Buy a glass display cabinet only after confirming four things: the complete exterior footprint and delivery route, the usable interior space for your largest item, the exact shelf-load rating, and a practical wall-anchoring point. A cabinet can fit a wall yet fail at the doorway, leave a collectible too tall for the shelf, or become unsafe when loaded. Tempered glass reduces injury risk when it breaks, but chipped edges and scratches can still cause sudden failure.
The specifications below use current 2026 listings and safety guidance. Retail stock, prices, package measurements and regional models can change, so verify the exact product page and assembly manual for your location before ordering.

Why these checks matter for a games collection
Display cabinets are usually advertised by outside dimensions. Those measurements include the frame, glass, back panel, door hardware and any base, so the usable width, depth and height inside are smaller. A boxed console, arcade controller, statue or collector’s edition may fit the advertised width but collide with the door, back panel or shelf supports.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Glass also changes the risk calculation. Tempered panels are processed to be stronger than ordinary glass and to break into smaller granules, but they are not unbreakable. A tall, narrow cabinet can tip if a door is opened forcefully or a child pulls on it. Shelf ratings are not universal: two cabinets with similar-looking glass can have very different limits. Treat the cabinet, shelves, fasteners, wall and floor as one system.

Measure the room, the cabinet and the route
Record the complete exterior footprint
Measure the available wall and floor area in millimetres or inches, then compare it with the cabinet’s listed width, depth and height. Include baseboards, chair rails, radiators, outlets and trim that could stop the cabinet from sitting flush. Check that the floor is level; a slight twist in a tall frame can make a glass door bind and put uneven pressure on panels.
Do not plan to use every millimetre. Leave enough side clearance to assemble the frame, open the door and reach the wall fastener. A cabinet pushed tightly against a side wall may have a door that opens only partway, making shelves difficult to load and increasing the chance of striking the glass.
Measure usable interior space, not just outside size
Measure your largest object at its true display size, including a stand, protective case, controller cable or removable base. Record width, depth and height, then add the clearance needed to lift the object over a shelf edge and remove it later. Check each shelf opening: shelf supports, hinges and door seals can reduce the clear passage even when the cabinet’s internal dimensions look adequate.
For a games collection, measure unusually large pieces first: a boxed limited-edition console, racing wheel, arcade stick, helmet, statue or diorama. Smaller game cases can be arranged after the largest item has a confirmed location. If the manufacturer does not publish interior dimensions or shelf-to-shelf spacing, ask for the assembly manual or obtain those measurements from the retailer rather than estimating from the exterior.
Check ceiling clearance and the anti-tip point
Measure from the finished floor to the ceiling and compare it with the cabinet height. A tall unit needs additional space above it for tipping restraint hardware and for the tool used to tighten the fastener. Do not assume a cabinet that touches the ceiling can be safely anchored; a bracket may need a horizontal surface or a specific angle that the cramped gap does not provide.
Test the delivery route
Measure the narrowest point from the unloading area to the room:

Use the packaged dimensions when available, not only the assembled height. A cabinet may fit after assembly but be impossible to turn through a stairwell while still boxed. If package dimensions are not stated, request them before paying for delivery. Never remove glass panels in an improvised way just to make a package fit; follow the manufacturer’s disassembly instructions.
Calculate shelf loads before you buy
Use the exact model rating
Find the maximum load for each shelf in the model’s specifications. The number applies to the complete load on that shelf, not to each object or to a small area of the glass. Keep the total below the stated limit, spread objects over the shelf, and place heavier pieces lower where practical.
For example, if a statue weighs 2.2 kg and its protective case weighs 0.6 kg, that shelf already carries 2.8 kg. On a shelf rated at 3 kg, there is little working margin for another item or for an inaccurate household scale. A shelf that appears thicker, or a replacement shelf from another model, does not automatically have the same rating.
Weigh the display as it will be used
Use a luggage or household scale to weigh boxed consoles, cases, stands, power bricks and display risers together. Include packaging that will remain on display. If several light items are grouped on an acrylic riser, count the riser’s weight as part of the shelf load. Avoid dropping objects onto the glass: a static rating does not describe impact loads.
Keep point loads and movement under control
Place feet, stands and risers so the load is supported by the shelf supports as designed. Do not concentrate a heavy object on a tiny contact point near an unsupported edge. During installation, put a padded cloth on the shelf before lowering an item. If a shelf bows, creaks, shifts in its supports or shows a new crack, remove the load and stop using it until the shelf and supports have been inspected.

