Start with the shutdown notice, then preserve each kind of data according to where it lives. Record the exact closure time zone and every earlier export or migration deadline. While logins still work, capture important screens and clips, copy accessible local files to storage outside the service, confirm the latest platform-cloud sync, and ask the publisher what—if anything—can be exported or moved. Keep the account open until those steps and any support requests are finished.
A backup cannot turn every online game into a playable offline copy. Screenshots and video document what you could see, local files preserve only what you can access, and platform cloud storage covers only the files that the particular game developer configured. Characters, inventories, currencies, rankings and entitlements held only on publisher servers require an official migration, export or offline arrangement.

What should I save first when an online game is shutting down?
Save the deadline and your irreplaceable evidence first, because access can end before you have time to sort files. Work in this order:
- Preserve the official notice. Save a screenshot or local copy of the publisher announcement, support page or in-game message.
- Write down every cutoff. Record the shutdown date, time zone, last accepted login, data-request deadline and any earlier migration or export deadline.
- Capture visible progress. Save your profile, character, inventory, unlocks, settings, achievements, player ID and meaningful customizations.
- Inventory files by location. Separate local saves, platform-cloud files, publisher-server data, screenshots, clips, replays, purchases and account records.
- Submit title-specific requests. Use the publisher’s official process for a data download, migration or offline option while authentication still works.
- Make an independent copy. Move accessible media and files to a computer, external USB drive or other storage not dependent on the closing service.
- Keep the account active. Do not close or delete the platform or publisher account until exports, transfers and support cases are resolved.
This sequence protects the information most likely to disappear: server-side progress and the ability to authenticate. It also gives you a dated record if a support team asks for account or purchase details.

How do I find the real shutdown deadline?
Use the game publisher’s own shutdown notice or support channel as the controlling source. Community posts and store-page language can omit a regional cutoff or an earlier export deadline.
Record more than the calendar date
- The precise date and time, including the stated time zone.
- The final moment at which logins, support requests or transfers are accepted.
- A separate deadline for personal-data requests, exports or migration.
- Which regions, platforms, editions and modes are affected.
- What the publisher says will remain available, such as offline play, local modes or previously downloaded content.
- The support contact and any case number you receive.
Save the announcement itself because a support page may be edited after the servers close. If the notice is shown in-game, capture it before dismissing it. A platform’s shutdown listing can illustrate why assumptions are unsafe: PlayStation documents cases in which a title became unplayable because it required online access, while MLB The Show 19 and MLB The Show 20 retained offline play after online service ended. The outcome is specific to each title.

Can I save my character, inventory and currency?
Only if the publisher provides a supported export, migration or offline arrangement. A screenshot proves what was visible at a moment in time, but it does not recreate a server-held character, item, balance, rank or entitlement in another installation.
Classify each item by where it is stored
| Storage or method | What it can preserve | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshots and video clips | A visual record of visible progress, settings and memorable sessions | They do not recreate characters, items, currency or entitlements |
| Local file copy | Files the player can access and the game or platform permits copying | Server-bound state may be absent, and files may remain account- or platform-dependent |
| Platform cloud save | The files configured for that exact game and account | The developer chooses coverage; authentication and service access may still matter |
| Publisher data request | Whatever the publisher supplies in its documented response | A personal-data archive may not be a playable save |
| Official migration or export | The data and destination explicitly named by the publisher | It exists only when announced and can have its own deadline |
Steam explains that developers decide which user files a game uploads to Steam Cloud. A game can therefore show a cloud feature while excluding the progress you care about; if cloud functionality is disabled, relevant progress remains on the machine where it was created. Check the exact game’s cloud settings and confirm that the latest session finished syncing instead of treating a cloud icon as a complete backup.
Ask what “data download” means
Publishers may distinguish a personal-information archive from a transferable save. Ask whether the response includes characters, inventory, paid content, currencies, achievements, account identifiers or only legal and account records. Ask for the file format, destination, processing time and final request date. A shutdown FAQ for one title from MY.GAMES, for example, described submitting personal-data access or deletion requests through support during the shutdown period; that process is a title-specific example, not a universal playable-save promise.

How do I save screenshots, clips and replays?
Capture the material while the game still authenticates, then export a copy outside the platform or game service. Prioritize information that cannot be inferred later.

