What Magic: The Gathering Set Symbols, Rarities and Collector Numbers Mean

On a Magic: The Gathering card, the expansion symbol identifies the set, its color historically indicates rarity, and the collector number records the card’s position within that set. The small information line near the bottom can also encode rarity, set code, language and, on some cards, a premium treatment. Reading all of these marks together is more reliable than judging any one symbol or color in isolation.

Where each identifying mark appears

Start with the line that separates the rules text from the card’s type. The expansion or set symbol is printed to the right of that type line. It is the visual identity of the expansion, core set or other product sheet in which the card was printed. Wizards of the Coast describes this symbol as set-identity information, so it answers the first collector question: “Which set is this card from?”

Near the lower-left or bottom edge is a separate collector-information line. Depending on the card’s era and frame, it can show the collector number, rarity letter, three-character or other set code, language code and a marker for a premium version. These fields work together: the symbol gives you a visual set clue, while the printed code and number provide sortable catalog data.

The set symbol

Use the symbol to identify a likely set, then confirm it against a current card database or the set’s official card list. Symbols can look similar at small size, and special sheets, reprints and supplemental products can use frame treatments that make visual recognition harder. The set code in the collector line is a useful confirmation because it is printed text rather than an image you have to interpret.

The collector line

The collector line is the compact string of letters, numbers and separators along the bottom. In Wizards’ M15-era example, a card reads 122/269 for its collector position, R for rare, M15 for the set and EN for English. A star between the set code and language marks a premium card in that frame convention. Layouts vary by era, so do not assume every modern or older card places every field in exactly the same order.

How to tell which set a card is from

  1. Locate the symbol. Look immediately to the right of the type line, not at the mana cost, artist credit or copyright line.
  2. Compare the shape. Match the symbol with an established set list or card database. A symbol is a starting identification, not a substitute for checking the printed code.
  3. Read the set code. Record the code from the collector-information line. This is particularly important when an expansion has alternate-art, showcase, borderless or extended-art versions.
  4. Check the card’s position. The number before the slash tells you where the card falls in that set’s numbered sequence; the number after the slash indicates the sequence size in examples that use that format, such as 122/269.
  5. Separate language and treatment. Keep the language code and any premium marker as separate catalog details instead of treating them as part of the set name.

A set symbol identifies the printing context, not necessarily the first set in which a name ever appeared. Reprints can carry a different symbol and collector code while keeping the same card name and rules text. For a collection record, use the specific printing’s symbol, code, number, language and treatment.

What symbol colors say about rarity

Wizards’ historical convention is straightforward: a gold expansion symbol means rare, silver means uncommon and black means common. Wizards summarized it this way in its Anatomy of a Magic Card material: “Gold stands for rare, silver for uncommon, and a black expansion symbol means it’s a common card.” This is the quickest visual check on many cards, especially when the collector line is difficult to read.

Color is not a complete modern rarity system. Mythic rare is a separate category, introduced with Shards of Alara, and its rarity is represented by the code M. Modern cards also print a rarity field in the collector-information line. That text is the safer confirmation when a card has an unusual frame, foil treatment or a symbol whose color is hard to distinguish under lighting.

Rarity-code reference

Code Meaning How to use it
C Common Confirms common rarity in the collector-information data.
U Uncommon Confirms uncommon rarity.
R Rare Confirms rare rarity; the M15 example uses R.
M Mythic rare Identifies the distinct mythic-rare class introduced with Shards of Alara.
L Basic land Used in Wizards’ card-code documentation for basic-land cards.
T Token Identifies a token entry rather than a normal spell card.
S Special Marks a special category in the card-code system.

These letters are production and card-code conventions documented by Wizards. A printed layout can change between frames and special treatments, so use the full line and a set listing when a classification matters for cataloging, trading or inventory.

Historical exceptions that make color unreliable

Before Exodus

For expansion sets earlier than Exodus, Wizards states that all expansion symbols were black regardless of rarity. An old black symbol therefore does not automatically mean common. If you are identifying an early card, date and set must be established before applying the usual color shortcut.

Before Sixth Edition

Core sets released before Sixth Edition did not have an expansion symbol at all, according to Wizards’ card-anatomy guidance. A blank area where you expect a symbol is not evidence that a card is missing ink or that it is a common. The card’s name, frame, copyright information, collector records and other identifying details may be needed to establish the edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why old cards need a complete check

  • Do not classify a pre-Exodus card as common solely because its symbol is black.
  • Do not reject a pre-Sixth Edition core-set card because it has no symbol.
  • Use the card’s era, printed information and a set reference together.
  • For valuable or unusual cards, verify the exact printing rather than relying on a visual color test.

