What PS5 Games Are Likely to Work on PS6? Backward Compatibility Explained

Short answer: Sony has not announced the PS6, its hardware, or a PS5 compatibility list. If Sony carries the PS5 software environment into its next console, many mainstream PS5 games—particularly digitally owned and first-party releases—are plausible candidates, but no individual game is confirmed until Sony publishes a policy or the console launches.

What Sony has actually confirmed

There is no official PS6 specification, launch date, compatibility percentage, disc-drive announcement, or account-entitlement policy in the information Sony has published through 2026. That makes any list of “confirmed PS6 games” misleading. The sensible answer is a probability assessment based on Sony’s previous generation transition.

The strongest precedent is PS4 software on PS5

In a 2020 PlayStation Blog FAQ, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, said: “When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5.” That was a launch-era statement about PS4 games, not a promise about PS6.

Sony’s current PS5 product information says more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 consoles. The company also warns that some functions may be missing and that certain games can show errors or unexpected behavior. Selected PS4 titles receive Game Boost, while PS4-only games are identified in the PlayStation Store. This shows both the scale of Sony’s previous compatibility effort and its limits: “playable” does not necessarily mean identical features, saves, performance, or peripherals.

Compatibility was evaluated title by title

Sony’s 2020 hardware explanation said engineers assessed games individually, expected boosted frequencies to produce higher or more stable frame rates in some cases, and had tested hundreds of titles while preparing to test thousands more. The process was therefore not a blanket switch that automatically made every older game behave the same way.

Nishino also gave a warning that matters for a future PS6: “Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.” A PS5 game running on PS6, a save transferring correctly, a native PS6 upgrade, and every accessory continuing to work are separate outcomes.

Which PS5 games are the best candidates?

The categories below are forecasts, not Sony guarantees. A game can look like a strong candidate and still be excluded by licensing, technical dependencies, or a publisher’s decision.

PS5 software category Why it looks plausible What could prevent or limit support
Mainstream digital PS5 releases A software environment that already supports the previous generation could make widely played digital titles practical to carry forward. Digital entitlements, patches, account authentication, delisting, or a publisher’s licensing terms could change on PS6.
First-party PS5 games closely tied to Sony platform services Sony controls the platform relationship and has a strong incentive to preserve access to major catalog software. No first-party title has been confirmed for PS6, and service, save, or upgrade rules could still differ by game.
Standard PS5 Blu-ray releases They could work if PS6 includes a compatible optical drive and Sony enables PS5 software from disc. PS6 drive hardware, regional licensing, disc authentication, and the final software policy are unknown.
Games needing unusual accessories Basic controller input may be easier to reproduce than specialized hardware behavior. Cameras, virtual-reality equipment, special controllers, instruments, or other peripherals may not be supported.
Delisted games or games dependent on discontinued online services Local single-player code might remain usable in some cases. Servers, launchers, authentication, storefront availability, or required updates may no longer exist.
PS4, PS3, PS2, and PS1 software Sony’s PS5 precedent demonstrates strongest support for the immediately preceding generation. There is no basis to assume that PS6 will automatically extend compatibility to every older PlayStation generation.

Digital PS5 games on PS6

Digital ownership is the easier category for Sony to carry forward from a hardware-distribution perspective because there is no physical disc to read. If PS6 uses the same PlayStation account and entitlement system, a purchased game could be available for redownload or streaming according to Sony’s future rules.

That “if” is important. Sony has not announced that PS5 digital licenses will transfer to PS6, whether every purchase will be recognized automatically, or whether some games will require a new purchase. A digital license is an account entitlement governed by Sony and the publisher; it is not a universal guarantee that every future console will support the software.

What to check in your account today

  • Confirm that the game appears in your account library rather than relying only on a local installation.
  • Keep access to the account that purchased the game and protect its sign-in and two-factor-authentication methods.
  • Record whether you own a PS5 version, a cross-generation bundle, or a separate PS4 entitlement, because publishers can define those packages differently.
  • Note whether the game depends on an online service, a publisher launcher, or a required download.

These steps preserve your current access; they do not create a PS6 entitlement where Sony has not announced one.

Can PS5 discs be played on PS6?

A PS5 disc is a reasonable way to preserve a physical library for PS5 today, but it should not be described as a guaranteed PS6-compatible purchase. A future console would need a compatible optical drive, support for the disc’s format and region, and software authorization for the PS5 build.

Sony’s current PS5 information says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on PS5. Separately, Sony announced that production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will stop in January 2028. Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said: “This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”

That policy concerns disc production and continued PS5 use. It neither confirms nor rules out a PS6 disc drive. A pre-2028 PS5 disc could remain useful on PS5 even if PS6 is digital-only, while a PS6 with a drive could still require a title-specific compatibility decision.

