The safest configuration for an AI coding assistant in a game project is layered least privilege: open unknown repositories in restricted workspace mode, confine the agent to the project and approved reference folders, deny unnecessary network access, keep secrets outside its readable paths, require approval for terminal, MCP, release and account actions, and review every diff before it is committed or merged. Sandboxing lowers the blast radius of a malicious prompt or plugin, but it is not a replacement for endpoint security or human review.
Use a least-privilege baseline
Game projects combine source code with assets, editor plugins, build tools, platform credentials and often large third-party dependency trees. An agent that can freely read and write all of those locations can leak a signing key, alter a release script, add a malicious package or damage an entire checkout after one poisoned instruction. Configure permissions in layers rather than choosing a single “safe” switch.

- Workspace: start in restricted or untrusted mode for repositories, samples, mods and plugins you did not create or review.
- Filesystem: grant write access only to the active game workspace; make reference folders read-only and deny secrets explicitly.
- Network: block outbound traffic by default where practical, then allow only registries, source hosts, documentation domains and build services the task needs.
- Credentials: keep
.envfiles, signing keys, platform tokens, CI secrets and release certificates outside the agent’s readable paths. - Approvals: require a human decision for shell commands, dependency installation, release scripts, account actions, network-enabled tools and files outside the project.
- Recovery: work in a branch or separate worktree, commit frequently, inspect the diff and run game-specific tests before integration.
Open unfamiliar projects in restricted workspace mode
Workspace trust is the first gate because a repository can contain instructions that influence an agent before you have inspected them. Treat downloaded Unity or Unreal samples, mod kits, editor extensions, copied scripts and inherited studio repositories as untrusted.

VS Code
Open the folder in Restricted Mode until you have reviewed its tasks, launch configurations, extensions and agent instructions. VS Code’s guidance says Restricted Mode disables agents in an untrusted workspace. Trust the folder only after checking scripts and dependencies, and trust individual extension publishers rather than accepting every recommendation.

Cursor
Enable workspace trust and use its restricted behavior for unknown repositories. Cursor notes that restricted mode breaks AI features; that limitation is useful while you inspect a project with a basic editor. Do not switch to full agent functionality merely to preview an unfamiliar asset pack or plugin.
Review checklist before trusting a repository
- Search task files, build scripts and editor hooks for commands that download or execute code.
- Inspect package manifests, lockfiles and post-install scripts for unexpected registries or binaries.
- Check extension and plugin publishers, requested permissions and update sources.
- Open agent instructions as text and look for requests to reveal secrets, disable safeguards or run release commands.
- Make a clean commit or disposable clone before enabling write-capable tools.
Draw a hard filesystem boundary around the agent
Configure the assistant to read and write the game workspace only. Add approved reference folders, such as a read-only design-notes directory, one at a time. A useful rule is “write where the task is, read only what the task needs.”
Files that should require an explicit approval
.env, credential stores and local configuration containing tokens.- Apple, Android, console or storefront signing keys and certificate bundles.
- Continuous-integration files, deployment manifests and release automation.
- Build output, distribution folders and installer or patch-generation scripts.
- SSH keys, cloud-provider configuration and password-manager exports.
GitHub Copilot documents filesystem and credential restrictions. VS Code supports workspace-limited access, extra read-only folders and sensitive-file glob patterns. Cursor provides .cursorignore to block selected files from indexing and agent access. Use deny rules as a backstop, then keep secrets physically outside the workspace when possible; a deny pattern is not protection against a compromised operating system or a tool that has already been granted broader access.
Practical Unity and Unreal layout
Keep source, tests and non-secret project settings in the active workspace. Store signing material, store passwords and production service credentials in a separate operating-system account, hardware-backed key store or CI secret manager. If the agent needs a sample asset, copy only that asset into a quarantine folder and grant read-only access rather than exposing your entire home directory.

Control network egress separately from file access
Filesystem restrictions do not stop an agent from sending code or metadata over the network. Disable outbound network access by default for refactoring, documentation and local test tasks. When a build needs downloads, allow only the package registries, source hosts, documentation domains or build services required for that session.
Use task-specific allowlists
- Offline code change: no network access.
- Dependency update: the exact package registry and source host, with lockfile changes reviewed.
- Cloud build: the approved build endpoint only; keep release credentials unavailable.
- Documentation lookup: approved documentation domains, without access to project secrets.
VS Code documents network access as a separately configurable control and says it is enabled by default in the cited setting. Cursor says its default tools cannot make arbitrary network requests and limits them to GitHub, direct-link retrieval and web-search providers. Confirm the actual policy in your installed version; an allowlist that is safe for one editor may not apply to an extension or MCP server.
Choose approval modes that match the risk
Automatic execution is convenient for repetitive local tests but dangerous for dependency installation, shell pipelines and release operations. Prefer manual or plan-style permission for any action that can change the environment, contact an external service or affect a deliverable.
Recommended approval matrix
| Action | Recommended setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Read and edit ordinary source files | Assisted or accept-edits mode inside the workspace | Changes remain bounded and easy to inspect. |
| Run unit tests or a local editor check | Narrow allowlist for named commands | Useful when arguments and working directory are fixed. |
| Install or update dependencies | Manual approval, network restricted | Changes lockfiles, executes installers and expands supply-chain risk. |
| Run shell commands with pipes, downloads or elevated privileges | Manual or plan mode | Command effects are difficult to predict from a short prompt. |
| Build, sign, upload or publish | Manual approval by a release owner | These actions can create an irreversible public or billable result. |
| Access a file outside the project | One-time, session-scoped approval | Prevents a broad standing grant. |
| MCP tool or account action | Approve only the named tool and operation | External tools may have their own data and network paths. |
How product modes differ
Claude Code documents manual, acceptEdits and plan permission modes, along with a /sandbox command for filesystem and network isolation. VS Code describes manual, assisted and automatic permission levels. Cursor offers Allowlist and Auto-review behavior. GitHub Copilot provides local sandboxing that can restrict filesystem, network and credential use, while organizations can control access to cloud sandboxes. Names and defaults can change between releases, so verify the mode shown in your installed client before enabling it for a team.

