z.exe is not a standard Windows component with one known purpose. It is an ambiguous executable name that could belong to a legitimate application, a leftover startup entry, or malware. The filename alone cannot establish which one you have. Before running, deleting, or allowing it through security software, record its full path, inspect its publisher signature, calculate a SHA-256 hash, identify the parent application, and check its behavior.

One public ANY.RUN sandbox report dated February 21, 2025, analyzed a specific z.exe on Windows 10 Professional build 19045 (64-bit), labeled it “Malicious activity,” and classified it as a stealer. That result applies to the exact sample in the report—not to every file named z.exe. The manual workflow below helps you identify your copy and choose the right fix without downloading an arbitrary replacement.

What is z.exe on Windows?

z.exe is simply an executable filename. Windows does not assign a single built-in meaning to the letter z, and the name does not identify a publisher, product, or malware family. A game launcher, utility, installer, script bundle, or unwanted program can all create an executable with that name. Windows may also display the name when a startup entry or shortcut points to a file that has already been moved or removed.

That ambiguity is why a filename search is not enough. The useful identity is the combination of the complete path, file metadata, digital signature, cryptographic hash, installer or parent application, and observed behavior. Microsoft describes warnings for unknown or uncommonly downloaded software as an early-warning signal, not automatic proof that the file is malicious. Treat an unexplained copy as untrusted until those checks are complete.

Is z.exe a virus or malware?

It may be, but you cannot answer from the name alone. At least one file-specific public analysis found malicious activity in a z.exe sample, so an unexpected copy deserves caution; however, that dated sandbox result is not a prevalence estimate and does not prove that every z.exe on your computer is a stealer.

Evidence What it tells you How much confidence it provides
Full path and parent application Whether the file sits inside a known installation directory or an unusual user, temporary, or startup location Useful context, but a familiar folder can still be abused
Digital signature Whether Windows can verify a signer and whether the signature is current A valid signature supports provenance; it does not guarantee safe behavior
SHA-256 hash Whether the bytes exactly match a known sample or vendor release Exact matching is strong identification; a different hash is a different file
Behavior Persistence, unexpected network connections, credential prompts, or resource use Suspicious behavior raises urgency but needs security-tool confirmation
Defender result Microsoft’s current detection and remediation decision Use the detection name and path when deciding containment and recovery

ANY.RUN reported the SHA-256 73CF98C995A431058B2DDBC3534555ABE404F67CD4BBF64F356860E42D43FE41 for its analyzed sample. A hash match means your file has the same contents as that sample; it does not make a non-matching file safe, and a hash comparison cannot replace a current antivirus scan. ANY.RUN also notes that interactive reports can be affected by user actions and do not guarantee maliciousness or safety.

How can I tell whether my z.exe is safe?

Perform the checks in this order. Do not double-click the file, add an antivirus exclusion, or grant it administrator rights while its identity is unknown.

1. Record the complete path and metadata

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Properties. On the General tab, record the full location, size, creation and modification dates, and whether Windows marks it as downloaded from the internet.
  2. Open the Details tab and note the product name, company, file description, version, and original filename. Missing or inconsistent details are not proof of malware, but they reduce confidence.
  3. Write down the exact error text, if any, and the application or shortcut that launched it. A path under a known game’s or utility’s installation directory is different from a randomly named file in a temporary or roaming-profile folder, but location alone is never decisive.

2. Check the digital signature

In Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. Check the certificate’s subject, issuing authority, timestamp, and whether the signer matches the vendor of the parent application. An unsigned file can still be legitimate, especially in small utilities, while a valid signature can be stolen or applied to software that later behaves badly; use it as one identity signal rather than a verdict.

3. Calculate a SHA-256 hash

Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell without running the executable and use:

Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 'C:pathtoz.exe'

Replace the path with the location you recorded. Preserve the resulting hash exactly, including capitalization. Compare it with a hash published by the legitimate vendor or with a trusted malware-analysis record. The ANY.RUN sample listed above is one reference point, not a universal signature for the filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Establish provenance

Ask which installer put the file there. Check the parent application’s own installation directory, version, update history, and official documentation. If the file appeared immediately after installing or updating a game, launcher, driver, or utility, use that vendor’s repair or reinstall process rather than downloading a loose executable from a DLL or “fixer” website. If no installed program claims it, treat the file as unexplained.

5. Look for behavior without interacting with the file

Review Windows Security’s Protection history, Task Manager’s process and startup lists, and any alert details for the path and detection name. Unexpected persistence, repeated launches, high CPU or disk use, credential prompts, or network activity are reasons to stop experimenting and scan. Do not attempt to “test” an unknown executable by disabling security controls or opening it in an administrator session.