| Model | Exterior dimensions | Maximum load per shelf | Glass and anchoring information | Interior details in the listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA BRIMNES | 31 1/2 in W × 13 3/4 in D × 74 3/4 in H | 9 lb per shelf | Tempered-glass shelves and panels; wall anchoring required | Shelf count, adjustment range, usable interior and package measurements: not stated |
| IKEA BLÅLIDEN | 35 cm W × 32 cm D × 151 cm H | 3 kg per shelf | Tempered-glass side, back, door and shelves; wall anchoring required | Shelf count, adjustment range, usable interior and package measurements: not stated |
| IKEA DETOLF | 43 cm W × 37 cm D × 163 cm H | 3.50 kg per shelf | Tempered-glass panels; wall fixing required | Shelf count, adjustment range, usable interior and package measurements: not stated |
Do not compare these cabinets by height alone. Their dimensions are given in different unit systems, and their shelf ratings are not interchangeable. A 9 lb rating is approximately 4.1 kg, but the manufacturer’s stated unit and model-specific instructions control. Confirm whether a replacement shelf, lighting kit or accessory changes the allowable load.
Understand tempered-glass safety
What tempered glass does
IKEA’s BRIMNES guidance states that tempered glass is “4-5 times stronger and more resistant to breaking than regular glass.” If it does break, it shatters into many granular pieces, reducing the likelihood of long, sharp shards. This is a safety advantage, not permission to exceed the shelf rating or ignore damage.
Why edges and scratches matter
The same guidance warns: “Handle with care! A damaged edge or scratched surface can cause the glass to suddenly crack or break. Avoid bumps from the side – this is where the glass is most vulnerable.” Edge damage can occur when a panel is set on a hard floor, struck by a tool or forced into a twisted frame.
Recommended Free Tools
Inspect every panel at delivery, before removing protective packaging and again after assembly. Look at all corners and edges for chips, star-shaped impact marks, scratches and cloudy lines. Photograph damage, keep the packaging and contact the seller or manufacturer for a replacement. Do not install a visibly damaged panel, cover a crack with tape, drill it, sand it or attempt to cut tempered glass.
Handle panels without stressing the frame
- Assemble on a clean, padded surface where a panel cannot slide onto tile or concrete.
- Lift glass by its edges with two people when the instructions require it; do not lift a cabinet by a door or a loose panel.
- Keep tools, screws and metal brackets away from the glass while positioning it.
- Install the specified shelf supports fully and evenly before loading anything.
- Prevent side impacts from doors, carts, vacuum cleaners and nearby furniture.
Plan wall anchoring as part of the purchase
Why a tall cabinet needs restraint
A loaded display cabinet has a high centre of gravity. An open door, a child climbing, an uneven floor or a small push can move that centre of gravity beyond the base. Treat a tall cabinet as a tipping hazard even if it feels stable when empty.
The BRIMNES warning says: “WARNING! Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored. Use suitable screws and plugs for your home. If you are uncertain, seek professional advice.” The DETOLF guidance likewise says the furniture must be fixed to the wall with the enclosed wall fastener and that different wall materials require different fixing devices, sold separately.

Match the fastener to the wall
Identify whether the fixing point is a wood stud, masonry, concrete, brick or hollow drywall construction. Use the screw, plug, anchor or masonry fastener specified for that material and for the cabinet’s bracket. A generic drywall plug may not be suitable for a heavy, tall unit. If you cannot identify the wall structure or cannot reach a sound fixing point, ask a qualified installer rather than guessing.

