Did Nintendo criticize Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Not in the sense of publicly condemning the games. In a December 1, 2022 announcement about the version 1.1.0 update, The Pokémon Company acknowledged performance complaints and apologized to players. Its statement read: “We are aware that players may encounter issues that affect the games’ performance. Our goal is always to give players a positive experience with our games, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We take the feedback from players seriously and are working on improvements to the games.” The Pokémon Company’s update announcement said version 1.1.0 would be released December 2, 2022.

That was an acknowledgment and apology, not a detailed technical postmortem. The statement did not quantify performance, identify causes, or promise that a particular update would eliminate every problem.

What did the updates address?
The version 1.1.0 announcement named a specific audio bug: music might not play correctly during battles with the Elite Four and Top Champion. It also noted other selected bug fixes. Later updates added features and addressed additional bugs, but update notes alone do not establish that every reported performance issue was resolved.

Nintendo’s support page records these and other updates for the Switch-exclusive games. Its version 4.0.0 note is specifically about play on Nintendo Switch 2; it should not be read as proof of a universal performance fix on every system or for every player. The official update record does not provide a controlled benchmark or current frame-rate measurement.
What did Nintendo say about the tournament problems?
A different issue came up at Nintendo’s 83rd Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in 2023. A shareholder asked about technical difficulties at an official Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet tournament hosted by The Pokémon Company that May. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa replied, “We are aware of the technical issues you pointed out.”

Furukawa said The Pokémon Company, a Nintendo affiliate, handles Pokémon brand management, including general Pokémon events, and said Nintendo hoped to continue working with it. His response concerned tournament operations; it was not a broader explanation of in-game performance problems. Nintendo’s shareholder-meeting Q&A contains the exchange.

What the public record does—and does not—establish
- Established: The Pokémon Company acknowledged that players could encounter performance problems, apologized, and said it was working on improvements.
- Established: Official update notes document specific bug fixes and a Switch 2-specific visual and frame-rate improvement in version 4.0.0.
- Not established by these statements: a measured performance result across hardware, a complete fix for all players, or a single cause for the reported problems.
- Separate matter: Nintendo acknowledged technical difficulties at a tournament and described The Pokémon Company’s role in Pokémon brand management and general events.
Nintendo also reported that Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet each sold more than 10 million units in their first three days. That is a sales figure, not a quality rating or evidence that performance complaints had been resolved. Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A gives the figure.
