To print and paint a Minecraft figure successfully, start with a legitimately licensed model, match its file and dimensions to your printer, then treat finishing as a separate process: remove supports, sand and prime the surface, apply plastic-compatible acrylic paint in thin coats, and protect it with the sheen you want. Minecraft Education documents an export-and-print workflow, while model libraries such as MC-Craft provide Minecraft blocks, items and mobs in STL, 3MF and OBJ formats with adjustable size and optional bases.
The most reliable results come from compatibility checks rather than a single “best” setting. Your printer’s filament diameter, nozzle and bed setup, slicer profile, model scale, support strategy, primer, paint and varnish all affect the finished figure. The workflow below explains what to check, what each stage accomplishes and how to recover when a print or paint job goes wrong.

How do I choose a Minecraft model I can legally print?
Choose an official educational export or a file whose creator clearly grants permission for personal printing. A printable file is the starting point, and a visually appealing screenshot is not enough: you need a downloadable 3D format your slicer can read and a license that covers your intended use.
Use a format your slicer understands
| Format | Best use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| STL | Standard single-material FDM printing | Geometry only; color assignments are not retained. |
| 3MF | Projects that may carry scene, material or color information | Confirm that your slicer imports the embedded settings as intended. |
| OBJ | Models that may be paired with material or texture files | Keep any companion material or texture files with the model. |
Minecraft Education’s 3D Model lesson describes exporting Minecraft models for 3D printing. MC-Craft’s Minecraft 3D Print guide describes downloadable blocks, items and mobs in STL, 3MF and OBJ, with adjustable size and base options. Treat third-party files as a separate licensing decision: read the creator’s terms before selling prints, sharing files or using a character in a public display.

Inspect the geometry before slicing
- Look for a stated scale range and measure the model’s longest dimension against your printer’s build volume.
- Check thin tools, ears, weapons, fingers, antennae and other projections. A part that is only a few nozzle widths thick may need to be enlarged or redesigned.
- Decide whether a flat base is included. A base improves stability, but it also changes the footprint and may require a different orientation.
- Preview overhangs in the slicer. A blocky silhouette can still contain undersides, bridges or isolated details that need support.
Scaling is a trade-off: enlarging a figure makes faces and accessories easier to paint and gives fragile parts more strength, but it increases material use and print time. Shrinking it reduces those costs while making layer lines, support scars and brush control more difficult.
What printer and filament setup should I use?
For a first hobby FDM figure, PLA is a practical starting category, provided the spool and printer profile are compatible. The correct choice is not simply “PLA”; the filament diameter, nozzle, bed, build volume and slicer profile must agree with one another.
| Check | Why it matters | Action before slicing |
|---|---|---|
| Filament diameter | The extruder profile must match the physical filament. | Select the diameter specified by the spool and printer profile. |
| Nozzle | Nozzle size limits how finely small features can be deposited. | Use the installed nozzle’s profile and avoid modeling details too small for it. |
| Bed and adhesion | A detached first layer can ruin an otherwise correct figure. | Use the bed surface and adhesion settings recommended for your material. |
| Build volume | The full model, brim and supports must fit inside the printable area. | Measure the model after scaling, including its base. |
| Slicer profile | Layer height, walls and support behavior control strength and detail. | Start with the manufacturer’s material profile, then preview every layer. |
Orient the most visible faces to minimize support contact on them. Put unavoidable support scars on hidden or easily sanded areas, and leave enough clearance around details for support removal. Save the slicer project with the model so you can reproduce a successful orientation later.
How do I slice and print the figure?
Use this order so geometry, supports and first-layer behavior are checked before material is committed.