Review MCP servers, extensions and agent instructions
Model Context Protocol servers and editor extensions are code execution paths, not harmless plug-ins. Before enabling one, identify its publisher, source repository, update mechanism, requested filesystem scope and network destinations. Remove tools that are not needed for the current task.
- List every enabled extension and MCP server on the machine and in the repository.
- Disable inherited or project-provided configurations until a maintainer approves them.
- Grant the narrowest tool operation, not blanket access to every operation exposed by a server.
- Keep approvals session-scoped and revoke them when the task ends.
- Watch for instructions that ask the agent to paste environment variables, alter permission files or ignore a previous safety rule.
Repository instructions can be useful for coding conventions, but they are untrusted input until reviewed. A prompt injection can be hidden in a comment, issue, asset metadata or generated file; sandboxing and narrow permissions limit what that text can accomplish.
Make changes reversible and reviewable
Require a clean diff before commit, merge or pull request. Review source, project settings, package manifests, generated files and deletion counts—not just the files the agent says it touched. Run unit tests plus game-specific checks such as scene loading, asset import, shader compilation, input mapping and a representative build.

VS Code documents separate worktrees and cloud-session isolation as options for agent work. A disposable worktree protects the main checkout from broad edits and makes rollback a directory deletion or branch reset rather than a forensic exercise. For a cloud session, ensure production credentials are not mounted and that downloaded artifacts are scanned before they return to the studio network.

Commit in small units
Ask for one coherent change at a time—such as a movement bug fix or a test harness—then commit it before starting another. If an agent introduces a bad package, generated binary or mass formatting change, a small commit history makes the reversal obvious. Never let an agent commit, merge or publish without a human review gate.
Copilot, VS Code, Claude Code and Cursor: what to compare
The product names below describe documented control surfaces, not a claim that one assistant is universally safest. Your operating system, extensions, account policy and project configuration determine the effective boundary.
| Assistant | Filesystem and secrets | Network and execution | Trust and review notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | Local sandboxing can restrict filesystem, network and credential use; organization controls can govern cloud-sandbox access. | Exact limits depend on the local and organizational configuration; confirm them before enabling agent tasks. | Use repository review, branch protection and human diff approval for game changes. |
| VS Code agent security | Workspace-limited access, extra read-only folders and sensitive-file glob patterns are documented. | Network access is a separate setting; manual, assisted and automatic permission levels are available. | Restricted Mode disables agents in untrusted workspaces. Sandboxing is an added layer, not a virtual machine, user-account boundary or replacement for endpoint security. Separate worktrees and cloud sessions are documented options. |
| Claude Code | /sandbox provides filesystem and network isolation. |
Permission modes include auto, manual, accept-edits and plan. | Anthropic reported an 84% reduction in permission prompts in internal usage. That is vendor-reported, not an independent game-development benchmark. Sandboxing is intended to contain successful prompt injection. |
| Cursor | .cursorignore can block selected files; sensitive actions require approval by default. |
Default tools cannot make arbitrary network requests. Auto-review runs allowlisted calls immediately, sandboxes shell commands when possible and sends other calls to a classifier. | Cursor explicitly says Auto-review is not a security boundary. Treat it as a convenience layer, not a substitute for manual approval, endpoint controls or review. |
A small-studio policy you can adopt
For everyday gameplay code, allow edits inside a dedicated worktree and permit only named local test commands. Keep network disabled. For dependency work, switch to a session with a registry allowlist and require lockfile review. For release work, use a separate account or machine, keep signing keys unavailable to the agent, require a release owner’s approval and perform the final build manually or in a controlled CI job.
Before each session
- Create or select an isolated branch or worktree.
- Confirm the workspace trust state and inspect enabled extensions and MCP servers.
- Check that secret files and production credentials are outside readable paths.
- Set network access and approval mode for this task, not for all future tasks.
- Define the exact test and acceptance criteria in the prompt.
After each session
- Inspect the complete diff, including hidden files and generated manifests.
- Review new dependencies, URLs and permission changes.
- Run tests and a representative Unity or Unreal build in a clean environment.
- Revoke temporary approvals and remove downloaded artifacts that are not needed.
- Commit only the reviewed changes and record who approved any exceptional access.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
“Allow everything” to stop prompts
Repeated approval clicks create approval fatigue. Anthropic warns that users may pay less attention when they constantly approve requests. Replace blanket approval with a narrow allowlist for a fixed local test command and keep sensitive operations manual.

Relying on an ignore file alone
An ignore pattern helps indexing and ordinary agent access, but it does not protect a secret already exposed to the process, another extension or the operating system. Move credentials out of the workspace and enforce operating-system and CI permissions as well.
Assuming automatic review is a sandbox
Cursor’s own documentation says Auto-review is not a security boundary. Use real filesystem and network isolation, human approval and endpoint controls when the consequence of a mistake is material.
Trusting a repository because the code looks familiar
Prompt injection can arrive through comments, assets, issue text or a plugin. Keep unknown projects restricted until their instructions, dependencies and extensions have been checked.

No setting makes an AI assistant inherently safe. A defensible setup limits what the agent can see, where it can write, whom it can contact, which tools it can invoke and how long each approval lasts. It also assumes that generated code can be wrong: tests, diff review, isolated worktrees and reversible commits remain mandatory. Use the lowest permission level that completes the task, raise it only for a specific need, and return to the restricted baseline when the task ends.