Capture these screens
- Profile name, player ID, account identifier and linked publisher account.
- Character appearance, level, loadout, inventory and notable unlocks.
- Currency balances, purchased items, season or event progress and achievement pages.
- Settings, control layouts, custom designs, maps, builds and other work you created.
- Friends, guild or team information you want to preserve, subject to other players’ privacy.
- Receipts, order numbers and entitlement screens for paid content.
Use the platform’s capture workflow
On PlayStation 5, the official capture workflow uses the Create button to take a screenshot, save recent gameplay or start a recording; PlayStation documents a separate capture process for PlayStation 4. After capturing, open the console’s media gallery or the documented export option and copy files to a computer, compatible USB device or another independent destination. Menu labels and storage requirements vary by console, so follow the instructions for your exact model.
Keep clips in a normal video format when the platform offers an export choice. A replay that exists only inside a closing service may disappear even if the game’s local installation remains. Preserve the original file and, where practical, a second copy in another location. These records are documentation and memorabilia, not a method for importing server-side progress into another game.
How do I copy local saves without losing the original?
Use the game and platform’s documented file-management method, and copy rather than move the source. Do not experiment with the only save during the final access window.
- Finish a normal session. Save in-game, return to the title screen if required, and wait for any platform-cloud indicator to complete.
- Locate the permitted files. Use the platform’s save-management screen or the game’s documented folder. Some systems restrict direct access to save data.
- Copy to an independent destination. An external USB drive is suitable for files the device allows you to copy; verify that the drive is compatible with the console or computer.
- Label the copy. Include the title, edition, platform, region, account, profile and capture date.
- Verify on a duplicate. Check that files are present and readable. If the game supports offline or local loading, test only a duplicate so the original remains untouched.
- Keep both copies. Store the original on its normal device and the backup separately until you know what the publisher will support.
An external drive preserves only the files actually copied to it. It cannot generate an export for an online character or recover a balance that never existed in local storage. Device policies, encryption and account binding can also prevent a copied file from loading on another system.

What should I ask the publisher before support closes?
Contact official support before the final login date and ask precise, answerable questions rather than requesting a generic “backup.”
- Will characters, inventory, currencies, paid content, achievements or rankings migrate?
- Is there an official export, and what exact file format and destination does it use?
- Is the download a personal-data archive, a playable save or both?
- Will an offline mode, local server or authorized archival build remain available?
- Does the request need to be submitted before shutdown, and when will support stop processing it?
- Which account, region, platform ID or proof of purchase must be supplied?
Save the request, confirmation email and support response. If a publisher offers migration, follow its named destination and deadline exactly; do not rely on a community-created workaround that could expose credentials or violate the game’s rules.
Should I delete my account after the shutdown?
Usually, no—not until every wanted file, receipt and support case is complete. Deleting an account can remove the very records needed to prove ownership or retrieve a promised export.
Steam states that account deletion is permanent and removes licenses, profile content, gifts, inventory, wallet funds and associated information. It also says profile screenshots, artwork and persona history are removed. Save anything you want first, and keep the account available while a publisher or platform still has an open request.
Store account details securely
- Account names, player IDs and linked publisher accounts.
- Login email and region, stored securely rather than in a public note.
- Platform IDs, order numbers, receipts and entitlement records.
- Support case numbers, export confirmations and migration instructions.
- A dated list of which files were copied and where each copy is stored.
Do not share passwords or recovery codes in screenshots, clips or public posts. If you eventually close an account, first confirm that the publisher has completed every export and that you have retained the records you are legally and practically allowed to keep.

What should I check during the final session?
Use a short final-session checklist rather than assuming a last login automatically saves everything.
- Sign in to the correct region, platform profile and linked publisher account.
- Open the profile, inventory, achievements and settings pages you want to document.
- Take screenshots and clips, then confirm they appear in the media gallery.
- Complete one normal save and wait for the platform-cloud status to finish.
- Copy accessible local files and exported media to independent storage.
- Submit any official data request or migration and retain its receipt.
- Re-read the notice for a separate time-zone or export cutoff.
After the last session, try launching only the modes the publisher says will remain. A title may retain an offline campaign while online matchmaking, accounts or inventories stop working. Do not promise yourself that a server, license or account state can be restored unless the publisher documents that outcome.
What can I still access after the servers close?
That depends on how the title was built and what the shutdown notice promises. A game with a self-contained offline mode may continue to launch, while a title that requires authentication can become unplayable even when its files remain installed.

Local media should remain viewable in the platform gallery or your independent storage. A local save may load only on the original account, edition or platform, and a cloud copy may require the platform service to authenticate. Server-only progress, balances and entitlements are not recoverable merely because an installation or screenshot still exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my save file still work after the servers close?
Only if the game supports offline or local loading and the save contains what that mode needs. A file can remain on your device yet fail when the title requires publisher authentication or server-side character data.

How can I download clips that are stored on a console?
Open the console’s capture or media gallery, select the screenshots and videos, and use the documented export or USB-transfer option for that model. Confirm the files play from the independent copy before deleting anything from the console.
Can a privacy-law data request give me a playable copy of my account?
Not necessarily. Such requests may return personal information, account history or transaction records rather than the game’s internal save format; ask the publisher to identify exactly what the response contains.
What account information is most useful if support asks me to prove ownership?
Keep the account email, player and platform IDs, region, linked accounts, order numbers, receipts and prior support case numbers. Store them privately and attach only what the publisher’s official process requests.
Is an external USB drive enough to preserve an online game?
It is useful for accessible screenshots, clips and local files, but it cannot copy data that exists only on publisher servers. Maintain the original files and verify the copied files rather than assuming the drive is a complete game backup.