What “backward compatible” may mean in practice

Readers often use one phrase for several different promises. When Sony eventually describes PS6 support, look for each of these separately.

Question What a positive answer would mean Why it may vary
Will the game boot? The PS5 version starts and can be played on PS6. System software, licensing, patches, or technical exceptions may block individual titles.
Will my saves transfer? Existing progress can be loaded on PS6. Save migration is a developer decision and can differ between versions.
Will I receive a native PS6 version? The publisher supplies a build that uses PS6 features. Running an older version does not imply a free upgrade or a new release.
Will performance improve? Higher or steadier frame rates, faster loading, or another benefit is enabled. A boost may be system-wide, title-specific, patch-dependent, or absent.
Will every feature work? Multiplayer, cameras, virtual reality, special controllers, and other functions remain available. Accessories, operating-system hooks, servers, and discontinued services can create exceptions.
Will the disc or download remain valid? Your existing ownership is recognized. Disc hardware, regional rules, account entitlements, and publisher licensing all matter.

Why first-party and mainstream games are more plausible

Large, widely distributed releases are generally easier candidates for a platform holder to prioritize because they have established codebases, substantial player populations, and clear commercial value. First-party software is especially plausible as a category because Sony controls both the platform and the publisher relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Plausible” does not mean automatic. A first-party game can still rely on an online service, a discontinued peripheral, a separate remaster, or a version-specific save system. Conversely, a smaller third-party game could work perfectly if it uses standard PS5 features and its publisher maintains the necessary entitlement and patch support. The category predicts attention, not certainty.

How to judge a particular PS5 game

  1. Identify the ownership type. Write down whether you own a digital license, a PS5 Blu-ray disc, a cross-generation bundle, or a remastered edition. These are different products.
  2. Check the game’s dependencies. Look for mandatory servers, account linking, publisher launchers, required downloads, or online-only operation.
  3. List the hardware it uses. Standard DualSense controls are a simpler case than a camera, virtual-reality headset, motion controller, instrument, or other specialized accessory.
  4. Separate the version questions. Ask independently whether the PS5 build might run, whether saves might transfer, and whether a PS6-native upgrade might be offered.
  5. Watch the publisher’s policy. Save migration, upgrade pricing, patches, and delisting decisions are often made by the publisher rather than by the console hardware team.
  6. Wait for Sony’s final matrix. The only definitive answer will be a published compatibility list, system requirement, or launch behavior on PS6.

Will you need to rebuy PS5 games?

There is no announced rule requiring or waiving a repurchase. Several outcomes are possible: a game could run from an existing digital license; a disc could work only on a PS6 model with a drive; a publisher could offer a paid or free upgrade; or a title could be excluded and remain playable only on PS5.

Do not buy a second copy solely on the assumption that it will secure PS6 access. Until Sony publishes entitlement rules, the purchase decision should be based on whether you want the game for PS5 now. Keep receipts and account records for products whose upgrade or cross-generation terms are explicitly stated, but treat future PS6 access as unconfirmed.

What could cause an otherwise compatible game to fail?

  • Peripheral dependence: the PS6 may not support the camera, headset, controller, or instrument required by a specific feature.
  • Online-service shutdown: a game may launch but lose multiplayer, cloud functions, or authentication if its servers are retired.
  • Delisting: a removed storefront listing can complicate redownloads, patches, or ownership verification.
  • Regional and disc rules: a physical copy may depend on drive hardware, region, and licensing behavior.
  • Save incompatibility: a game can run while leaving progress behind on PS5.
  • Missing patches: an unpatched PS5 build may work without receiving PS6-specific performance or feature improvements.
  • Publisher decisions: a remaster, new edition, launcher change, or license expiration can alter access independently of the console’s raw capability.

What to watch for in a real PS6 announcement

A useful Sony announcement would need to answer more than “PS5 games are supported.” Look for the exact console models covered, whether a disc drive is included or optional, how physical discs are authenticated, which digital purchases transfer, and whether support applies to all PS5 software or a tested list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check the treatment of save files, trophies, cloud saves, patches, performance boosts, virtual-reality hardware, cameras, special controllers, delisted products, and games that require online services. Sony’s PS5-to-PS4 precedent shows why these details cannot be inferred from a single compatibility headline.

Until those details exist, the most defensible forecast is that mainstream PS5 digital software and Sony’s own major releases are more likely to receive attention than unusual, delisted, peripheral-dependent, or service-dependent games. Standard PS5 discs are plausible only if the PS6 has a compatible drive and Sony enables them. None of those categories is confirmed today.
