What Makes a Fighting Game a Roguelike? A Beginner’s Guide

By VGSources Team 10 min read

A fighting game becomes roguelike-inspired when its direct combat is placed inside repeatable runs: encounters, routes, rewards or modifiers vary between attempts, and losing sends you back to a reset point. The combat determines whether it is a fighting game; the run structure determines whether roguelike or roguelite is a useful label. If meaningful abilities, weapons or stats persist after defeat, roguelite is usually the more precise term.

Start with the two halves of the definition

The easiest way to classify a hybrid is to separate its identity into two systems. First ask what the player does moment by moment. Then ask how those moments are arranged across attempts.

The fighting-game half

A fighting game is built around direct character combat. The player reads an opponent, chooses an attack or defensive response, controls distance, executes inputs and manages a health bar or another clear win condition. Precise timing, special moves, combo sequences, blocks, dodges, counters and matchup knowledge are usually central.

That definition includes more than one presentation. A one-on-one duel with rounds is the familiar format, but a game can retain fighting-game fundamentals while changing the camera, adding teams or placing battles in a larger progression. The key question is whether success depends on interactive combat decisions against an opponent, not merely on moving through a level and striking whatever appears.

The roguelike half

A roguelike is organized around runs rather than a permanently fixed campaign. Content is procedurally generated or selected from changing possibilities, death or defeat ends the current attempt, and the player starts again from the beginning or another defined reset point. PlayStation summarizes the modern baseline as games “characterised by levels that are procedurally generated.”

Modern usage is broader than the historical meaning. “Roguelike” originally referred to games closely modeled on Rogue—especially turn-based dungeon-crawling role-playing systems. Many contemporary action games borrow only the repeatable-run structure. For a beginner, describing the mechanics first is more useful than insisting on a single disputed label.

Five tests for a fighting-game roguelike

A convincing hybrid normally passes all five tests below. One isolated feature, such as random arenas, is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. The combat still requires fighting-game decisions

During an encounter, you should be reading an opponent’s animation or behavior, selecting attacks, defending, managing spacing and executing moves under pressure. Combos may be short or elaborate; a game may use a side view, an overhead view or a three-dimensional arena. What matters is the interactive combat relationship.

A sequence of ordinary beat-’em-up encounters does not automatically become a traditional fighting game. In a beat-’em-up, the emphasis is often on moving through space while handling groups of enemies. A fighting game, by contrast, makes the opponent’s immediate response—and your answer to it—the central problem. Hybrids can sit between these formats, but the distinction should be stated rather than assumed.

2. Encounters are arranged into repeatable runs

The player does not simply select a permanent arcade ladder and replay identical matches. A run might contain a sequence of fights, arenas, modifiers, rewards and routes. The next attempt can present a different opponent order, a different arena, another rule set or a new reward choice.

Variation can be fully procedural or assembled from authored pieces. The important feature is that the player makes another attempt through a meaningfully changed sequence, not merely presses “continue” after a conventional match loss.

3. Defeat ends the current attempt

A run needs a consequential failure rule. Losing a fight may end the entire attempt, or a later defeat may do so after several encounters. The player then returns to the start or to a clearly defined reset point and rebuilds the run.

This is the modern meaning of run-based “permadeath.” It usually means the current character state, route and temporary rewards are lost—not that every account-wide unlock or save file is erased. A game can therefore have severe run failure while still offering long-term progression.

4. Choices change the next fights

Roguelike structure is more than random decoration. Between encounters, the player should make decisions that alter the run: choose a branch, accept a modifier, select one reward over another, recruit a character, change a move set or gamble on a harder route.

Those choices create adaptation. A player who receives a defensive bonus may approach the next opponent differently from one who receives a damage amplifier. Route choices can trade safety for stronger rewards. Without decisions that affect how later encounters are played, randomness is mostly cosmetic.

5. Check what persists after a loss

Record what survives the reset. If weapons, abilities, stats, characters or other meaningful upgrades carry into future attempts, the game fits the broader term roguelite more comfortably. If the run resets almost everything and long-term carryover is minimal, “roguelike” may be appropriate, subject to the game’s own established terminology.

The distinction is not a universal legal test. Developers and communities use the words differently, and some games deliberately use both. Treat persistence as a descriptive clue, not a reason to reject the game’s own label.

What changes from one run to the next?

