Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ORBIT is described by its creator as a launcher and library interface for PlayStation 2—not as a replacement for the PS2 itself. The launch announcement lists several possible game sources and interface features, but it does not establish that ORBIT replaces the console’s hardware, storage devices, or other homebrew software, or that every listed option works on every setup.
What ORBIT is described as doing
In a launch announcement on Reddit’s r/ps2homebrew, the project creator presents ORBIT as a PS2 launcher. The announcement describes it as a way to browse and launch games and homebrew, with covers downloaded by the console, 3D save icons, an in-game menu, and RetroAchievements on real hardware. These are announcement-level feature claims, not independently verified compatibility or test results.
The announcement lists games from USB, an internal HDD, MX4SIO, iLink, MMCE, UDPBD, and the disc drive. It also lists PS1 games through POPStarter and homebrew apps. Treat these as source options the announcement names, not as a promise that each works with every console revision, adapter, storage setup, or software configuration. The linked guide is ORBIT’s guide; its detailed compatibility information is not established here.
What ORBIT does not establish that it replaces
The announcement describes software running on a PS2 and names existing media and storage paths from which content may be launched. It does not establish that ORBIT replaces the console, its optical drive, storage hardware, a homebrew entry point, or every other loader. That is a limit on what the announcement documents—not an exhaustive official list of things ORBIT cannot replace.

#1 Best Overall
- The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
- Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
- Color: Black
- PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power
In practical terms, ORBIT should be understood as a launcher/interface layer, not as a hardware substitute. Its source list also does not prove that a particular setup needs any one accessory: USB, an internal HDD, and the other named paths are presented as options, not a single required purchase.
How ORBIT differs from Open PS2 Loader
Open PS2 Loader (OPL) is a separate project. Its repository describes OPL as a game and app loader for Sony PlayStation 2 and documents its own storage configurations, image formats, homebrew ELF apps, and settings. That documentation helps explain the broader PS2 homebrew ecosystem, but OPL’s supported formats or storage behavior should not be attributed to ORBIT.

- DualShock Controller
- DVD playback
- Digital surround sound
- 2 memory card slots
Nothing in the ORBIT announcement establishes that ORBIT replaces OPL or that OPL must be installed alongside it. They are distinct software projects; whether one or both suit a particular setup depends on the user’s needs and verified compatibility details.

OrbitOPL Toolbox is also separate, despite the similar name. Its project page describes a cross-platform desktop app for organizing PS2 and PS1 OPL collections. It can import disc images and homebrew ELF files, fetch artwork, edit OPL settings, and manage virtual memory cards. It is a computer-side library manager for OPL collections—not the ORBIT launcher described in the PS2 announcement.
