PS5 3D Audio is the console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech processing system. In a game that supports it, the PS5 can place sounds around you so an arrow may seem to pass by your head or footsteps may appear to come from another room. A compatible stereo headset sends the processed left- and right-channel signals to your ears; the PlayStation PULSE 3D wireless headset is tuned for this job but is not required.
The result depends on the game’s implementation, your connected device and the PS5 audio settings. You can use PULSE 3D wirelessly with its included USB adapter, or use another compatible USB headset or an analog headset connected to the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack.

What does PS5 3D Audio actually do?
PS5 3D Audio is an audio-processing feature built into the console, not a proprietary signal format that only one headset can decode. Sony calls the processing engine Tempest 3D AudioTech, describing it as the PS5’s custom engine for 3D Audio. In supported games, it processes sound cues to create a more spatial presentation: a sound can appear to originate above, below, beside or behind your character rather than simply coming from a left or right speaker.
The practical benefit is positional context. An arrow can seem to pass across your head, and footsteps can appear to come from a room on the other side of a wall. Those examples describe the intended effect, not a guarantee that every title renders every sound in the same way. Developers choose how much of the system to use, so the character of 3D Audio changes from game to game.

How does Tempest 3D AudioTech create a sense of direction?
The PS5 performs the spatial processing, then sends separate audio information to the two sides of a compatible stereo headset. Your brain compares tiny differences in timing, volume and tone between the ears and uses them to judge where a sound seems to be. A headset does not need multiple physical speakers around your head for this particular effect; it needs to reproduce the two processed channels cleanly and keep the left and right signals distinct.
Why separate left and right channels matter
Sony says a compatible stereo headset offers the best 3D Audio experience because it can deliver audio to each ear separately. That separation lets the console preserve the directional cues it calculated. A headset with poor channel separation, an incorrectly connected plug or a configuration that mixes channels can make the effect less distinct.
Why the game matters as much as the console
Tempest provides capabilities that developers can apply in different ways. One game may use detailed elevation and occlusion cues, while another may apply 3D processing only to selected effects. The PULSE 3D manual therefore qualifies its support: 3D Audio works on PS5 when the game itself supports 3D Audio. A title that does not implement the feature will still produce sound through the headset, but it should not be expected to produce the same spatial cues.
Is the PULSE 3D headset required for PS5 3D Audio?
No. PULSE 3D is an output device specifically tuned for the audio the PS5 can produce; it does not create Tempest 3D AudioTech inside the headset. Sony also identifies compatible USB headsets and analog headsets plugged into the DualSense controller as ways to use PS5 3D Audio.
PULSE 3D can be a straightforward match because it was designed around PS5 use and includes the wireless adapter needed for its console connection. If you already own a compatible stereo headset, buying PULSE 3D is not necessary just to unlock 3D Audio. Compatibility, comfort and the way a particular headset reproduces stereo cues will determine whether changing devices is worthwhile.
How do I connect PULSE 3D to a PS5?
The normal wireless connection uses the USB wireless adapter supplied with PULSE 3D. You do not need a special application or a PULSE-only switch to activate Tempest; the PS5 handles the 3D processing when the game and output configuration support it.

- Insert the PULSE 3D wireless adapter into a USB port on the PS5.
- Turn on the headset and wait for the console to recognize the wireless connection.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the recognized headset as the output device and review the options shown for that connection.
- Start a game that supports 3D Audio and adjust volume, game/chat balance and microphone controls on the headset as needed.
Sony’s support instructions note that the options shown in Audio Output vary with the connected device and the rest of your setup. If a setting is missing, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; it may simply be unavailable for that connection.
Can I use PULSE 3D with a cable?
Yes. PULSE 3D has a 3.5 mm audio jack, providing a wired option for compatible audio sources. When it is connected to the DualSense controller, the controller becomes the audio path to the headset. The available controls and settings can differ from the wireless arrangement, so check Audio Output after changing connection methods.
What PS5 settings should I check?
Selecting the output device
Use Settings > Sound > Audio Output to select the headset and inspect the available output controls. The exact labels and choices can change with the connected device and configuration. Confirm that sound is being sent to the headset rather than the television or another output before judging the 3D effect.
Using EQ presets and headset controls
Sony provides EQ customization for PULSE headsets through the PS5 sound controls. EQ changes the tonal balance—such as the relative prominence of bass or treble—but does not turn 3D Audio on or off. Choose a preset that keeps dialogue and environmental details clear, then make small changes while listening in the game you actually play.
PULSE 3D also includes physical controls for common headset functions. The exact controls available to you depend on the connection and firmware, so use the controls on the headset and the options displayed by the PS5 rather than assuming that every setting documented for a newer PULSE model applies to the older PULSE 3D.
Which games support PS5 3D Audio?
Support is determined by the game, not simply by the presence of a PS5 or PULSE headset. Check the game’s own audio options, technical documentation or publisher information for a 3D Audio setting or PS5-specific support. Some games may use the system for a broad sound field, while others may implement more precise height, distance or obstruction cues.

