What to Do if Your Pokémon Cards or Deck Aren’t Tournament Legal

If a card or deck fails a legality check, stop before round one: confirm the event format and date, verify each card’s regulation mark and current text, replace damaged or identifiable cards and mismatched sleeves, remove any unofficial proxies, and ask the organizer or head judge to inspect borderline cards. A card can be old yet legal, while a newer card can be rejected because of damage, alteration, language restrictions, or a marked sleeve.

Start with the event, format and date

“Tournament legal” is not one permanent status. Legality depends on the event’s format, the date on which you play, the tournament tier and, for language questions, the rating zone. A card that is legal in one event can be illegal in another without the card itself changing.

Identify the format

For Standard, begin with the regulation mark in the bottom-left corner. Play! Pokémon explains that Standard legality is based on “a letter found on the bottom-left corner of all cards starting in 2020.” Check every card, including basic cards and cards that look familiar from older sets, against the current official legality information for the event.

Do not assume that the set symbol, release year or the fact that a card was once legal is enough. Rotation changes the pool, and an event announcement may use a different format. If the organizer has published a format name, permitted sets or a cutoff date, use those details rather than a general online list.

Older or unmarked cards may still be usable

An older or unmarked printing can remain legal when the same card has a current-regulation-mark reprint. In that situation, the reprint establishes current legality for the card name and effect; you may be able to use the older physical copy if it is otherwise acceptable under the event rules. The current card text, including any official errata, still governs play.

Compare the exact card name and effect, not just artwork. If an erratum changed wording, play according to the corrected text even when your physical card shows the earlier wording. When a card’s identity, wording or reprint status is uncertain, put it aside and have the organizer or head judge confirm it before the first round.

Run a card-by-card legality check

Use this sequence before submitting a deck list or arriving at deck check. It separates a rules problem from a physical-card problem, which require different fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the event date, format and tournament tier. Keep the event announcement or registration information available.
  2. Inspect the bottom-left corner of each card. Record the regulation mark where one is present, and flag older or unmarked cards for a reprint check.
  3. Verify the card against the current official legality and errata resources. Confirm that the card name and effect match a currently legal version for that format.
  4. Check language eligibility. A card can be mechanically legal but not acceptable in the event’s rating zone or tier.
  5. Examine the card and its sleeve together. Look for bends, scratches, tears, discoloration, altered surfaces and any sleeve difference that could identify the card from the back.
  6. Correct the deck list. The list must describe the cards you are actually presenting after replacements or removals.
  7. Ask for an inspection. Show any borderline card to the organizer or head judge before round one, not after an opponent notices it.

Physical damage can make a legal card illegal to use

The Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook, section 5.2.1, defines a marked card as one where “some aspect of the card makes it possible to identify it without seeing its face, including scratches, tears, discoloration, bends, etc.” The relevant question is not whether the damage was accidental or whether you can personally ignore it. The question is whether the card can be distinguished while the deck is face down.

Inspect the card in realistic conditions

  • Hold the deck with backs facing you and look for a corner, edge, color or surface that stands out.
  • Flexing, flattening or cleaning a card to hide a bend can worsen the damage and may not remove the identifying feature.
  • Check both the card and its sleeve under the venue’s likely lighting; glare and shadows can reveal differences that are not obvious at home.
  • Inspect replacement cards as well. A substitute that is legal by mark can still fail because of wear or a different back pattern.

Post-production alterations are also a problem

Writing on, painting or otherwise changing a card can make it ineligible even if the alteration was intended to improve readability. The handbook states: “Examples of alterations include autographs, artwork, or other such amendments to the surface of the card, not including any official stamps applied by TPCi.” An autograph, custom artwork or similar change is therefore not a safe way to personalize a tournament card.

Official stamps excluded by that rule are different from a player-applied mark. Do not treat a store stamp, a personal signature or a repair as equivalent to an official stamp. If the surface has been altered, use an unaltered replacement or ask the head judge for a ruling.

Make sleeves part of the legality check

Sleeves can create a marked-card issue even when every card is pristine. The handbook’s sleeve requirements include matching color or design, condition, size and texture; solid-color edges; and no excessive reflectivity. Pokémon Organized Play strongly recommends sleeves with an opaque back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a compliant deck of sleeves looks like

  • Every sleeve has the same back design and color.
  • Edges, corners and surface texture are consistent throughout the deck.
  • The backs are opaque enough that card faces, print or color cannot be seen through them.
  • The finish is not excessively reflective, so a player cannot gain information from glare.
  • Sleeves are clean enough to shuffle normally and do not have tears, bends or adhesive damage.

