An empty PlayStation box is a non-delivery problem, not a normal return. Photograph the parcel and every seal before discarding or sending anything back, confirm that the console is not in a split shipment, then contact the seller named on your receipt with the order number. Ask for a replacement or a full refund and keep a written case record. If the seller will not resolve a documented claim, escalate through the applicable payment-dispute and consumer-protection process without misstating what happened.
Secure the evidence before you move the package
Your first priority is preserving proof of what arrived. Do not throw away the shipping carton, PlayStation product box, inserts, tape, labels or packing material. Do not return the package until the seller gives you instructions in writing; an unapproved return can make it harder to show what was delivered.

- Photograph the package as found. Take wide shots of the outer carton, then close-ups of every shipping label, barcode, seal, tear, dent, puncture, retaped area and other sign of tampering. Photograph the product box from all sides.
- Photograph the contents. Show the empty interior, every compartment, protective insert and accessory space. If anything is present but the console or another line item is missing, photograph the incomplete contents clearly.
- Record the delivery facts. Write down the delivery date and time, tracking number, condition of the parcel and the time you reported the problem. Save the order confirmation, shipment email, tracking history and any delivery photo.
- Preserve carrier information. Ask the carrier or retailer whether the parcel’s recorded weight, acceptance scan and delivery scan can be preserved for the investigation. A parcel scale can document the weight you receive, but it is optional evidence, not a substitute for a seller investigation.
Keep the package in a safe, dry place. Do not alter labels or seals, and do not accuse a particular driver, warehouse worker or courier unless you have evidence identifying that person. Describe only what you observed.

Before opening a claim, sign in to the retailer’s order page and compare the exact line items with the shipment details. PlayStation says an order can be divided into multiple shipments. The console, a disc drive, controller, game or other accessory may have a separate tracking number or a later estimated delivery date.

Check the order record
- Match the missing item to the order’s line-item name and quantity.
- Open each shipment entry and note its tracking number and status.
- Read the shipment email for language such as “ships separately” or multiple package numbers.
- Check every compartment in the product box, including under cardboard inserts and beneath accessory trays, before concluding that the item is absent.
If tracking says “delivered” but another package is still in transit, wait for that package rather than reporting the wrong line item. For a package marked delivered with no corresponding console, record that distinction in your claim.
Apply the US delivery guidance when it fits your purchase
For PlayStation Direct orders in the United States, Sony’s delivery guidance says to check delivery instructions, household members and neighbors when a package is marked delivered, then wait 48 business hours after the tracking update. This waiting period addresses a parcel that may be delayed or temporarily mis-scanned; it does not require you to discard an empty box or give up your claim. If the product box is demonstrably empty, begin preserving evidence immediately and contact support after checking the shipment details.
Contact the seller named on your receipt
The contractual seller controls the first investigation and the replacement or refund decision. A purchase made through direct.playstation.com should be handled through PlayStation Support. A purchase made through a retailer or marketplace should be opened with that retailer or marketplace seller’s missing-item process, even if the carrier delivered the parcel.
PlayStation Direct
- Sign in and open My Orders.
- Verify the order number, shipment number and missing line item.
- Contact PlayStation Support and provide the order number, delivery date and a concise description of the empty or incomplete box.
- Ask for either a replacement or a full refund, and request a written case number.
Sony’s US support wording is: “If you’re still missing an item, please contact PlayStation Support for additional assistance. Please have your order number ready.” Have the photographs and saved tracking records ready to attach.
Retailer or marketplace purchase
Use the seller identified on the receipt, not a different seller that happens to carry the same console. Follow the seller’s missing-item or “item not received as described” workflow, then upload the same evidence. If the marketplace separates platform support from the individual seller, open the platform case as well as messaging the seller so the case has a formal timestamp.
Send a factual, complete claim
Write the claim so an investigator can identify the order, the package and the missing line item without guessing. A useful statement is:
Order [number] was delivered on [date]. The outer carton contained an empty or incomplete PlayStation product box. I retained the carton, product box, labels, seals and packing material and attached photographs of the packaging, contents and any damage. The missing line item is [item and quantity]. Please investigate and provide a replacement or full refund. Please confirm the case number and next steps in writing.
Attach the order confirmation, tracking page, delivery photograph, photographs of every side of both boxes, and any available package-weight information. State whether the outer carton was sealed, opened, crushed, retaped or otherwise damaged when you received it. If you opened the parcel before noticing the problem, say so plainly; that fact does not by itself establish who removed the item.
Choose between a replacement and a refund
Tell the seller which outcome you prefer, but understand the practical trade-offs before agreeing to one.
| Remedy | When it makes sense | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement | You still want the same model and the seller confirms stock. | It may be faster than recovering money and reordering, but shipment timing depends on available inventory. Ask whether the replacement keeps the original price and whether a new tracking number will be issued. |
| Full refund | You cannot wait, the model is unavailable, or you no longer want another shipment. | Ask when the refund will be initiated and how long the payment method normally takes to show it. Do not assume a refund is complete until the credit appears on your statement or account. |
| Payment dispute | The seller has denied or ignored a truthful, documented non-delivery claim. | This shifts the evidence review to the card issuer or payment provider and can affect the seller account relationship. Use it only after giving the seller a reasonable, documented opportunity to fix the problem. |
If the console is scarce or the original price was part of a promotion, ask the seller in writing whether a replacement will be fulfilled at the original order price. A new purchase is a separate transaction; buying another console does not replace your right to seek a refund for the empty shipment.
If the seller rejects or closes the claim
- Request the decision and evidence in writing. Ask what record supports the conclusion that the console was packed and delivered, and ask for the review or appeal route.
- Reply with the unchanged factual record. Reattach the photographs, tracking history, order details and delivery date. Explain that a parcel scan proves delivery of a parcel, not that the ordered console was inside it.
- Request supervisor review. Use the case number and ask for a new review by the seller’s escalation team.
- Preserve the complete trail. Keep emails, chat transcripts, case numbers, photographs, shipping records and notes of calls. Export chats if the platform allows it.
Do not edit photographs, discard packaging or make a stronger accusation than the evidence supports. The seller’s packing record, recorded package weight and carrier scans may be relevant to the investigation, so ask that those records be retained.

