Before paying a deposit or accepting delivery, verify who is named as the vehicle’s manufacturer in your market, check the specific VIN for recalls, get warranty and service commitments in writing, and match safety ratings to the exact model and specification. A joint-venture badge alone does not establish which company is responsible for certification, warranty claims or recall work.
1. Find out which company is accountable in your market
A partnership announcement or shared brand does not by itself identify the legal entity responsible for vehicle approval, warranty coverage or safety notices. Start with the certification label on the vehicle and ask the seller to identify, in writing, the entity that issues the warranty and handles safety recalls.
- Record the VIN and the manufacturer name shown on the vehicle certification label.
- Ask which legal entity issues the warranty, sends safety notices and arranges recall repairs.
- Check local vehicle-approval or manufacturer records where available.
- Do not infer regulatory responsibility from the partners’ ownership split alone.
For the United States, an NHTSA interpretation explains that a 50-percent joint-venture partner involved in vehicle design and controlling compliance with safety standards may be identified as the manufacturer for certification purposes. That interpretation is specific to the US regulatory context; check the rules and records for the country where you are buying.
2. Check the VIN for recalls and other actions
Search the VIN in the national regulator’s recall database and the manufacturer’s owner portal, if available. Ask the dealer to document whether the vehicle has an open safety recall, service campaign or software action, and whether any required work will be completed before handover. Repeat the check close to delivery because records can change after a model launches.

- NHTSA’s US recall lookup and Toyota’s US VIN lookup are examples of regulator and manufacturer search tools.
- In the UK, GOV.UK’s vehicle recall service offers checks using a vehicle registration or make and model in relevant cases. Its guidance says safety recall repairs are usually free to the owner.
- Ask whether an item is a formal safety recall or a different customer-satisfaction or limited service campaign; remedies and terms can differ.
These tools and rules are jurisdiction-specific. Use the regulator and manufacturer services for the vehicle’s sales market, not a lookup from another country.
3. Get the exact warranty and support terms in writing
Request the warranty booklet for the exact market, model year and trim before signing. A verbal assurance or warranty for a related vehicle is not a substitute. Have the seller point to the relevant clauses and confirm the following in writing:

- When coverage begins, its time and distance limits, and exclusions.
- Separate terms for the battery, hybrid or electric-drive components, electronics, corrosion, paint and wear items, where applicable.
- Required service intervals, whether authorized servicing is mandatory, and how missed or delayed maintenance affects coverage.
- Whether the warranty transfers to a later owner and how claims are handled if the joint venture or importer changes.
- Roadside assistance, towing, courtesy vehicles and any cross-border coverage.
- Authorized repair locations, parts ordering, software updates and an escalation contact if the selling dealer cannot resolve a problem.
Terms can be highly specific. For example, Toyota’s US announcement for the 2026 RAV4 lists distinct basic, powertrain, corrosion, hybrid-component, battery, maintenance and roadside-assistance terms. Those are terms for that US model-year vehicle, not a benchmark or promise for another SUV.
4. Match safety ratings to the vehicle you will receive
Look for a crash-test result from the recognized independent or official program serving the purchase market. Confirm that it covers the same model year, body style, powertrain and market specification. Then compare the tested safety equipment with the delivered trim: some features may be optional or unavailable on the version being sold.

5. Put the vehicle and the deal on paper
Before you sign, make sure the purchase documents identify the vehicle and the full terms of the transaction. At delivery, check that the vehicle matches those documents.

- Get the VIN, exact trim and specification, included equipment, final on-road price, taxes and fees, finance terms, deposit conditions, delivery date and cancellation or delay remedies on signed paperwork.
- Confirm which options are factory-fitted, dealer-installed or merely promised, and whether each is included in the price.
- At handover, reconcile the VIN and trim against the order. Inspect paint, glass, wheels, tires, lights, interior, warning lamps and software; check included charging or emergency equipment and both keys where applicable.
- Record existing damage and unresolved fixes in writing before accepting the vehicle.
6. Compare two SUVs using the same evidence
If you are choosing between vehicles, apply the same market-specific checks to each rather than comparing one model’s verified terms with another’s launch claims.
