Each Star brings personal beliefs, loyalties and relationships into a shared political conflict, connecting individual stories to the history the characters are shaping.
What are the 108 Stars of Destiny?
The 108 Stars are the central ensemble gathered around each game’s conflict. In Suikoden I, Konami calls them the “Stars of Heaven and Earth” and describes them gathering “to shape the course of their history.” Their reasons for taking part differ: Konami names ideals, honor, friendship, loyalty, love and ambition among the forces that send people to the battlefield. They are therefore not simply 108 interchangeable party members; they represent people with different stakes in a country at war. Konami’s Suikoden I story page

Why do the 108 Stars matter to Suikoden’s story?
They give political conflict a human scale
The Stars gather amid rebellion in Suikoden I, where a once-renowned hero becomes a tyrant and a Liberation Army rises against oppressive rule. The cast’s differing beliefs make the struggle more than a simple division between a single good side and a single bad side: people join the conflict for distinct reasons, and their loyalties help show what the war means to them.

In a March 2025 interview, Suikoden I&II producer Rui Naito described the appeal as a combination of emotional connections to characters and the weight of decisions involving them. He said those elements help make each playthrough feel unique. He also pointed to political intrigue, an epic world and personal stories woven into the main conflicts. That is the Stars’ distinctive narrative role: intimate histories and relationships become part of a national struggle. MeriStation’s interview with Rui Naito, updated March 9, 2025

Why are there 108 characters in Suikoden?
The number identifies the Stars of Destiny as a group; it does not mean every named character in a game belongs to that group. Konami describes Suikoden II as having a cast of over 140 characters, including the 108 Stars, members of the City-States of Jowston and Highland enemies. The distinction matters: the story’s wider cast includes people and factions beyond the Stars themselves. Konami’s Suikoden II story page
Do all 108 Stars join the same side?
No single answer applies across the series. The Stars are gathered in the context of each game’s particular conflict, and the conflicts differ. In Suikoden I, they gather amid the Liberation Army’s fight against oppressive rule. In Suikoden II, the central war is between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston. Konami’s description of the first game emphasizes that the Stars carry their own beliefs; its description of the second also distinguishes the Stars from Jowston members and Highland enemies in the broader cast. The 108 are a narrative ensemble, not a claim that every character in a game belongs to one uniform faction.

How does the idea change between Suikoden I and II?
| Game | Political conflict | Ensemble context | Personal-story framing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suikoden I | The Liberation Army’s fight against oppressive imperial rule. | The Stars gather across the conflict, carrying different beliefs and motivations. | Family and loyalty are part of the first game’s personal-story context. |
| Suikoden II | The Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston are at war. | Konami describes over 140 characters in total, including the Stars, Jowston members and Highland enemies. | The story’s personal context includes childhood friendship and family ties. |
These differences show why the 108 are a recurring series idea rather than one fixed roster carried unchanged from game to game. Konami describes the series as beginning in 1995 and its installments as using new locations, distinctive characters and interwoven stories set amid wartime conflict. Konami’s Suikoden series page