What the collector number means

The collector number tells you where the card falls in the set’s numbered sequence. Wizards’ explanation describes it as information that “tells you where the card falls in the set.” In a number such as 122/269, 122 is the card’s position and 269 is the sequence total represented by that numbering system. The number is primarily an organizing tool, not a power rating, market grade or statement that the card is the 122nd card designed.

Collector numbers let you sort cards consistently even when names are alphabetically inconvenient or when a set includes multiple versions of a character. Sort first by set code, then by collector number. Keep language, foil or premium status and variant treatment in separate fields so two cards with the same base name are not accidentally merged.

Numbers, letters and special sheets

Not every product uses a simple uninterrupted sequence. Tokens, basic lands, special cards and variant sheets can have their own number ranges or category markers. A letter or suffix can be part of the printed identifier rather than a typo. When a card’s number does not fit the main run, check the set’s complete numbering list and the card’s rarity code before drawing conclusions.

How to read a card in one pass

  1. Read the type line area. Identify the set symbol to the right of the type line.
  2. Note symbol color, cautiously. Gold, silver and black provide the historical rare, uncommon and common shortcut, but first check the card’s era.
  3. Read the bottom line. Capture the collector number, rarity letter, set code and language.
  4. Look for a treatment marker. In the M15 convention, a star between the set and language identifies a premium card.
  5. Confirm unusual cases. Use a current set list when the symbol is absent, black on an early expansion, or accompanied by variant-art or special-sheet numbering.
  6. Record the result. A useful collection entry includes set, collector number, rarity, language and premium or foil status.

Premium, foil and variant treatments

Rarity and treatment are different attributes. A foil, showcase, borderless or extended-art card can share a rarity class with a regular version while having a distinct appearance and, in some products, a different collector-number entry. The premium marker in the M15-era lower-left convention is a star placed between the set code and language. Because frame conventions change, absence of that exact star placement does not prove that a card is non-premium.

When comparing two versions, record at least six axes: set identity, rarity class, collector-number position, language, premium or foil treatment and whether the item is a regular card, variant treatment, token or special-sheet card. This prevents a common cataloging mistake in which a borderless or showcase version is filed as the ordinary card simply because the name and rules text match.

How booster products relate to rarity and treatments

Booster contents explain why collectors encounter multiple rarities and treatments in the same set, but pack odds do not change what the printed rarity code means. Wizards’ current United States product guide, accessed October 19, 2026, lists these contents:

Product Rare-or-higher cards Foil and special-treatment information
Collector Booster 5–6 per booster Includes showcase, borderless and extended-art cards, with 8–10 foil cards.
Play Booster At least 1 per booster The cited guide does not state a comparable fixed foil count in the supplied figures.
Set Booster 1–4 per booster The cited guide does not state a comparable fixed foil count in the supplied figures.

These are current US guide figures and can change with product releases or regional packaging. They describe what a sealed product may contain, not a guarantee that every rare-or-higher card has the same treatment or collector number. Once a card is opened, identify the individual printing from its symbol and collector line.

Common identification mistakes and fixes

“The symbol is black, so it must be common.”

That conclusion fails for expansion sets earlier than Exodus, where every symbol was black. Check the card’s set and era, then use the rarity code or an authoritative set list.

“There is no symbol, so the card is counterfeit or incomplete.”

Pre-Sixth Edition core sets did not use expansion symbols. Confirm the edition through the card’s other printed characteristics before judging authenticity.

“The collector number is the card’s rarity or value.”

It is a position in the set’s sequence. Rarity is a separate field, and market value depends on factors outside the number itself, including demand, condition, print run and treatment.

“A foil is a different rarity.”

Foil or premium status describes treatment. Read the rarity letter independently, then record the treatment separately.

“The set symbol alone proves the exact printing.”

Reprints and variant sheets can share a name while differing in code, number, language or treatment. Verify the complete collector line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical cataloging format

For a spreadsheet, inventory app or binder index, use one row per physical printing. A compact record can contain:

  • Set code and set name: taken from the collector line and confirmed against a set list.
  • Collector number: preserve the printed number and any letter or suffix.
  • Card name: the front-face name.
  • Rarity: C, U, R, M or another documented category.
  • Language: retain the printed language code.
  • Treatment: regular, foil or premium, showcase, borderless, extended-art, token or special sheet.

Sort by set code and collector number, then filter by language and treatment. This mirrors the organizing purpose Wizards assigns to collector numbers while keeping attributes that can otherwise be lost in a single text label.

What to remember when identifying a card

The fastest reliable method is a two-stage check: use the symbol to locate the set, then use the collector line to confirm the set code, number, rarity and language. Treat gold, silver and black as historical rarity clues rather than universal rules; mythic rare uses its own category, and early cards are governed by important exceptions. Finally, keep premium treatment and product type separate from rarity so reprints, foils and special-sheet cards remain correctly identified.
