In the original Plants vs. Zombies, Dr. Zomboss is vulnerable when the Zombot lowers its head. Save an Ice-shroom and a Jalapeno: use the Ice-shroom to stop a fireball and a Jalapeno in the snowball’s lane to destroy a snowball. Either plant can then damage Zomboss.
How do you beat Dr. Zomboss in the original game?
This advice applies to the original Plants vs. Zombies final boss encounter, as described in Atombender’s PC guide, version 1.0, updated May 18, 2009. The guide says the Zombot becomes vulnerable when it lowers its head.
- Build strong defensive lines during the first phase. Zomboss sends zombies before the projectile attacks, so prepare to handle them while keeping your counter plants available.
- Watch for the lowered head. This signals the vulnerable phase described in the guide.
- Counter the projectile. Place an Ice-shroom in any free pot to destroy a fireball. To destroy a snowball, place a Jalapeno in that snowball’s lane.
- Use the opening to attack. After the projectile is stopped, either the Ice-shroom or the Jalapeno can damage Zomboss.
- Replant and prepare for another cycle. The guide describes the back-row van and roof stomp attacks as unavoidable, so replace lost plants and keep an Ice-shroom and Jalapeno ready for the next vulnerable phase.
What plants should you save for the Zomboss fight?
- Ice-shroom: Stops a fireball when placed in any free pot; it can also damage Zomboss after the projectile is removed.
- Jalapeno: Destroys a snowball when planted in its lane; it can also damage Zomboss after the projectile is removed.
The key is to preserve access to both plants rather than spend them all during the opening phase. The guide’s projectile instructions are specific: the fireball counter does not require a matching lane, while the snowball counter does.
Does this weakness apply to every Zomboss fight?
No. “Zomboss” appears in more than one Plants vs. Zombies game and mode. The lowered-head and projectile strategy above is for the original game’s final encounter; it should not be assumed to work in every version. EA describes separate Dr. Zomboss boss battles in Plants vs. Zombies 2’s Penny’s Pursuit, but its article does not establish those encounters’ current mechanics. See EA’s Penny’s Pursuit overview for the mode distinction.