When someone asks whether a fighting game is roguelike, identify the source of variation. Several kinds can coexist:

  • Opponent order: the same roster appears in a different sequence, changing when you face particular matchups.
  • Arena selection: stages or hazards are selected from a pool, altering spacing and movement.
  • Rules and modifiers: a fight may add damage changes, special hazards, altered resources or other temporary conditions.
  • Rewards: victories offer different upgrades, moves, items or stat changes.
  • Branching routes: a map or portal choice lets you choose safer, harder or more lucrative encounters.
  • Character access: the available fighter or team can change, requiring a different approach to execution and matchup knowledge.

Not every hybrid uses all six. A fixed set of fights with randomly selected rewards can still be run-based if those rewards and defeat rules reshape repeated attempts. Conversely, a standard fighting-game arcade mode with a few random modifiers may remain an arcade mode rather than a roguelike.

Roguelike versus roguelite: what does a reset actually reset?

The practical distinction is the treatment of progression.

Question Roguelike-leaning answer Roguelite-leaning answer
What survives defeat? Little or none of the run’s power and equipment Meaningful stats, weapons, abilities or other upgrades remain available
What begins again? The route, encounters and temporary build The route and temporary build, while persistent progression remains
How does the player improve? Through knowledge, execution and adaptation Through those skills plus lasting unlocks or upgrades
Useful label for a fighting hybrid Roguelike-inspired fighter, if the reset is close to complete Fighting-game roguelite or roguelite fighter

“Does permadeath have to reset everything?” No. The current run must be lost in a meaningful way, but a modern roguelite can preserve permanent unlocks. The defining reset concerns the attempt you are playing; it does not necessarily delete the entire profile.

Some games use “roguelike” as a broad storefront category even when they retain substantial progression. If terminology conflicts, explain the actual reset and persistence rules so readers know what to expect.

Traditional fighting game or fighting-game roguelite?

Axis Traditional fighting game Fighting-game roguelite hybrid
Match structure Discrete rounds or matches against a chosen opponent A sequence of encounters inside a run
Content stability Arenas, matchups and rules are mostly fixed Opponent order, arenas, modifiers or rewards vary
Failure Match loss; retry the match or bracket The run ends or resets; start a new run
Progression Character mastery and sometimes fixed unlocks Temporary run builds plus possible persistent unlocks
Main skill test Reading, execution, spacing and matchup knowledge Those skills plus adaptation to random offers and route choices
Best label Fighting game Roguelite, roguelike-inspired fighter or hybrid, depending on reset and persistence

A random opponent or stage does not by itself move a game into the right-hand column. The variation must be part of a repeatable attempt with consequential failure and decisions that affect later encounters.

How the hybrid loop works in practice

  1. Start an attempt. Choose a fighter, team or initial loadout. At this point, the game may provide only a small number of options.
  2. Enter the first encounter. Use the fighting system—attacks, defense, movement, specials and combos—to win rather than simply clearing a linear crowd.
  3. Take a reward or route. Select an upgrade, modifier, character choice or portal. Read what it changes before committing, because the decision should affect later fights.
  4. Adapt to the next matchup. A new opponent, arena or rule changes the problem. Apply your base execution skills while adjusting the temporary build and spacing plan.
  5. Continue until the run ends. A successful run may culminate in a boss or final sequence; a defeat may return you to the start or another reset point.
  6. Use what persists, if anything. Permanent unlocks can open future options, but the next attempt still rebuilds its temporary route and combat state.

This loop explains why the genres complement each other. Fighting-game skill supplies the moment-to-moment mastery, while the run layer supplies uncertainty, planning and a reason to approach familiar combat under new conditions.

Examples that clarify the boundaries

Absolum: beat-’em-up combat inside a roguelite structure

PlayStation presents Absolum as a beat-’em-up with roguelite elements. Its randomized dangers and diverging routes show how real-time brawling can be placed inside a run without becoming a Street Fighter-style one-on-one duel.

That distinction matters. The game demonstrates the run principles—changing dangers, routes and repeated attempts—while its combat format remains a beat-’em-up. Calling every roguelite brawler a fighting game would erase the difference between crowd-focused traversal and direct duel-focused combat.

Returnal: a roguelike structure attached to a shooter

PlayStation labels Returnal a “third-person roguelike shooter.” Its shape-shifting procedural world and repeated restarts after death make the run layer explicit, while its moment-to-moment combat is built around survival shooting rather than fighting-game duels.

