docx". Text should appear in the console. - Test file output with
xdoc2txt -f "sample.docx". The-fswitch writes the conversion result to a.txtfile. - If the command is not recognized from another folder, use the full executable path or add the tool directory to your user or system

Keep test documents unprotected and small at first. This separates an installation problem from limitations in a particular source file.
How do I fix “the specified program cannot be executed” or side-by-side errors?
These messages usually indicate that the Visual C++ runtime required by the executable is missing or the architecture is wrong.
- Check whether you downloaded x86 or x64 xdoc2txt.
- Install the same architecture of the Visual C++ Redistributable. A 32-bit xdoc2txt needs x86, even on a 64-bit edition of Windows.
- Restart the command prompt, indexing program or plug-in that starts xdoc2txt.
- Run the direct command from the extracted folder. If it now starts, the runtime issue is resolved and any remaining error is in the integration or input file.
- If it still fails, remove duplicate or partially extracted copies and test the executable from a fresh extraction of the official archive. Do not download an unrelated DLL from a third-party site to replace a missing runtime component.
Why does a plug-in say xdoc2txt.exe was not found?
The executable must be reachable from the plug-in’s configured path. In dnGrep’s January 28, 2026 integration discussion, the example names the application xdoc2txt.exe, passes -8 "{inputFile}", and recommends setting the plug-in’s WorkingDirectory to the folder containing the executable or supplying its full path.

How do I fix garbled or incorrectly encoded output?

For example, xdoc2txt -8 "C:Docsreport.docx" sends UTF-8 text to standard output. If the text looks correct in the console but becomes garbled in another program, check that program’s import encoding instead of repeatedly converting the source file.
Why is text missing, truncated or in a strange order?
Input-size limit
The default maximum input size is 256 MB. Use -z=0 to remove that check, or use -z=# to set a specific byte limit. Removing the check does not guarantee that every very large or damaged document can be converted; it only changes the size gate.

Password-protected files
Password-protected Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Ichitaro files cannot be displayed by xdoc2txt. Supply an unprotected copy through an approved process, or use the authoring application’s own export function if policy permits. Do not try to bypass a password or encryption control.
Stored text order versus visual layout
xdoc2txt generally follows the text order stored inside the file. Columns, floating text boxes, headers, footers and other layout constructs can therefore appear in an order that differs from what a person sees on screen. The result is text extraction, not a pixel-perfect reconstruction of the page.

PDF extraction has separate controls for common layout artifacts:
-o=0suppresses page-number markers.-o=1removes unwanted line breaks in vertically written text.-g=#controls PDF character-spacing detection.-g=0disables spacing adjustment.
Change one option at a time and compare the result with the original PDF. A setting that improves a vertically written document can make a conventionally typeset document less readable, so there is no single best value for every PDF.

Quote paths that contain spaces. Standard output is useful when another command or plug-in consumes the text; -f is convenient when you want a text file beside the source. Preserve the original documents while testing so you can compare extraction results.
What does xdoc2txt require on Windows 11 and older systems?
The project’s newer environment table includes Windows 11 and lists both x86 and x64 builds. It also requires a matching Visual C++ Redistributable package for the executable architecture. Because xdoc2txt parses supported formats directly, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Acrobat is not a prerequisite for the basic extraction command. A specific plug-in can still impose its own architecture, path or permission requirements.
What are the licensing and redistribution rules?
The project terms describe personal, nonprofit and internal corporate-intranet use as free.
