In No Man’s Sky, keep Pugneum for a crafting or refining use you actually plan to make; use a current recipe or vendor option to decide what to do with the rest. Its listed recipes and exchange options are version-sensitive, so check them in your game before committing a large stockpile.
What Pugneum is and where it comes from
Pugneum is an in-game resource associated with Sentinels. The No Man’s Sky Wiki’s Pugneum page describes it as “This oily, unsettling liquid leaks from the circuitry of Sentinels” and lists destroyed Sentinels as a source. Hello Games’ Interceptor update notes also discuss harvesting or refining resources from defeated Sentinel forces.

Choose a use based on what you need
There is no established reserve amount or universally best use. First decide whether you have a specific recipe or refining goal; then consider whether the current game offers an exchange you would rather use.
| Option | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting | You intend to build an item that calls for Pugneum. | The current recipe and required quantity in your game. |
| Refining | You want the output of a Pugneum refining recipe. | Whether that recipe is available and what it produces in your game version. |
| Vendor exchange | You prefer the goods offered by a space station scrap dealer. | Whether the dealer currently accepts Pugneum and what the exchange offers. |
Check crafting recipes before spending it
The Wiki lists Pugneum as an ingredient for the Advanced Exocraft Laser and Consciousness Bridge. Its recipe information is marked current as of June 6, 2023, so treat those listings as a reference rather than a guarantee for every current build. If either item is part of your plan, verify its recipe in-game before selling or refining the material.

Refine it only for a useful output
The Wiki lists multiple refiner recipes involving Pugneum, including one that produces Nanite Clusters and combinations that produce other materials. The listed recipes may change across game versions. Check the recipe in your refiner or current in-game catalogue, and compare the output with what you need before processing a large amount.

Hello Games’ Origins update notes say the space station scrap dealer “will now exchange pugneum for their own selection of black market goods.” That documents an exchange introduced in that update, not a guarantee of the current dealer’s inventory or terms. Check the dealer in your save before making a trip or deciding how much Pugneum to spend.