This is a useful comparison because it proves “roguelike” describes the structure around combat, not one mandatory combat genre. Shooters, platform fighters, beat-’em-ups and traditional fighters can all borrow the same reset-and-rebuild framework.

The Tower of Doooom: controlled branching in a roguelite mode

Ubisoft describes The Tower of Doooom, a Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope downloadable-content mode, as a roguelite game mode based on replayability. It contains 10 successive battles and multiple portal choices, creating many possible runs.

The example highlights two important ingredients: a defined sequence of encounters and branching decisions between them. A run does not need limitless procedural generation; authored battles can still produce roguelite variety when route choices and resets change how attempts unfold.

Are beat-’em-up roguelites the same as fighting games?

No. They share real-time combat, but their interaction model differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Traditional fighting games usually center on one-on-one or small-team exchanges where spacing, frame timing, defense and matchup knowledge dominate.
  • Beat-’em-ups generally emphasize movement through a stage, crowd control, environmental positioning and repeated groups of enemies.
  • Platform fighters use movement and attacks in platforming spaces, often with ring-outs or percentage-based damage rather than a conventional health-bar duel.
  • Shooters make aiming, cover, movement and resource management the primary combat interactions.

Each format can become roguelike-inspired if it adds changing runs, meaningful failure and route or build choices. Use a compound description—such as “beat-’em-up roguelite” or “platform-fighter roguelike mode”—when the combat format matters as much as the run structure.

Common classification mistakes

“It has random stages, so it is roguelike.”

Randomness alone is insufficient. A game needs a repeatable attempt structure and a reset that makes the next run meaningfully different. Random stage selection in a conventional versus mode may simply be a random-stage option.

“Any game with a boss ladder is a roguelike.”

A fixed arcade ladder has a sequence, but it may lack procedural variation, branching choices or run-specific builds. If every attempt presents the same opponents and rules and defeat only asks you to retry a match, “arcade mode” is the clearer description.

“Roguelite means the game is easier.”

Roguelite describes persistence, not difficulty. Permanent upgrades can make later attempts stronger, but the game may still demand difficult execution and adaptation.

“A roguelike must be turn-based.”

That is the historical purist position, tied to Rogue’s structure. Modern usage includes real-time action games such as the examples above. State which meaning you are using instead of treating the disagreement as a contradiction.

“Every defeat deletes all progress.”

Run failure normally deletes the temporary build and route. Persistent characters, abilities, stats or unlocks may remain, which is why roguelite is often the more precise word.

A quick checklist for classifying a game

Answer these questions in order:

  1. Is direct opponent interaction—attacking, defending, spacing and executing moves—the central moment-to-moment challenge?
  2. Are fights grouped into attempts that can be replayed from a start or reset point?
  3. Can the next attempt differ in opponents, arenas, modifiers, rewards or route?
  4. Does losing end the current attempt rather than merely restart one conventional match?
  5. Do choices between fights alter the build or the encounters that follow?
  6. Do meaningful stats, weapons, abilities or unlocks persist after defeat?

If the first answer is no, describe the game by its actual combat genre and add “roguelike” or “roguelite” only for the run structure. If the first five answers are yes, it is reasonable to call it a fighting-game roguelike-inspired hybrid. A yes to the final question usually favors “fighting-game roguelite.”

How to explain the label to another player

Lead with mechanics rather than genre shorthand. A precise description might be: “It is a beat-’em-up with roguelite runs: each attempt strings together changing encounters and route choices, defeat resets the run, and some upgrades persist.” For a duel-focused game, say: “It keeps fighting-game combat—spacing, specials, defense and combos—but places matches in randomized runs with temporary builds.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This wording answers the practical questions a new player has: What kind of combat will I perform? What changes between attempts? What do I lose when I fail? What carries over? The label then becomes a useful summary instead of an argument about genre boundaries.

What to remember

  • Fighting-game identity comes from the combat interaction: reading opponents, executing attacks, defending, spacing and meeting a clear win condition.
  • Roguelike identity comes from repeatable runs with changing content, meaningful defeat and a reset.
  • Random content by itself does not qualify a game; the variation must shape repeated attempts and decisions.
  • Persistent upgrades usually make “roguelite” the more accurate term, even when the current run is lost on defeat.
  • Beat-’em-ups, shooters, platform fighters and one-on-one fighters can all borrow roguelike systems while remaining distinct combat formats.
  • When labels conflict, describe the actual combat, run structure, failure rule and persistence instead of relying on one word.
