Death often puts a carried resource at risk, while demanding bosses, careful exploration, and flexible character builds reinforce that loop. These are familiar conventions, not a formal checklist every game must satisfy.
Combat is about timing and commitment
Soulslike combat asks players to watch opponents, recognize attack patterns, and choose when to strike, dodge, or parry. Bandai Namco describes combat in the Souls series as focused on precise timing and evasion, with a simple-to-learn but challenging-to-master rhythm (Bandai Namco Europe’s Elden Ring overview). Its discussion of the series and Elden Ring likewise emphasizes reading enemy intentions and attacking during openings.

The key is commitment: an attack or defensive move takes time, so acting at the wrong moment can leave a character vulnerable. Success tends to come from understanding an enemy’s behavior and positioning, rather than repeatedly attacking without regard for its next move. Individual games vary in how forgiving their timing and recovery windows feel.
Death usually teaches a lesson—and may cost a resource
In many Soulslikes, dying is part of the retry loop, but it is not necessarily free. A common design is to risk losing a carried currency or other resource used for upgrades if the player dies before reaching a checkpoint or recovering it. The precise rules differ by game, so “you lose all your progress” is not a reliable description: a failed attempt may put a resource at risk without erasing completed exploration, unlocked routes, or other forms of progress.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Dark Souls, described the intended rhythm as: “You try something, die, learn from your mistakes, and eventually overcome those mistakes.” (PlayStation.Blog interview, 4 February 2011.) Death gives the player information: which attack was mistimed, where an enemy was waiting, or whether a different route or tactic might work.
Bosses test what the player has learned
Boss fights often concentrate a game’s combat demands into a sustained test of observation, timing, positioning, and adaptation. They can also act as progression gates: a player may need to defeat a boss before reaching the next major area or story beat. Bandai Namco’s series discussion describes bosses as skill tests and barriers to further progress.

“Hard” is only part of the point. A boss that punishes a familiar mistake encourages the player to change timing, recognize a new pattern, or adjust equipment and tactics. The challenge is shaped by the whole retry experience, too: checkpoint placement determines how much ground a player must cover before getting another attempt.

Exploration and builds give players ways to adapt
Explore for routes, items, and safer approaches
Soulslikes often reward close attention to the environment with hidden paths, items, or useful shortcuts. Earlier Souls games are commonly described as more linear yet interconnected, while Elden Ring gives players a broad open world and more freedom to choose the order of many challenges. That difference matters: a difficult obstacle in a more open game may be something to return to later, rather than a mandatory next step. Bandai Namco outlines this contrast in its discussion of level structure and Elden Ring; FromSoftware director Miyazaki also discussed the game’s freedom and progression in a PlayStation.Blog interview.

Choose equipment and stats to suit your approach
Weapons and gear can change how combat feels, while stats, skills, and other tools provide ways to tailor a character or respond to a challenge. The range of options is not the same in every game, but equipment choice is a meaningful part of the genre’s familiar design. Miyazaki put the emphasis on player preference in the 2011 interview: “We want to give players many options, even if that means they use the sword that ‘fits best in the hand.’” (PlayStation.Blog.)

The term describes a cluster of conventions, not an official standard that every game must meet. A game may share the deliberate combat and consequential death loop but offer a different level structure, checkpoint system, or degree of build freedom. Even within FromSoftware’s own games, the shape of progression can vary: the more open structure of Elden Ring gives players greater freedom over which challenges to tackle and when.

When deciding whether a game fits the label, look at how its systems work together: does combat reward reading patterns and timing actions; does death create a meaningful retry or resource risk; do bosses commonly test mastery or gate progress; and do exploration and character choices support adaptation? Difficulty alone does not answer the question. Bandai Namco’s publisher descriptions are useful accounts of the series and Elden Ring, while Miyazaki’s interviews explain design intentions for particular games; neither establishes a neutral, exhaustive genre rulebook.