What should I do before opening or deleting z.exe?

  1. Leave it in place while you identify it. Deleting first can destroy evidence and may break the legitimate application that owns it.
  2. Do not whitelist it. An exclusion hides the file from future scans without proving that it is safe.
  3. Capture evidence. Save the path, metadata, signer, hash, parent application, detection name, and the time the behavior occurred. A screenshot or text note is useful if you need support.
  4. Use a known-clean account or device for sensitive work. If the file is already behaving like malware, avoid entering passwords or payment details on the affected computer until scanning is complete.
  5. Scan before making a manual removal decision. Let Windows Security quarantine a confirmed threat instead of force-deleting a file that another program may require.

How do I fix a “z.exe not found” error?

This message usually means that a shortcut, startup item, scheduled action, or application still references a path that no longer exists. It does not mean Windows needs a random replacement file named z.exe.

When the error appeared after uninstalling or updating an app

  1. Note the window title, complete path, and the program that reports the error.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and review entries associated with the removed or updated program. You can also inspect Task Manager > Startup apps for the same publisher or command.
  3. If the parent application is still needed, run its official installer or repair option. If it is no longer needed, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps and restart.
  4. Check whether the vendor provides an uninstaller cleanup step for stale startup entries. Do not replace the missing file from a download site.

When you recognize the parent application

Update the application from its official source, then use its repair or reinstall function. Confirm that the installer matches your Windows edition and processor architecture. If the error returns, preserve the exact path and version information and contact the application’s support channel; a missing file can indicate an incomplete update, quarantine event, or damaged installation.

When no parent application is identifiable

Do not recreate the file. Run a Full scan and then Microsoft Defender Offline as described below. Remove the stale startup reference only after recording it and confirming that it is not part of a legitimate security or accessibility tool.

How do I fix a “bad image,” missing DLL, or launch failure involving z.exe?

A “bad image” or missing-DLL message can be caused by a damaged application install, incompatible architecture, a quarantined dependency, or Windows component corruption. First decide whether the error is limited to one known application or affects many unrelated programs.

One application fails

  1. Write down the exact error text, path, and application version.
  2. Use the application’s official update, repair, or reinstall process. Reboot when the installer requests it.
  3. Check Windows Security Protection history to see whether a required file was quarantined. Restore a file only when you have verified the publisher and path; otherwise let the security product keep it isolated.
  4. Do not download an individual DLL or a replacement z.exe from an unverified repository. Such files can be mismatched, bundled with unwanted software, or deliberately malicious.

Several Windows components fail

Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Microsoft documents DISM for repairing the Windows image and component store:

  1. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth performs a quick check for recorded corruption.
  2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth performs a deeper scan.
  3. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth attempts to repair the component store using Windows servicing sources.

Allow each command to finish; interrupting servicing can leave repairs incomplete. After DISM completes, run Microsoft’s protected-file checker:

sfc /scannow

SFC scans protected system files and replaces incorrect versions when a correct copy is available. Restart and test the affected application. These tools repair Windows components; they do not authenticate or certify an arbitrary third-party z.exe.

How do I scan z.exe with Windows Security?

Windows Security provides several scan scopes. A Full scan checks all accessible files and running programs and can take substantially longer than a quick scan. Defender Offline restarts the computer and scans before the usual Windows environment loads, which helps when a threat attempts to hide or persist during normal operation.

  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
  2. Open Protection history and record any detection name, affected path, action taken, and timestamp.
  3. Select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it. Keep the computer powered and avoid launching the unexplained file.
  4. If concern remains, return to Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan, save your work, and allow the restart. Review Protection history after Windows starts again.
  5. For a targeted check, use the custom-scan option on the folder containing z.exe, but do not treat a clean targeted result as proof that the rest of the system is clean.

Use the detection name, path, and hash when seeking professional help. A generic “no current threats” message means Defender did not detect the file with its present definitions; it does not establish the file’s publisher or purpose.

What should I do if malware is plausible?

Containment comes before cleanup when the file is unexplained and shows suspicious behavior.

  1. Disconnect the computer from sensitive networks. Unplug Ethernet or disable Wi-Fi; do not continue using the machine for banking, password changes, or work credentials.
  2. Preserve the evidence you recorded: full path, hash, signer, detection name, parent process, and relevant times. Avoid repeatedly launching the file.
  3. Run a Full scan and Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Follow the quarantine or removal action Windows Security recommends.
  4. From a known-clean device, change passwords that may have been used on the affected computer and enable multifactor authentication where available. Prioritize email, identity, financial, work, and password-manager accounts.
  5. If the system remains suspect, disconnect it and consult your organization’s security team or a qualified incident-response professional. Restoration from a clean backup or reinstall may be safer than piecemeal deletion.

