If a Steam game says steam_api.dll or steam_api64.dll is missing, verify the game files in Steam first. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one from another game. The correct file is normally supplied beside the game’s executable, and Steam can usually restore it safely.
What the Steam API DLL does
steam_api.dll is generally the 32-bit Steamworks runtime, while steam_api64.dll is generally the 64-bit version. The exact file depends on the game’s build and architecture.

Steamworks games normally ship this DLL in the game’s installation directory, beside or near the game executable. It is not normally installed globally in C:WindowsSystem32. The DLL allows the game to communicate with the active Steam client for features such as ownership checks, achievements, cloud saves and multiplayer services. Keep the full error wording. “Missing” and “unable to initialize” require different troubleshooting.

1. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart Steam.
- Launch the game from the Steam Library.
Steam compares the local installation with its server-side manifest and downloads missing or damaged files. It may report that some files failed validation and will be reacquired. A small number of changed files can be normal when they are user-specific settings or files modified during play; this does not automatically mean the repair failed. Steam’s official instructions are available on its file-verification support page.
If verification restores the DLL and the game launches, no manual DLL installation is needed.
2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed a legitimate game file, although a detection can also indicate a modified or malicious installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Go to Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming the game folder or
steam_api.dll/steam_api64.dll.
Do not restore the file automatically just because its name looks familiar. Restore it only when the game was installed through the official Steam client, the path is the expected game directory, and the detection has been assessed as a false positive. Scan the computer first, then run Steam’s file verification again.

If antivirus quarantines the file repeatedly, contact the game developer or security vendor. The cause could be a false positive, an unsafe mod, a compromised launcher or an unofficial game copy. Do not permanently disable Windows Defender or add a broad exclusion for the entire Steam folder.
3. Run the game’s bundled prerequisites
Some games include installers for Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, PhysX, .NET or other runtimes. In the game’s installation folder, look for directories such as:

These packages can fix dependency errors, but they do not recreate steam_api.dll. Use them when the error names a Microsoft runtime or when the game’s bundled installer requires them.

4. Repair Visual C++ only when appropriate
For errors naming VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll or a similar Microsoft runtime, install or repair the supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official documentation.
- 32-bit games commonly require the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
- 64-bit games normally require the x64 package.
- ARM64 systems require the ARM64 package where applicable.
Official Microsoft download links include x86, x64 and ARM64. Microsoft warns against using redistributable installers that are not downloaded from Microsoft or signed by Microsoft.
5. Restart Steam and remove launch conflicts
For “failed to load” or “unable to initialize” errors:

- Exit the game.
- Choose Steam > Exit.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Close remaining Steam processes if they are still running.
- Start Steam, sign in to the account that owns the game, and launch it from the Library.
Also temporarily close nonessential overlays, recording tools, mod loaders, injectors, hardware-monitoring utilities and third-party launchers. Remove mods and restore original files before testing. Valve’s general launch troubleshooting guidance also recommends updating Windows and device drivers, verifying files and checking for interfering software.

Optional diagnostic checks
These PowerShell commands can confirm whether a DLL exists, but existence alone does not prove that it is safe or compatible:

6. Reinstall the game if verification fails
Before uninstalling, back up local saves and confirm that Steam Cloud synchronization has completed. Then uninstall the game through Steam, restart the client, and reinstall it to a library with enough free space. Test the clean installation before adding mods or third-party tools.
If the DLL disappears immediately after a clean installation, investigate antivirus detections, possible disk problems and game-specific support reports instead of repeatedly downloading replacement files.
What not to do
- Do not use generic DLL download websites. The file may contain malware or be incompatible with the exact game build.
- Do not copy the DLL from another game. Games can use different architectures, SDK versions and integrations.
- Do not install it in System32. Steamworks DLLs are normally game-local.
- Do not use unofficial Steam emulator or crack DLLs. They can bypass licensing, break authentication and expose the system to malware.
- Do not disable antivirus globally. Investigate quarantine and confirmed false positives instead.
If the game is not a genuine Steam installation
A standalone publisher build or another launcher may require a different package and may not use Steamworks. A copied Steam folder can also lack ownership information, launch configuration or required metadata. Install the game from its authorized source or contact the publisher. Do not attempt to replace its Steam API files with unofficial versions.
When to contact support
Contact the game developer if verification, a clean launch and prerequisite repair do not solve the issue. Include:
