The reward-bearing Fallen Dragon victory happens in the Reunion main quest, not during the earlier Rumbles in the North encounter. In Reunion, you receive the full boss payout, a Norgan Portcrystal, and level 4 unidentified equipment that must be appraised in the Norgandian settlement. Rumbles in the North is a scripted retreat, so the dragon cannot be killed and does not drop boss loot there.
Where the actual Fallen Dragon reward is awarded
Dragon’s Dogma 2 presents two separate encounters with the Fallen Dragon. They look related, but they do not have the same gameplay outcome or rewards.

The distinction matters because the objective text in Rumbles in the North says “Repel the dragon.” That wording describes a survival or progression objective, not a kill condition. The later quest instead tells you to “Defeat the Fallen Dragon and save Rovall.” Only the latter objective leads to the boss reward screen and completion state associated with the kill.

Once the Fallen Dragon is defeated in Reunion, the reward package is fixed as follows. The values below are the amounts reported for the completed fight; they are not estimates or ranges.

That makes the headline payout 450,000 XP, 100,000 G, and 10,000 RC, plus the Norgan Portcrystal and the level 4 equipment. Treat the two Rift Crystal figures separately: 10,000 RC belongs to the actual Fallen Dragon kill, while 2,000 RC is part of the earlier quest completion and is not a dragon-drop reward.
How to confirm that the dragon is truly defeated
The fight does not finish merely because the final visible health segment appears to be empty. During the last phase, a pawn calls, “The heart is exposed!” That call marks the transition to the finishing sequence.
- Continue damaging the dragon through the final health segment.
- When the pawn announces “The heart is exposed!”, drop from the dragon rather than continuing to attack from its back.
- Run to the exposed chest and interact with the exposed heart area. Reaching the chest triggers the finishing scene.
- Allow the scene to complete, then check the quest log. The successful state records “You defeated the Fallen Dragon” and “Completed: Reunion.”
If the scene has not triggered and the quest log does not show those completion lines, you have not yet reached the reward-awarding state. In particular, ending the earlier encounter after the dragon restores its health is not equivalent to completing this sequence.
How the level 4 equipment works
The equipment spoils are identified as level 4 gear, but they arrive unidentified. The item names shown before appraisal therefore do not tell you the final equipment details. Take the gear to the Norgandian settlement and have it appraised there to reveal what the Fallen Dragon awarded.

Appraisal procedure
- Finish the Reunion boss sequence and confirm that the quest log says “Completed: Reunion.”
- Open your inventory and locate the newly acquired level 4 unidentified equipment.
- Travel to the Norgandian settlement named for the appraisal location.
- Use the settlement’s appraisal service on the unidentified pieces.
- Check the revealed item names and properties after appraisal. The reported examples include Ancient Light Weaponry and Ancient Bowstaff, but those examples should not be treated as a guarantee that every player receives the same equipment combination.
The available information establishes the settlement and the need for appraisal, but it does not specify a particular NPC name or a universal menu label. If you arrive with unidentified gear and cannot find the service immediately, look for the settlement interaction that explicitly offers appraisal rather than assuming that the equipment is defective or missing.
What the Norgan Portcrystal reward means
The fixed item in the Reunion payout is one Norgan Portcrystal. It is listed separately from the random or unidentified equipment, so it should not be confused with the level 4 spoils. It is also separate from Rift Crystals: the portcrystal is an item, while RC is a currency reward recorded as 10,000 for the boss fight.
The reward record identifies the item as a Norgan Portcrystal but does not establish additional conditions, quantities beyond one, or a separate bonus attached to it. Check your item inventory after the quest sequence if you want to verify that the fixed item was added alongside the currency and equipment rewards.
Combat details that help you reach the payout
The Reunion guide reports approximately 500,000 health spread across ten segments. Because the fight is divided into segments, the dragon can appear to be making slow progress even when you are consistently damaging it. Focus your attacks on the body areas described as unscaled weak points.

Target the unscaled areas
The reported weak points are the flesh on the hind legs and the back between the wings. Concentrating damage there is more useful than treating every armored or scaled section as an equal target. VGC’s coverage likewise recommends focusing on unscaled body parts during the final boss fight.
Survive the blue-light attack
When the dragon gathers blue light, move behind the large rock identified in the encounter guidance and stay there until the blast passes. This is a positioning check rather than a damage opportunity: remaining exposed can interrupt your attempt to work through the health segments and may force you to spend time recovering instead of attacking.
Expect a special final-phase interaction
The final health bar is removed by Eir’s special attack, according to VGC’s description of the encounter. After that transition, watch for the pawn’s “The heart is exposed!” call and perform the drop-and-run sequence to the chest. The finishing scene, not simply damage dealt to the visible bar, is what advances the quest to the completed state.

The confusion comes from treating both encounters as one continuous boss battle. In Rumbles in the North, the dragon restores its health and the game interrupts the fight with a scene. That interruption is intentional. There is no hidden phase that eventually converts the encounter into a kill, and waiting for additional drops at that location will not produce boss loot.

The quest still pays 100,000 XP and 2,000 RC when Rumbles in the North is completed, which can make the encounter appear to have rewarded a defeated boss. Those amounts are quest rewards for repelling the dragon and advancing the story. They are not the 450,000 XP, 100,000 G, and 10,000 RC package attached to the later kill.

Use this checklist if you want to confirm that you received the complete payout rather than the earlier progression reward:
- The quest name is Reunion, not Rumbles in the North.
- The objective is to “Defeat the Fallen Dragon and save Rovall,” rather than simply “Repel the dragon.”
- The pawn says “The heart is exposed!” during the final phase.
- You leave the dragon, reach its chest, and trigger the finishing scene.
- The quest log displays “You defeated the Fallen Dragon” and “Completed: Reunion.”
- Your rewards include 450,000 XP, 100,000 G, 10,000 RC, one Norgan Portcrystal, and level 4 unidentified gear.
- You take the unidentified equipment to the Norgandian settlement for appraisal.
Common mistakes and what they indicate
“I received XP, but no dragon drops.”
You most likely completed Rumbles in the North. Its 100,000 XP and 2,000 RC are quest rewards, and the scripted encounter provides no dragon drops.

The gear is unidentified by design. Appraisal in the Norgandian settlement is required before its equipment details are revealed.

“The health bar ended, but the quest is not complete.”
Look for the “The heart is exposed!” call, then drop to the chest and trigger the finishing scene. The kill is not recorded until that interaction and scene have occurred.
“I am counting the two RC amounts together as one boss reward.”
Keep the encounters separate. The earlier quest awards 2,000 RC for its scripted progression; the completed Reunion fight awards 10,000 RC as part of the Fallen Dragon payout.
The practical answer
To get the Fallen Dragon’s full rewards, finish the later Reunion fight and complete its heart-exposure finisher. The earlier Rumbles in the North battle is deliberately unwinnable and has no dragon loot. After the successful kill, verify the quest completion text, collect the fixed currencies and Norgan Portcrystal, then appraise the level 4 unidentified equipment in the Norgandian settlement.