Microsoft’s guidance for the distinct ZLoader detection includes isolation, account review, updated antimalware scanning, and possible restoration from a clean copy. Do not apply ZLoader-specific conclusions merely because a file is named z.exe; the filename does not identify that malware family.

Why does z.exe keep running at startup?

Repeated startup can come from a legitimate application’s updater, a stale reference left after uninstalling, a scheduled task, a service, or malware persistence. Identify the command and path before disabling it.

  1. In Task Manager > Startup apps, inspect the publisher and command line where available. Also review Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Use the startup entry’s file location option, when offered, to connect the entry with the exact z.exe you inspected. Two files with the same name in different folders are separate identities.
  3. If it belongs to a known application, update, repair, or uninstall that application through its official installer.
  4. If it is unsigned, unexplained, or detected by Windows Security, do not simply disable the entry and continue working. Scan and contain the device; disabling persistence does not remove a credential stealer or other payload.
  5. After confirmed cleanup, restart and verify that the entry no longer points to a missing path. A recurring “not found” dialog indicates that a reference still exists somewhere and needs to be removed through the owning application’s uninstaller or Windows startup controls.

What if a pop-up tells me to call support about z.exe?

Close the browser window and do not call the number, install remote-access software, or grant control of the computer. Microsoft states that its error and warning messages never include phone numbers; a phone-number pop-up is therefore a strong technical-support-scam signal, not evidence that Microsoft identified your z.exe.

If the browser will not close, use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and end the browser task, then reopen it without restoring the previous tabs. Run a Windows Security scan and review installed applications and browser extensions for anything you did not intentionally add. Contact a legitimate support channel using a web address or phone number you obtained independently.

Which fix fits each z.exe symptom?

Symptom Most likely scope First manual action Escalate when
“z.exe not found” after an uninstall or update Stale startup or parent-application reference Identify the entry, then repair or uninstall the parent application The entry has no owner or the file shows suspicious behavior
“Bad image” or missing DLL for one known program Damaged or incomplete application installation Update, repair, or reinstall from the official vendor Multiple unrelated programs fail or Defender reports a threat
Unexpected startup, high CPU, credential prompts, or network traffic Possible unwanted or malicious persistence Disconnect sensitive networks and run Full plus Defender Offline scans Any confirmed detection, account exposure, or continuing behavior
Several Windows components fail Windows system-file or component-store corruption Run DISM health checks and repair, then sfc /scannow Repairs fail, servicing errors persist, or malware is also suspected
Browser warning with a phone number Technical-support scam Close the browser; do not call or install remote software You provided credentials, payment details, or remote access

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a short filename is trustworthy: attackers and legitimate developers can both choose simple names.
  • Deleting before documenting: removal can erase the path, hash, and parent relationship needed for diagnosis.
  • Downloading a replacement executable or DLL: matching the name is not matching the original bytes or dependencies.
  • Disabling antivirus exclusions or protections: this removes a safety control while the file is still unknown.
  • Generalizing one sandbox report: the February 21, 2025 analysis concerns one hash on one Windows 10 build, not every z.exe.
  • Running repair commands as a malware cure: SFC and DISM repair Windows components; they do not investigate third-party persistence or stolen credentials.
  • Calling a number in a pop-up: Microsoft error and warning messages do not provide phone numbers.

After the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for fixing more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, no tool repairs every crash, and its free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload z.exe to an online malware scanner?

A hash-only lookup is safer than uploading the whole file because it can identify a known sample without disclosing the executable. Uploading a proprietary game, work tool, or customer build may expose confidential code, so follow your organization’s policy and use a reputable analysis service only when sharing the file is acceptable.

Will System Restore remove a suspicious z.exe file?

System Restore can roll back some application files, drivers, and startup configuration, but it is not a guaranteed malware-removal method and may leave user data or persistence behind. If you use it, run current Windows Security scans afterward and verify accounts from a clean device.

Why can the same z.exe hash appear on several computers?

A repeated hash may reflect a centrally deployed legitimate application, an identical installer package, or a copied malicious payload. Compare the signer, directory, installation source, and Defender detection on each computer instead of assuming that one machine’s diagnosis applies to all of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is deleting z.exe enough to stop it from starting?

Not necessarily. A startup entry, scheduled task, service, or shortcut can continue pointing to the deleted path and generate errors, while malicious persistence may use another file. Remove the owning application or confirmed persistence mechanism only after preserving evidence and completing a security scan.
