Before considering PS5 homebrew, check the console’s exact system software version and compare it with current documentation for a specific project. Compatibility depends on the firmware and exploit involved; there is no universal jailbreak range. Staying on older software may preserve a particular exploit option, while updating can improve security and usability and may be needed for newer games or updates. Modification also carries risks under Sony’s system software licence, and there is no established guarantee that a reset will make a modified console safe to reconnect to PlayStation services.
What PS5 jailbreak compatibility depends on
Homebrew compatibility is tied to an exact firmware version and a particular exploit chain. A claim that one project supports a certain range does not establish support for every jailbreak, payload, or homebrew application. Check the documentation for the specific project and confirm that it is recent enough to reflect changes in system software.

Compatibility ranges can differ sharply. The PS5 HEN project’s GitHub description lists firmware 1.00 to 4.51 (project documentation; crawled for this coverage). Separately, Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that the Relapse release it covered supported firmware 7.00 through 13.60 (report). These are project-specific snapshots, not a general compatibility promise or a guarantee that a given console can use them.
Community project documentation and reporting show why a broad label such as “PS5 jailbreak” is not enough to make a decision. Compatibility changes as firmware and exploit availability change. For example, the PS5CEMU-HAR HEN setup documentation describes its own requirements (project documentation), while Ars Technica’s September 2026 report describes broader developments in the scene (report). Neither replaces checking the current instructions for the particular project you are evaluating.

How to think about updating versus staying on older firmware
Updating has a real tradeoff. Sony says system software updates can add features, improve usability, and enhance security. Its PS5 Safety Guide states: “By updating the system software of the PS5 console, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.” (Sony PS5 Safety Guide, English edition.) On the other hand, community instructions warn that updating may remove compatibility with a particular exploit, and newer games or updates can require newer firmware.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Consider the exact console version, the documented range for the project you are evaluating, the games and online features you use, and whether you are comfortable with unsupported modification. Do not assume that remaining on old firmware is always preferable, or that every new game requires the latest release. The Relapse report above is a dated example: it described support through firmware 13.60 while noting that newer games already demanded firmware 14.00 at the time of publication.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
What Sony’s licence says about unauthorized modification
Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits, among other things, using modified or unauthorized software, bypassing PS5 security or authentication, downgrading, and exploiting system software outside authorized use. It describes possible consequences if Sony determines that the agreement has been violated, including restrictions on some software or PlayStation access and denial of warranty, repair, or other services (US agreement). These are contractual remedies Sony says it may impose; they do not establish that every modified console will face every consequence.

Why a factory reset is not a guaranteed way back
The available documentation does not establish a universal clean rollback after modification or guarantee that reconnecting to PlayStation services is safe. A factory reset should not be treated as proof that all effects of an unsupported modification have been removed, or that enforcement is impossible. If official online access, warranty coverage, or service eligibility matters to you, account for that uncertainty before making a change.

Sony says that if an update is unavailable over the internet, system software can also be updated using a game disc or a USB drive, as described in its PS5 Safety Guide. A compatible USB flash drive may therefore be useful for official update or recovery preparation. It is not a jailbreak requirement and does not itself enable homebrew.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify the console’s exact installed system software version before deciding whether to update or pursue homebrew.
- Find current documentation for the specific project and verify that its stated firmware range includes that exact version.
- Weigh the project’s documented compatibility against the updates, online features, and game requirements you rely on.
- Read the PlayStation software licence for your region and decide whether the stated contractual risks are acceptable to you.
- Do not rely on promises of a clean reset, undetectability, or guaranteed restoration of online access.