Credit-card billing-error process
For a US purchase paid by credit card, the Federal Trade Commission says a charge for merchandise not delivered as agreed can be disputed as a billing error. Written notice generally must reach the card issuer within 60 days of the first statement showing the error. Follow the issuer’s address and documentation requirements; a telephone complaint alone may not preserve the billing-error deadline. Include the order, seller response, photographs and a concise explanation that the ordered console was not delivered inside the parcel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe FTC also says a seller must ship within the promised time, or within 30 days when no shipping time was promised. If the seller does not ship, it must provide a full refund. An empty product box is evidence that the ordered merchandise was not delivered as agreed, but the issuer will still evaluate the records.
Debit cards and other payment methods
Debit-card protections and deadlines differ from the federal credit-card billing-error rules. Ask your bank for its non-delivery or merchandise-dispute procedure and its filing deadline. Keep the dispute truthful: describe an empty or incomplete shipment, not an unauthorized transaction, unless the charge genuinely was unauthorized.
Account consequences
PlayStation’s account guidance warns that an unjustified chargeback can lead to account or console restrictions while it investigates. That warning does not prevent a legitimate dispute; it means the description and evidence must accurately match what happened. Contact the seller first, retain the case record and provide the same documentation to the payment provider.
Government and regional help
If a US seller and payment provider do not resolve the complaint, USAGov directs consumers to their state consumer-protection office and to the FTC for scams or suspicious communications. Outside the United States, use the consumer authority for your country or region. The available remedies, reporting deadlines and chargeback rules depend on where you bought the console and which payment method you used.

Deadlines vary by PlayStation region and seller
PlayStation’s UK page states that a missing-package report must be made within 30 days of the carrier delivery date to be eligible for investigation. That is an operational PlayStation UK rule, not a universal consumer-law deadline and not a rule for every retailer. Report the empty box as soon as possible even where no published deadline exists. Your retailer, marketplace, carrier and local law may impose different notification windows.
| Situation | Published period | What it governs |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Direct US delivery guidance | 48 business hours after a “delivered” tracking update | Checking for a late or mis-scanned parcel before seeking missing-item assistance. |
| PlayStation UK missing-package investigation | 30 days from the carrier delivery date | Eligibility to report a missing package under that PlayStation UK operational process. |
| US credit-card billing error | Generally 60 days from the first statement showing the error | When written notice should reach the card issuer for a merchandise-not-delivered dispute. |
These periods are separate. Waiting 48 business hours does not extend a 30-day UK reporting window, and a seller’s internal deadline does not automatically replace the card issuer’s written-notice requirement.
Common mistakes that weaken an empty-box claim
- Discarding the packaging: The carton, seals, inserts and labels are evidence of how the shipment arrived.
- Reporting the wrong item: Split shipments can make a delivered accessory look like a missing console. Match the line item and tracking number first.
- Relying only on a delivery scan: A scan establishes that a parcel was delivered, not what was inside it.
- Making an unsupported accusation: State the condition and contents you observed; let the seller and carrier examine their records.
- Opening a payment dispute too early: Give the seller a documented opportunity to replace or refund, then meet your payment provider’s notice rules if escalation is necessary.
- Buying a second console and abandoning the first claim: A replacement purchase does not resolve the original non-delivery or automatically trigger a refund.
What a successful resolution should confirm
Before closing the case, obtain written confirmation of the remedy: the replacement model and quantity with its new tracking number, or the refund amount and initiation date. Keep the case number until the replacement is delivered and inspected or the refund has posted. When a replacement arrives, photograph the sealed parcel before opening it and verify the console serial information and included accessories against the order.