Install the restraint in a controlled sequence
- Read the cabinet’s assembly and anti-tip instructions before positioning the unit. Confirm which bracket, hole and fastener are required.
- Locate the wall fixing point and verify that the planned height leaves enough ceiling clearance for drilling and tightening.
- Assemble the cabinet and place it on the final floor position. Keep doors closed while moving it.
- Level the cabinet using the intended feet or adjustment points. A level frame prevents the door and glass from being stressed by a twist.
- Mark the bracket location through the cabinet’s fixing hole. Move the unit if the mark does not align with a suitable structural point.
- Install the correct screw and plug or anchor for the wall material. Do not substitute a shorter fastener that fails to engage the wall properly.
- Attach the cabinet to the wall, tighten without crushing the frame, and verify that the bracket cannot lift away.
- Open and close the door gently, check that glass remains seated, and recheck the cabinet after loading it.
Do not omit anchoring because the cabinet is against a wall or because it contains only light games. Wall restraint is a stability requirement, not an optional accessory.
Compare the whole cabinet system
Price and outside height reveal little about whether a cabinet is suitable for a games collection. Create a side-by-side worksheet before ordering:
| Check | What to record | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior footprint | Width, depth and height, including feet and trim | Determines floor fit, side clearance and ceiling clearance |
| Usable interior | Clear width, depth, height and each shelf opening | Confirms that the largest collectible can enter and remain inside |
| Shelf arrangement | Number of shelves, fixed or adjustable supports, and adjustment increments | Controls how efficiently different-sized games and figures can be displayed |
| Load rating | Maximum load per shelf, with the stated unit | Prevents overload and avoids assumptions based on another model |
| Glass construction | Tempered or regular glass; which panels are glass | Sets handling and breakage risk |
| Frame and base | Frame material, feet and leveling method | Affects rigidity, floor contact and door alignment |
| Door clearance | Opening direction, swing arc and handle projection | Determines access and prevents impacts against nearby furniture |
| Anchoring | Bracket supplied, fastener type, wall compatibility and ceiling space | Confirms that anti-tip installation is actually possible |
| Package information | Carton dimensions and weights; if unavailable, request them | Prevents delivery failures at doors, stairs and turns |
| Lighting and cables | Existing cable holes, clearance and heat-management instructions | Allows lighting or powered displays without pinching doors or glass |
| Warranty and returns | Coverage for damaged glass, missing hardware and delivery damage | Provides a remedy if a panel arrives chipped or a part is missing |
A practical buying checklist
- Measure the wall, floor, baseboards, ceiling and door-opening arc.
- Measure the delivery route, including the packaged turning space and stair or lift constraints.
- Measure and weigh the largest item, including its stand, case and cables.
- Check every shelf opening and the shelf-to-shelf clearance against those measurements.
- Write down the exact maximum shelf load for the specific model and keep a margin below it.
- Confirm that the shelf supports and frame are designed for the intended load distribution.
- Choose tempered glass where available and learn the model’s handling warnings.
- Inspect all glass edges and corners before assembly; reject or report damaged panels.
- Identify the wall material and obtain compatible screws and plugs if they are not supplied.
- Verify that the anti-tip bracket can be installed with adequate ceiling clearance.
- Confirm the door swing, handle clearance, floor level and access to outlets.
- Save the assembly manual, specification page and delivery photographs for future replacement or warranty needs.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
The cabinet fits the wall but not the room
Baseboards or a door swing can steal the clearance shown on a floor plan. Move the planned footprint away from the obstruction or select a shallower model. Do not force the door against a wall; repeated impacts can damage glass and hinges.
A collectible fits outside measurements but not through the door
Recheck the clear opening with the door fully open and account for hinges, seals and shelf supports. If the object still cannot enter, choose a cabinet with a wider opening or a documented removable shelf. Never remove structural glass without instructions that specifically permit it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe shelf rating was copied from another cabinet
Remove the load and locate the exact model’s specification. Ratings such as 9 lb, 3 kg and 3.50 kg belong to the listed models and cannot be transferred to a similar-looking cabinet.

A panel arrives with a tiny chip
Do not dismiss edge damage as cosmetic. Stop assembly, photograph the panel and packaging, and request a replacement. Tempered glass can fail suddenly after an edge has been compromised.
The cabinet is stable until the door opens
Install the required wall restraint and level the frame. If no suitable fixing point exists, relocate the cabinet or obtain professional advice; placing heavier objects on the bottom does not replace anchoring.
The door binds after loading
Unload the cabinet, check that it is level, confirm that each panel is seated in its supports and retighten fasteners only as directed. A twisted frame can transfer stress to glass, so do not keep using a binding door until alignment is corrected.

Make the decision
Choose a cabinet only when all four gates pass: the assembled and packaged unit fits the room and route; every intended object fits the usable openings; each shelf remains below its model-specific rating with a sensible margin; and the glass and anti-tip system can be installed without damage or improvised hardware. If any measurement, load rating or wall-fixing detail is missing, pause the order and obtain that information. A slightly smaller cabinet with known clearances and a sound anchor is safer and more useful than a larger cabinet that merely looks right on a product thumbnail.
