Yes. LEGO models can include mechanisms that move by hand, motor-driven parts, working lights, and sensor-controlled responses. For a motorized build, the motor needs a compatible power and control component; adding a motor by itself will not make a model run. LEGO’s Powered Up components provide documented options for custom builds, but the right combination depends on what you want the model to do and which component generation you own.
What kinds of motion and electronics can a LEGO model have?
A model can do something as simple as turn a wheel or spin a fan, or combine movement with lights and programmed responses. A crane can lift a load, a carousel can rotate, and a train can move under motor power. A mechanism can also move through a hand-operated crank, lever, key or pedal without any electronics.

A mechanical movement is caused by a person operating the model; a motorized movement uses a motor and a compatible power source; and an electronic response can include lights or sensor-driven behavior. A custom model may combine them, but each added function needs suitable parts and enough room in the build.
LEGO describes Powered Up components for custom builds including vehicles, fan blades and other creations. Its Technic Large Motor 88013 is intended to drive mechanisms such as gearing or steering. Those examples show possible uses, not a guarantee that a motor will fit or function in every existing model.

What parts does a motorized LEGO build need?
A useful way to plan is to trace the power and control chain: moving mechanism → motor → compatible hub or battery box → batteries → supported control method. The mechanism must be able to move freely, and the electrical parts must match one another.
Motor and mechanism
The motor turns electrical power into motion. Gears, axles, wheels or other mechanical connections transfer that motion to the part you want to move. LEGO specifies Powered Up Technic Large Motor 88013 for uses such as gearing or steering, and specifies that it requires a Technic Hub sold separately. A motor does not replace the mechanical connection between itself and the moving part.

A hub can supply power and provide a way to control compatible components. Technic Hub 88012 has four input/output ports and Bluetooth app compatibility. Technic Hub 88009 has two input/output ports; LEGO specifically identifies it for Train Motor 88011. These details matter when deciding how many components the build needs and whether the intended motor is documented for that hub.
Technic Battery Box 88015 is another documented power option for compatible motors and lights. It uses six AA batteries, which are not included, and has physical direction switches. Do not assume that every motor or light works with every hub or battery box: confirm the compatibility specified for the parts you plan to use.

Batteries and controls
Technic Hub 88012 also specifies six AA batteries, not included. LEGO’s listing for Hub 88009 directs buyers to check its packaging for battery type and quantity rather than establishing that detail on the listing. Control choices depend on the particular parts: they can include the Powered Up app, a supported remote, or the physical switches on the Technic Battery Box.
How do I choose parts for a specific effect?

To drive a Technic mechanism
Technic Large Motor 88013 is intended for mechanisms such as gears or steering. LEGO specifies a separately sold compatible Technic Hub for it. Check the hub’s ports and the needs of the rest of the build before choosing a configuration; a multi-part creation may need more connections than a single motor does.
To add light
Powered Up Light 88005 contains two LED lights and a connecting wire intended for a Powered Up Hub. Plan where the lights and wire will sit in the model as well as how they will connect. Light 88005’s two LEDs are a product specification verified in 2026, not a claim about how brightly a finished custom build will appear.

