In Microsoft’s published Bedrock vanilla behavior data, a creeper looks for one of these in-game mobs within 6 blocks and runs away from it. A cat or ocelot is a useful deterrent, but it is not a guarantee that a creeper will never attack or explode.
What the Bedrock behavior definition specifies
Microsoft Learn publishes the vanilla creeper behavior definition from the Bedrock behavior pack (Bedrock stable view, last updated 2026-03-24). The values that answer the question are below.
| Setting | Value in the Bedrock definition | What it means in play |
|---|---|---|
| Avoid targets | ocelot and cat | Creepers treat these two mobs as reasons to flee. |
Search distance (max_dist) |
6 blocks | The avoidance behavior looks for a qualifying mob within this range. |
| Sprint speed multiplier | 1.2 | The creeper’s sprint speed is multiplied by this value while it runs from the avoided mob. |
| Nearest-player targeting | Priority 1 | The creeper’s primary target-seeking behavior is listed ahead of the others. |
| Explosion trigger | 2.5 blocks, priority 2 | The fuse-and-explode logic sits between targeting and avoidance in the priority list. |
| Avoidance | Priority 3 | Fleeing from cats and ocelots is listed after targeting and the explosion trigger. |
Microsoft’s documentation for the minecraft:behavior.avoid_mob_type behavior explains that it makes an entity run away from other entities that match its filters. The creeper’s filter names cats and ocelots, so those are the mobs that trigger the flee response.
How the avoidance works in practice
Read the table as a set of rules operating together rather than a single switch:

- This cozy cat Purring Sounds neck pillow is an adorable Minecraft plush that purrs when its paw is pressed!
- The toy cat wraps around the neck for comfort and companionship!
- Soft short-pile fabric and adorable facial designs show Minecraft's signature pixelation.
- A curved design helps the kitty stay put.
- The delightful travel companion, hang-around buddy and sleep pal makes a great gift for kids of all ages, starting at age 3.
- The cat or ocelot must be within 6 blocks. Beyond that distance, the avoidance behavior does not see it as a reason to run.
- The creeper runs rather than stopping to fight. The configured sprint multiplier of 1.2 applies while it flees.
- Targeting still exists. Nearest-player targeting is listed at a higher priority than avoidance, so the creeper’s general pursuit logic is not switched off by a nearby cat.
Why a cat is a deterrent, not a shield
Creepers remain hostile, explosive mobs. Minecraft’s official mobs article on Minecraft.net (published 2023-09-22) describes them as sneaking up on players and exploding, and nothing in the Bedrock definition changes that role.
The explosion trigger in the definition is set at 2.5 blocks. Its listed stop conditions include the creeper moving outside the 6-block range or losing vision of its target. Those details mean a cat can change a creeper’s movement, but the published data does not promise that a cat prevents an explosion that has already been set in motion. Treat a cat or ocelot as a way to push creepers away from your base or your path, not as armour.

Cats and ocelots are ordinary in-game mobs. Real-world cats have no effect on Minecraft creepers, and a cat does not attack creepers.
Edition and version limits
The numbers above come from Microsoft’s Bedrock vanilla behavior data. They describe what that published Bedrock definition specifies. They do not establish that Java Edition uses the same 6-block range, 1.2 multiplier, or priority order, and this article does not assert Java values. If you need Java-specific numbers, check an edition-specific primary source for your version before quoting them.

Behavior can also change under other conditions. Mods, add-ons, custom behavior packs, and version-specific bugs can alter how creepers respond to cats and ocelots, so a result you see in a modded or custom world may not match the vanilla definition.

Both mobs appear in the same avoid-target list, and the published definition does not assign one a stronger effect than the other. Any practical difference you notice comes from which mob you can get and keep near your build, not from a documented difference in creeper response.

Where the Minecraft D&D reference fits
A Minecraft-branded Dungeons & Dragons Monstrous Compendium also describes creepers as afraid of cats. That book adapts Minecraft for tabletop D&D rules, so it is useful as flavor text but should not be cited as evidence for how the video game’s code works.
In short: in Bedrock vanilla, cats and ocelots make creepers flee within 6 blocks, while the creeper’s explosion logic and targeting remain active.