- Import and measure. Open the STL, 3MF or OBJ in your slicer, set the intended height or longest dimension, and confirm the base and all accessories fit the build volume.
- Choose orientation. Rotate the model so broad, visible faces are clean and stable. Keep delicate projections supported rather than forcing them to print in midair.
- Assign the material profile. Select the profile matching the installed filament diameter and printer setup. Do not rely on a profile for a different nozzle or material.
- Add supports where preview shows gaps. Inspect islands, undersides and steep overhangs. Excessive support increases cleanup, so place it only where the model needs a platform.
- Preview each layer. Check that walls, eyes, tools and other small features actually appear in the preview and that no section is missing.
- Print and monitor the first layer. Confirm the footprint adheres before leaving the machine unattended. Stop if the base lifts, shifts or is being dragged by the nozzle.
- Let the part cool before removal. A cooled print is generally easier to detach without bending thin features. Remove it using the bed manufacturer’s intended method.
If the figure is larger than your printer, split it at natural joints or use a print service or makerspace. Splitting introduces seams that must be aligned, filled and sanded, so compare that labor with printing a smaller single piece.

What tools and materials are useful after printing?
Finishing works best when each tool has a defined job. Anycubic’s supply list includes surface primer, acrylic model colors, matte varnish, paint brushes, a wet palette, paint handle, masking tape, flush cutter, hand files, craft knife and sandpaper in its guide to finishing 3D prints: How to Sand, Prime and Paint 3D Prints.
| Item | Use | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| Flush cutter | Snips support branches close to the part | Cut supports in stages rather than twisting them from fragile details. |
| Craft knife and hand files | Trim nubs and refine tight edges | Work slowly; a knife removes material faster than sandpaper. |
| Sandpaper | Reduces layer lines and support marks | Use progressively finer grades and avoid rounding intentional block edges. |
| Plastic-compatible primer | Creates a uniform, paintable surface | Follow the product label for substrate, drying and ventilation. |
| Acrylic model paint | Adds colored regions and details | Choose paint labeled for plastic or multisurface use. |
| Fine brushes and wet palette | Control small Minecraft-style color blocks | Use larger brushes for broad faces and fine points for eyes and tools. |
| Varnish or clear coat | Protects the cured paint and sets sheen | Choose matte, satin or gloss according to the display and handling goal. |
How should I remove supports, sand and prime PLA?
Surface preparation controls both the appearance and the durability of the paint. Formlabs explains that FDM parts can need extra sanding to reduce the staircase effect from layer lines and recommends priming before painting in its guide to miniatures and custom figurines: 3D Printing Miniatures and Custom Figurines: A Guide to Bringing Digital Models to Life.
- Separate supports. Snip large branches with flush cutters, then remove the remaining contact points. Do not lever a support against a thin sword, tool or corner.
- Trim and file. Use a craft knife or hand file on obvious nubs and seams. Keep the blade moving away from your fingers and from edges you want to preserve.
- Sand visible defects. Sand layer lines and scars on broad faces first, then work around corners and recessed details. Stop when the surface is even enough for your chosen finish; aggressive sanding can erase pixel-like geometry.
- Clean the dust. Remove sanding residue before priming. Dust trapped in primer becomes permanent texture.
- Prime in light coverage. Apply a primer labeled for plastic or the print material. Several light passes preserve detail better than one heavy coat.
Primer is not a substitute for all sanding: it can unify the surface and reveal remaining flaws, but thick primer can soften sharp block edges and fill tiny eyes or tool details. Let the primer dry according to its label before handling the figure.

What paint works best on a 3D-printed Minecraft figure?
Plastic-compatible acrylic model paint is a versatile hand-painting choice. It is easy to control on small geometric areas, and it can be layered from broad color blocks to tiny facial or equipment details. Formlabs recommends plastic-compatible primer and paint, while Anycubic includes acrylic model colors in its finishing supply list.

