Depending on the orientation, the back of the second device covers the first device’s display—or leaves it uncovered. The filing was made on 2022-11-11 and published on 2023-10-26; it describes a design, not an announced console.
How the detachable dual-screen design works
The patent record identifies Nintendo Co Ltd as the original assignee of WO2023203801A1, “Electronic apparatus.” It lists 2022-11-11 as both the filing date and priority date, and 2023-10-26 as the publication date.
In the abstract, the first device has a display and a connection unit. The second device has its own display and a connection unit that attaches to the first. It can be attached in one orientation or in the reverse orientation. In one state, the second device’s back covers the first display; in the other, it does not. The patent does not establish a particular retail use or explain that the arrangement is a successor to any existing console.
The text also describes wireless communication between the units both while connected and when separated, along with connection hardware and possible electrical contacts. These are features described in the patent, not confirmation that Nintendo built or sells a device with them.

Does this mean Nintendo has announced a new Switch?
No. The publication is a real Nintendo-assigned patent, but it is not a product announcement. Nintendo Life’s 2023 coverage of the filing cautioned that patents and applications do not guarantee an eventual product. The patent itself does not confirm a new Switch, a release date, or a launch plan.
Is the patent connected to Nintendo Switch 2?
The available sources do not establish a connection. Nintendo’s U.S. patent-marking page lists Switch 2 among products protected by U.S. patents and notes that additional patents may issue or be pending. That page documents patent marking for named products; it does not link WO2023203801A1 to Switch 2.

Nintendo’s current U.S. Switch 2 product page markets the system, bundles, and accessories, but does not identify this detachable dual-screen arrangement as part of the product. No reviewed source confirms compatibility with Switch 2 or its accessories, so the patent should not be treated as a way to add a second screen to a current console.