Fix inconsistent or worn sleeves

Replace questionable sleeves with one matching, opaque, non-reflective sleeve type for the entire deck. Do not replace only the one sleeve that looks different if the rest of the set has accumulated different wear; a deck with mixed conditions can still be identifiable. Keep a complete spare set in the same design for emergencies, but do not mix old and new sleeves without checking whether the backs and texture match.

Inner sleeves and oversleeves are allowed only when the resulting deck still satisfies the rules and can be shuffled normally. Extra layers do not excuse a sleeve that is reflective, translucent, damaged or visibly different. If the layered deck becomes too tight to shuffle or produces protruding corners, remove the problematic layer and present a uniform configuration.

Do not use an unofficial proxy at an official tournament

Photocopies, printouts and handmade substitutes are not a workaround for a missing, damaged or expensive card. The Asia-region official floor rules state: “Fake or proxy cards (photocopies, printouts or handmade cards used in place of an actualcard) are not allowed in any tournament.” The published wording includes “actualcard” as one word.

That rule gives a clear practical answer: do not bring a home-made substitute to official play. A proxy used for casual testing or deck-building is a separate matter from presenting a deck at a sanctioned event. Before traveling, obtain a genuine, tournament-eligible replacement or ask the organizer what procedure applies to an event-specific exception.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a card is damaged during the event

  1. Stop handling the damaged card and call a judge immediately.
  2. Explain when and how the damage occurred; do not quietly swap the card between games.
  3. Follow the judge’s replacement procedure. The judge may inspect the damage and determine whether a replacement is permitted.
  4. Update the deck list or record the approved replacement exactly as instructed.

A judge’s authorization during an event is not permission to prepare a deck with unofficial cards beforehand. The ruling and any replacement must come from the event’s officials.

Check the language rules for your rating zone

Language eligibility changes with event tier and location. At Premier Events, legal languages are limited by the applicable rating zone. A card printed in a language that is accepted elsewhere may therefore be rejected at a Premier Event in your zone.

At other tournaments and at League sessions, the organizer or League staff decide which languages are acceptable. Ask before registering if you plan to use cards printed outside the local language set. Bring the event’s answer to deck check, especially when your deck contains multiple languages or an older printing.

Language approval does not override the other checks. A permitted-language card can still be illegal because of rotation, an erratum, damage, an alteration or a sleeve that marks it.

Prepare your deck list and deck check

Deck-check problems often come from a mismatch between the list and the cards, not from a single forbidden card. After making any change, compare the list line by line with the physical deck. Confirm card names, quantities and the exact version or language information your event requests.

Before leaving for the venue

  • Separate cards that need a reprint or errata verification.
  • Remove every damaged or altered card from the tournament deck.
  • Resleeve the complete deck, not just visibly bad cards.
  • Pack genuine replacements and unused matching sleeves.
  • Bring the final deck list and note any ruling already given by the organizer.

At registration and before round one

Tell staff about a questionable card rather than waiting for a random deck check. Present the card, its sleeve and the relevant deck-list entry together. If staff require a change, make it before play begins and submit a corrected list. The head judge or organizer is the final practical checkpoint for an individual card or deck; an internet database, retailer or fellow player cannot replace that ruling for your event.

Fast answers to common legality problems

“My card has no regulation mark. Is it automatically illegal?”

No. In Standard, an older or unmarked copy can remain legal when the same card has a current regulation-mark reprint. Verify the reprint and use the current errata text.

“The card is legal, but the sleeve is different. Can I keep it?”

Not if the difference lets anyone identify it from the back. Replace sleeves so the entire deck matches in color or design, condition, size and texture, with an opaque, non-reflective back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Can I use a Japanese card at my local event?”

It depends on the rating zone and event tier. Premier Events follow rating-zone language rules; other tournaments and League sessions leave the decision to the organizer or League staff. Ask before play.

“Can I print a card until I find a real one?”

Do not use a photocopy, printout or handmade proxy in an official tournament. If a genuine card is damaged during the event, call a judge and follow the approved replacement procedure.