- Plan the color map. Identify the largest regions first—skin, clothing, armor, hair, tools and base—so later colors do not require awkward masking.
- Thin the paint as the label allows. Aim for an even coat that flows from the brush without flooding panel lines. Test on a hidden area or spare print.
- Block in broad faces. Use a larger brush for flat regions and keep paint out of neighboring color zones. Several thin coats usually cover more evenly than one thick coat.
- Build contrast. After the base colors dry, add darker recesses or lighter planes where the block design needs separation. Keep the geometry readable rather than obscuring it with heavy paint.
- Paint small details last. Switch to a fine brush for eyes, buttons, pixel markings, tool handles and other accents. Rest your painting hand on a handle or support to reduce tremor.
- Allow drying between coats. Rushing can lift an earlier layer, create brush ridges or mix colors at their borders.
A wet palette can slow drying on the palette and make repeated colors easier to match, but the figure itself still needs drying time between coats. Masking tape is useful for a clean base or large straight color boundary only after the underlying paint has cured enough to resist lifting.
Should I use matte, satin or gloss varnish?
Varnish changes both appearance and handling. Apply it only after the paint has dried and cured as directed by the paint and varnish labels.
| Finish | Visual effect | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Matte | Little reflected light; minimizes glare | Display figures intended to look like painted miniatures or pixel art. |
| Satin | Moderate reflection between matte and gloss | Figures that need some visual richness without strong highlights. |
| Gloss | Strong reflection and a slick appearance | Selective effects such as polished surfaces, visors or water-like accents. |
Formlabs advises applying clear coat in one or two light layers in its guide to priming and painting 3D-printed parts: How to Prime and Paint 3D Printed Parts. Spray products require ventilation and protective equipment; follow the label’s recoat, curing and storage directions. If you want mixed effects, use a broad matte or satin coat and brush a small gloss area only where the design calls for it.

What if the finished figure has common defects?
Diagnose the stage where the defect began rather than repainting immediately.
- Visible stair-stepping: Sand the affected faces before primer. If detail is already too shallow, print the model larger or accept a deliberately low-resolution look.
- Ragged support scars: Cut supports closer to the contact point, then file and sand. Reorient the model so support touches a less visible face on the next print.
- Paint beads or separates: The surface may be dusty, unprimed or incompatible with the paint. Clean it, use a plastic-compatible primer and apply thinner coats after drying.
- Brush marks and obscured details: Reduce paint load, use a finer brush for small areas and allow each layer to dry before correcting it.
- Varnish turns cloudy or uneven: Stop adding coats, let the layer cure fully and check the product’s compatibility and environmental instructions before attempting another light pass.
- Thin parts break: Increase their scale, change orientation, add a base or redesign the weak connection. Painting cannot restore structural strength that was never printed.
Can I make a Minecraft figure without owning a 3D printer?
Yes. A makerspace or local 3D-printing service can produce the file, after which you perform the same support removal, surface preparation and painting steps. Ask the service what material, nozzle and finishing level it uses, provide the required scale and base dimensions, and request that the file’s license permits the intended use.
When outsourcing, specify whether you want a single-color raw print or a colored workflow. STL normally supplies geometry without color, while 3MF or OBJ may carry color or material information only when the receiving software and accompanying files support it. Have the provider confirm orientation and support placement before printing if the visible face quality matters.
How should I compare two models before committing to one?
Compare the practical variables below rather than choosing solely by character likeness.

| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Printer and filament fit | Does the file fit the build volume, and does your filament diameter, nozzle, bed and slicer profile match? |
| Model suitability | Are fragile parts thick enough, is a stable base included, and can supports avoid prominent faces? |
| Surface quality | How many layer lines and support marks will be visible, and how much sanding can the geometry tolerate? |
| Paint control | Are color regions large enough for your brush, and will primer or paint cover without hiding details? |
| Protection and appearance | Will the figure be handled often, and does matte, satin or gloss suit the intended display? |
| Access route | Is personal printing practical, or would a makerspace or print service reduce equipment and setup demands? |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an STL file include the character’s original Minecraft colors?
STL stores the surface geometry, not a color map. A 3MF or OBJ workflow may retain color or material information when the file includes it and the receiving slicer supports it; otherwise plan to paint the single-color print.
How can I keep square Minecraft edges from becoming rounded during finishing?
Use support placement that avoids exposed corners, remove nubs with a file instead of levering them off, and sand only until the defect is gone. Heavy primer and repeated wet coats can soften edges, so build coverage gradually.
Is a clear coat required if the figure will only sit on a shelf?
No. A cured paint job can remain unvarnished for a low-touch display. Varnish is useful when you want a specific sheen or extra resistance to fingerprints and handling, but it should be applied only after the paint has cured according to its label.
What should I tell a print service before it starts the job?
Provide the licensed file, target height, whether you need a base, the preferred material, and which faces must remain clean. Ask for an orientation and support preview so you can approve likely scars before the print is made.
