What Settings Should You Use for Fallout: New Vegas on PC?

Use your monitor’s aspect ratio and native resolution as a starting point, try High or Ultra, and adjust VSync, effects, and water settings to suit your PC.

Start with your monitor’s aspect ratio and native resolution, then try the launcher’s High or Ultra preset. If performance is uneven, lower settings in small steps; for stuttering when looking at the sky, adjust the water settings first. There is no universal best profile: the right balance depends on your PC, display, and preference for image quality or steadier performance.

Recommended starting settings

  1. Choose the graphics adapter. If the launcher offers a graphics-adapter choice, select the adapter you want the game to use.
  2. Match your display. Set the game’s aspect ratio to match your monitor. Choose its native resolution for the sharpest image if performance remains smooth.
  3. Apply a preset. Try High or Ultra as a first pass on a reasonably modern PC. PC Gamer’s December 5, 2025 guide says a PC from roughly the past decade should generally handle maximum settings; that is editorial guidance, not a guarantee or a controlled benchmark. PC Gamer’s first-time player guide
  4. Change one thing at a time. If performance is poor, try lowering resolution or detail settings, then check whether the change helped before adjusting more options.

Native resolution improves sharpness on an LCD, but higher resolutions put more load on the system, especially the graphics card. Lower resolution or detail can trade image quality for performance. NVIDIA’s Fallout: New Vegas Tweak Guide

Which graphics options should you adjust?

VSync

VSync can limit the frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate and reduce screen tearing. It can also affect performance and mouse response. Turning it off removes that cap but may make tearing more visible. The game may keep VSync enabled even when its launcher checkbox is cleared. If the checkbox does not behave as expected, a driver profile or changing iPresentInterval in the game’s INI file are advanced workarounds; back up the file before editing it. Screen effects

HDR can produce a more vivid image, but may cost more performance than None or Bloom. NVIDIA describes Bloom’s glow in this game as unnatural-looking. Choose according to how the effects look on your display and whether performance is acceptable. NVIDIA’s Fallout: New Vegas Tweak Guide

Textures and antialiasing

High texture quality retains more detail. Lowering it reduces texture detail and may ease memory pressure or stuttering. Transparency multisampling can smooth foliage and fences, but its performance cost depends on the GPU and antialiasing level; lower or disable it if performance matters more than smoother edges. NVIDIA’s Fallout: New Vegas Tweak Guide

Fix stuttering when looking at the sky

Bethesda recommends changing water options for stuttering that occurs when you look up at the sky. In the launcher, open Options → Advanced → Water and lower Reflection Quality and Water Multisampling. If the stutter continues, uncheck Water Refractions and Water Reflections, then try reducing detail settings. Bethesda Support’s skybox-stutter instructions

What the system requirements do—and don’t—tell you

Bethesda lists legacy minimum requirements of Windows 7/Vista/XP, a dual-core 2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 10 GB of HDD space, and a GeForce 6- or ATI 1300XT-class video card or equivalent. These are the game’s published minimums, not a recommended modern configuration, a guarantee of compatibility with current Windows versions, or a promise of a particular frame rate. The PC manual lists video, gameplay, audio, and control options under the game’s Options menu. Graphics tuning is separate from gameplay and control preferences. Fallout: New Vegas PC manual
