Fallout 4’s main story is set in 2287, in the late 23rd century. That is 210 years after the Great War of 2077, in the post-apocalyptic Boston region the game calls the Commonwealth. Its opening begins before the war, in 2077, before the story jumps ahead.
When does Fallout 4 take place?
The game’s central postwar story takes place in 2287. Bethesda’s official Fallout timeline places both the Great War and Fallout 4 in that chronology: the bombs fall in 2077, and the game’s main events occur in 2287. Subtracting those years gives an interval of 210 years.

Why does the game open in 2077?
The opening shows the protagonist’s life before the bombs fall. The character is then frozen during the 2077 war and wakes two centuries into the future, when the postwar story begins. So 2077 is the prologue era; it is not the year of the game’s main story.
Where is Fallout 4 set?
The story is centered on Boston and its surrounding region on the East Coast. In the game, this postwar territory is known as the Commonwealth. The setting is part of Fallout’s fictional, retrofuturistic alternate history—not a real historical period.
