When a game freezes your PC, first wait briefly to see whether it recovers, then press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and end the game if Windows still responds. Restart the computer before deeper troubleshooting. Do not hold the power button unless Windows is completely unresponsive, because a forced shutdown can lose unsaved work. After the immediate recovery, determine whether one game or the whole system is failing, then work through reversible software checks before testing cooling, storage, memory, drivers or power.

- Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If Task Manager appears, select the game on the Processes list and choose End task. This closes the nonresponsive process without cutting power to the computer.
- Restart Windows. Once the game is closed, restart normally. Steam’s general troubleshooting sequence is intended to be followed after a fresh restart, so do not skip this step before changing drivers or reinstalling files.
- Use a forced shutdown only as a last resort. If Windows does not respond to Task Manager, keyboard shortcuts or the power menu, hold the physical power button until the computer turns off. How do I fix a game that keeps freezing with software checks?
Complete these checks in order. They begin with actions that preserve saves and settings, then move toward more disruptive repairs.
Restart, then install Windows and driver updates
After the fresh restart, open Windows Update and install pending updates. Check for a current graphics-processing-unit (GPU) driver and other device-driver updates, particularly if the freezing began after a Windows or game update. Restart again when Windows or the driver installer requests it. If a new driver introduced the problem, note its version so you can compare behavior after a rollback or a later release.
Verify the game’s files in Steam

Check requirements and reduce the video workload
Compare the computer with the game’s minimum requirements, including the operating-system edition, processor, memory, graphics hardware and available storage. If the system is marginal, lower resolution, texture quality, shadows, effects and other demanding settings, and cap the frame rate if the game provides that option. Riot Games recommends lowering video settings as a crash-mitigation step. How can I protect saves before reinstalling or resetting anything?
Back up saves and configuration files before a reinstall, reset or drive move. Depending on the title, saves may be stored in the game’s folder, your user profile, a Documents subfolder or a cloud-synchronization service. Confirm that a recent save has uploaded or copy the local save and configuration folders to another location before deleting files.
Do not remove a mod manager’s profile or a game’s settings folder merely because verification failed. First make a copy, then test with the original files restored if the change does not help. What should I check when several games or Windows freeze?
System-wide freezes justify hardware and operating-system diagnosis rather than repeated game reinstalls. Change one variable at a time and record the result.
Cooling and ventilation
Steam notes that overheating is especially plausible when stuttering or performance problems appear before the freeze. Shut the computer down, clear dust from vents and fans using the manufacturer’s safe procedure, and ensure that the case has unobstructed airflow. Review Windows logs after the next freeze
Microsoft recommends reviewing Application and System logs and generating diagnostics after a Windows freeze. Open Event Viewer, inspect entries at the time of the failure, and note recurring display-driver resets, disk errors, service failures or unexpected shutdowns.