To make a train move
Train Motor 88011 includes wheels and axles. LEGO specifically calls for Hub 88009 with this motor. Remote Control 88010 is documented for builds using either Move Hub 88006 or Hub 88009; that does not establish support for every Technic setup.
To combine movement, lights or sensor responses
LEGO says programming can control movement, sensors and lights. The actual capabilities depend on the selected components and the programming available for them, so choose the parts around the behavior you want rather than assuming every hub, motor, light and sensor combination will work together.
How do I plan and assemble a motorized custom build?
Before buying parts, decide what should move, how it will be powered and how you want to control it. A retrofit may be impractical if the model has no space for the motor, hub, batteries or moving connections; compatibility alone does not guarantee a clean physical fit.
- Define the action. Identify the exact part that should turn, lift, steer or light up, and whether a motor is necessary. A hand-operated mechanism may be sufficient if you do not need powered motion.
- Trace the mechanical path. Work out how motion will pass from a motor or hand control to the target part. Allow space for gears, axles or other connections, and make sure the mechanism is not blocked.
- Choose a documented electrical combination. Match the motor, hub or battery box, lights and control method using LEGO’s specifications for those components. For example, LEGO specifies a Technic Hub sold separately for Technic Large Motor 88013, and names Hub 88009 for Train Motor 88011.
- Check port needs and power. Count the components that need connections, compare that with the hub’s available ports, and verify the stated battery requirements for the selected product. Do not infer Hub 88009’s battery type or quantity from another hub’s specification.
- Check the app and device if using app control. LEGO support guidance specifies Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth version 4.1 or higher for the Powered Up app connection. Device compatibility can change, so check LEGO’s current device guidance before purchasing parts on the assumption that a particular phone or tablet will work.
- Assemble and check movement before adding complexity. Confirm that the mechanism can move freely and that the electrical connections match the chosen parts. Add lights or programmed behavior only after the basic movement and control arrangement is clear.
Will older Power Functions parts work with Powered Up?
No: LEGO says the two electrical generations are not directly compatible. Its UK-localized trains support article states, “Powered Up hubs are not compatible with Power Function motors and Power Function hubs/receivers are not compatible with Powered Up motors.”

Power Functions is a retired component system, according to LEGO support. If you already own older electrical parts, identify their generation before buying anything new. Do not plan to plug a Power Functions motor into a Powered Up hub, or a Powered Up motor into a Power Functions hub or receiver. A build should use a compatible set of components rather than relying on the parts’ similar purpose or appearance.
Can a LEGO model make sounds or play music?
A Powered Up model can be controlled through an app, but LEGO’s support guidance says sounds from the app come from the connected phone or tablet, not from a speaker built into the model. That distinction matters for an interactive build: app audio can accompany the model’s movement, but it should not be described as sound emitted by the LEGO creation itself.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check if a motorized model does not move?
Start with the simplest causes: power, connections and a blocked mechanism. LEGO’s Power Functions troubleshooting guidance includes checking the specified batteries and connections, then checking whether the motor or mechanism is blocked. Those checks are useful general troubleshooting prompts, but they do not establish that every Powered Up component has identical troubleshooting behavior.

- Check the power source. Verify that the selected component has the specified batteries and that they are installed as directed.
- Check compatibility and connections. Confirm that the motor, hub or battery box belong to a compatible system and that their connections are properly matched.
- Check for resistance. Look for a blocked motor or a mechanical connection that prevents the intended part from moving freely.
- Check the control path. If you are using an app or remote, confirm that the chosen control is documented for the hub or build configuration in question.
- Check app-device support. For app control, verify the device against LEGO’s current compatibility guidance rather than assuming that Bluetooth alone guarantees support.
What are the main limitations to plan around?
Three constraints determine whether an idea is practical: compatibility, space and control. Compatibility is specific to the electrical generation and selected parts. Space is specific to the physical model; LEGO’s component descriptions do not establish that a particular existing set can be retrofitted. Control depends on the parts and supported app or remote, rather than on a universal system that works with every configuration.
Product stock, app support and program availability can change. LEGO’s product and support pages consulted for this article were examined on October 30, 2026; check current listings and device guidance before buying. Those pages establish component purposes and documented compatibility, not availability from any particular retailer or the performance of a particular custom build.

Can every LEGO set be converted into a motorized model?
Not necessarily. The component information establishes what specific motors and hubs are intended to do, but it does not establish that a given set has the room or mechanical layout for a retrofit.
Do I need to write code to use a LEGO motor?
Not for every kind of control: LEGO documents physical direction switches on Technic Battery Box 88015 and a remote for certain specified hub configurations. Programming is relevant when you want behaviors such as controlling movement, lights or sensors through the app.
Can I use a tablet instead of a phone with Powered Up?
LEGO’s support guidance describes the app connection in terms of Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth 4.1 or higher, but that alone does not confirm compatibility for every device. Check LEGO’s current device guidance for the specific tablet before relying on it.
Are the listed components guaranteed to be available now?
No availability guarantee follows from a component specification or support page. Stock can change, so verify the current LEGO listing or retailer information before purchasing.