Even in a supported title, the effect can vary between scenes. A quiet interior with clearly separated footsteps may make positioning easier to hear than a scene filled with music, explosions and voice chat. Treat 3D Audio as a way to present the game’s sound design, not as a promise that every sound will be equally easy to locate.
What are the PULSE 3D headset’s relevant specifications?
Sony’s product information lists up to 12 hours of wireless play for PULSE 3D. That is a manufacturer estimate rather than an independent battery test. The instruction manual specifies up to 12 hours at mid volume and notes that actual use varies with factors such as charge level and ambient temperature.

The manual lists the headset at approximately 292 g. Weight and fit are personal considerations: a specification cannot predict how the clamping force, ear-cup shape or headband will feel during a long session.
| Feature | PULSE 3D information | What it means for 3D Audio |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 connection | Wireless through the included USB adapter | Provides a direct console connection without a headset cable to the controller. |
| Wired connection | 3.5 mm audio jack | Allows an analog connection, including through the DualSense controller. |
| Wireless battery estimate | Up to 12 hours; Sony’s manual gives the mid-volume condition | Actual time changes with use conditions, charge and temperature. |
| Weight | Approximately 292 g, according to the instruction manual | A published weight for comparison; comfort still depends on fit. |
How does PULSE 3D compare with other ways to hear PS5 3D Audio?
The important comparison is connection and fit, not whether one brand has exclusive access to Tempest. Any headset must be compatible with the PS5 and preserve separate left and right channels. Confirm compatibility before buying a third-party model, because USB behavior, microphone support and available controls can differ.
| Option | Connection to PS5 | Best fit for | Points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PULSE 3D | Included USB wireless adapter or 3.5 mm cable | Players wanting a PS5-focused wireless headset with a wired fallback | Game support, comfort, battery condition and the settings exposed by the chosen connection |
| Compatible USB headset | USB connection; compatibility varies by model | Players who already own a supported USB headset | Whether the PS5 recognizes its audio and microphone functions |
| Analog stereo headset | 3.5 mm jack on the DualSense controller | Players who prefer a simple wired setup or already have a suitable headset | Plug fit, cable length, controller battery impact and microphone support |
| Other PULSE models | Model-specific wireless or wired arrangements | Users choosing between over-ear and earbud form factors | Model-specific controls, EQ support, comfort and compatibility |
Sony’s current PULSE lineup also includes PULSE Elite wireless headset and PULSE Explore wireless earbuds. Sony describes those products as supporting 3D Audio in supported games; they are separate products, not renamed versions of PULSE 3D. The company describes planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link technology for the newer models. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof that they deliver more accurate spatial positioning than PULSE 3D.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if 3D Audio does not seem to work?
No sound in the headset
- Reinsert the wireless adapter or confirm that the analog plug is fully seated in the DualSense.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the intended output device.
- Check the headset’s volume and mute controls, then test another application or game.
The sound is stereo but not obviously positional
- Verify that the game supports PS5 3D Audio; the headset cannot add support that the title does not provide.
- Listen for a controlled example, such as footsteps or a passing projectile, rather than judging during a loud action scene.
- Try a compatible stereo connection that keeps left and right channels separate, and avoid adapters that combine channels.
A setting shown in a guide is missing
PS5 audio choices depend on the connected device and configuration. A menu option documented for a different PULSE model, a wireless connection or a particular firmware version may not appear in your setup. Use the controls and EQ choices that the console exposes for the device currently connected.

Does PS5 3D Audio guarantee a competitive advantage?
No guarantee is established. Spatial cues can make some sounds easier to place, but the game’s implementation, your hearing, the mix, background noise and your headset’s fit all influence what you perceive. Sony’s descriptions explain the intended positioning effect; they do not promise a measured improvement in accuracy, reaction time or competitive results.
What is the simplest way to decide whether PULSE 3D is right for me?
Choose PULSE 3D if you want a PS5-oriented wireless headset, value the included adapter and prefer the option of a 3.5 mm cable. Keep an existing compatible stereo headset if it already works with the PS5 and feels comfortable; 3D Audio is a console-and-game feature, not a PULSE-only capability. Whichever device you use, confirm game support and select it under Audio Output before evaluating the effect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PS5 3D Audio work through TV speakers?
Sony’s strongest recommendation is a compatible stereo headset because it can send separate signals to each ear. The exact 3D presentation available through speakers depends on the PS5 output device and configuration, so do not assume that a television will reproduce the same positioning effect as headphones.
Do I need to install a PULSE 3D app or enable Tempest separately?
No separate PULSE application is required to make the PS5 process supported game audio. Connect the headset, select it under Settings > Sound > Audio Output, and let the game provide its supported 3D Audio implementation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will a 3D Audio headset work with PS4 games on PS5?
The headset can output audio from a backward-compatible game, but the presence of PULSE 3D does not prove that the older title uses PS5 3D Audio. Check the individual game’s PS5 support and audio options for the behavior you should expect.
Can I use PULSE 3D while charging it?
The supplied documentation establishes wireless-play estimates and a wired 3.5 mm option, but it does not state a universal play-while-charging procedure for every setup. If the battery is low, use the documented cable connection or follow the headset manual’s charging instructions for your model.
