Nintendo’s Zelda timeline is a published fictional chronology of Hyrule, not a list of games in release order. Its shared history runs from Skyward Sword to The Minish Cap, Four Swords and then Ocarina of Time. That last game is the hinge: Link’s victory and time travel produce the child and adult eras, while Hyrule Historia also records a separate possibility in which Link is defeated. The result is the familiar child, adult and downfall branches.
The classic branches have clear game sequences and different versions of Hyrule. The exact relationship between those branches and Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom remains unresolved in Nintendo’s published material, so claims that the newer games definitely create a confirmed fourth branch or prove a specific convergence are interpretations rather than settled canon.

What the official Zelda timeline is
The timeline is Nintendo’s attempt to place the series’ fictional histories in chronological order. It appears in The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, whose second section, “The History of Hyrule: A Chronology,” sets out the sequence used for the classic games. The Japanese edition was released on 21 December 2011 for the series’ 25th anniversary.
Nintendo also included an important qualification: “this chronicle merely collects information that is believed to be true at this time.” That wording makes the chronology an official published framework while acknowledging that later games can add information or require changes. It is therefore more authoritative than a fan-made order, but it should not be treated as an immutable account that can never be revised.

The timeline answers a different question from release order. Release order tells you when Nintendo published each game; the timeline describes when each story is understood to occur in Hyrule’s fictional history. A game can be an early chapter chronologically even if players encountered it decades after another title.
The shared history before the branches
All three classic possibilities begin with the same trunk:
- Skyward Sword
- The Minish Cap
- Four Swords
- Ocarina of Time
Skyward Sword supplies the earliest setting in this published sequence and establishes the origins of the recurring conflict that defines later eras. The Minish Cap moves into an earlier Hyrule and introduces the Vaati material that continues into Four Swords. Ocarina of Time then brings together Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, the Master Sword and time travel. Those elements make it the event at which the common history can no longer be represented as one uninterrupted future.

Why Ocarina of Time creates branches
At the end of Ocarina of Time, Link defeats Ganondorf and is sent back to his childhood. The story therefore leaves behind two different historical perspectives on that victory.

The child-era consequence
In the child world, Link is young again but retains knowledge of Ganondorf’s plan. He can warn Zelda and the royal family before Ganondorf’s scheme reaches the same result. This creates a history in which the young hero’s warning changes what happens next.
The adult-era consequence
The adult future is the world Link has left. Because he has been removed from that era, it no longer has the Hero of Time present to oppose Ganondorf. Ganondorf eventually escapes and takes Hyrule. The gods respond by flooding the land, producing the world seen in The Wind Waker.

Hyrule Historia also records a third possibility: Link is defeated by Ganondorf at the pivotal confrontation. In that history Ganondorf takes the Triforce and the Sacred Realm becomes the Dark World. A later hero defeats him, but the chronology continues along a different route from both triumphant eras.
These are not three simultaneous versions of the same scene that players must reconcile moment by moment. They are three historical outcomes used to organize different groups of games around the turning point in Ocarina of Time.
The Child Timeline: “The Hero is Triumphant (Child era)”
The child branch begins when Link returns to his younger body and warns the royal family. Its representative sequence is:

- Majora’s Mask
- Twilight Princess
- Four Swords Adventures
Majora’s Mask
Link’s first major adventure after returning to childhood takes him to a parallel world rather than continuing directly through the same Hyrule crisis. The game belongs to the child era because it follows the version of Link who has been sent back from the adult future.

Later in this branch, Ganondorf is banished to the Twilight Realm and ultimately defeated. The game’s place here reflects the altered history created when the child Link warns the royal family instead of allowing the adult-era sequence to continue unchanged.
Four Swords Adventures
Four Swords Adventures continues the child-era line after Twilight Princess. It is the final representative title in the compact sequence commonly used to identify this branch.
The Adult Timeline: “The Hero is Triumphant (Adult era)”
The adult branch is the future that continues after Link is returned to childhood. Its representative sequence is:
- The Wind Waker
- Phantom Hourglass
- Spirit Tracks
The Wind Waker
With the Hero of Time absent, Ganondorf eventually takes Hyrule. The gods flood the land, leaving islands and a submerged old kingdom. The story follows a later Link and Tetra in that transformed setting, not the same adult Link who defeated Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time.

Phantom Hourglass
Phantom Hourglass follows Link and Tetra after The Wind Waker. It remains part of the adult-era continuation because it grows out of that seafaring future and its characters.
Spirit Tracks
In Spirit Tracks, a later generation establishes a new land. The game therefore represents a subsequent stage of the adult branch rather than a return to the flooded Hyrule of The Wind Waker.
The Downfall Timeline: “The Hero is Defeated”
The third branch assumes that Link loses to Ganondorf at Ocarina of Time. Ganondorf takes the Triforce, and the Sacred Realm becomes the Dark World. A later hero eventually defeats him, but the branch’s history then develops through a long sequence of games:
- A Link to the Past
- Oracle of Ages / Oracle of Seasons
- Link’s Awakening
- A Link Between Worlds
- Tri Force Heroes
- The Legend of Zelda
- The Adventure of Link
A Link to the Past
This is the first major representative of the defeated-hero history after the Dark World is created. Its later victory over Ganon supplies the recovery that allows the chronology to continue.
The Oracle games and Link’s Awakening
Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons occupy the next portion of the branch; they are commonly shown side by side because they are linked adventures rather than a single fixed “ages first, seasons second” order. Link’s Awakening follows them in the published sequence.

A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes
The branch then moves to A Link Between Worlds, followed by Tri Force Heroes. These games continue the defeated-hero line rather than opening a new classic branch.
The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link
The original The Legend of Zelda and its direct follow-up, The Adventure of Link, conclude the representative sequence listed for the downfall timeline. Their position does not mean they were released first in chronological terms; they are late entries in this fictional history.

The table describes representative chronological paths, not recommended play orders. You can play the games in release order, follow one branch from its earliest listed title, or choose games by era; none of those choices changes the published framework.

The exact placement of the two newest mainline games is not settled by the official material summarized here. Nintendo Life reported in September 2024 that Nintendo had shown a newer presentation separating Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom from the earlier group, while its guide noted that there is no official exact answer for where Tears of the Kingdom sits.
The safest description is that both are far-future Hyrule stories whose precise relationship to the three classic branches remains open. Readers may encounter theories that the branches eventually converge, that the games occupy a confirmed fourth branch, or that specific details prove one branch. Unless Nintendo states one of those ideas directly, treat it as interpretation rather than established chronology.
This uncertainty does not erase the classic timeline. The pre-Ocarina of Time trunk and the child, adult and defeated-hero sequences remain the published framework for the games Nintendo placed there; it simply means the newer games cannot yet be assigned to one exact slot with the same confidence.
How to use the timeline without getting confused
- Separate chronology from release history. A game’s position in Hyrule’s history is not the year Nintendo released it.
- Use Ocarina of Time as the hinge. The child and adult eras both come from Link’s victory, while the downfall branch records his defeat.
- Keep “child” and “adult” literal. They identify the historical outcomes after Link is sent back, not three different versions of one playable campaign.
- Do not force the newest games into an unconfirmed slot. Describe Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom as far-future stories until Nintendo provides a more exact placement.
- Remember the qualification in Hyrule Historia. Nintendo’s wording leaves room for the chronology to be updated as the series grows.
The reference book behind the framework
The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia is the central physical reference for this chronology. Alongside “The History of Hyrule: A Chronology,” it contains Zelda artwork and broader game-history material. Its publication in 2011 established the three-branch presentation that readers usually mean when they ask about the official Zelda timeline.
