Games with multiple playable characters do not follow one shared progression rule. An upgrade might belong to one character, a party, or the wider adventure; a character’s abilities may be fixed or customizable; and the story may depend on who is currently active. To understand a particular game, separate those systems instead of assuming that switching characters also switches progress, skills, or access to missions.
What does progression belong to?
Start by asking what receives progress. A game may develop individual characters while tracking story access or adventure milestones separately. Those are different layers: a character can become stronger without unlocking a new chapter, and an account or adventure can reach a new point without making every playable character identical.

It might mean characters share a level, that party members receive the same rewards, that new content becomes available to everyone, or simply that the player can carry one save through a changing party. None of those meanings follows automatically from the fact that a game has several playable characters. Check the game’s own rules for levels, rewards, and party membership before deciding what transfers.
Character progress and adventure access are not interchangeable
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is a clear example of individual character identity within one adventure. Square Enix describes eight travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and skills, and says players can develop their jobs and skills. The game’s structure therefore invites two questions at once: what can this traveler learn, and what does this traveler bring to the broader journey?

Genshin Impact illustrates a different distinction, but its dated notices should not be treated as a current leveling guide. Official notices from particular versions pair Adventure Rank requirements with character talent materials. That is enough to show why adventure access and a character’s development should be read as separate systems; it does not establish October 2026 requirements, current thresholds, or a universal rule for how characters advance.
Do characters on the bench catch up automatically?
There is no cross-game answer. The documented examples do not establish a general rule that inactive characters gain levels or experience, so do not assume that a benched character will match the active one. Look for that game’s own explanation of experience, rewards, and party members before making a decision based on who is in the current lineup.
Are character abilities fixed, or can you customize them?
Multiple playable characters can have distinct identities while still allowing build choices. The useful distinction is between a character’s signature actions or narrative role and the parts of their kit the player is permitted to change.
Distinctive abilities make party choice matter
In OCTOPATH TRAVELER II, Square Enix identifies Path Actions for the travelers and describes their individual skills and developable jobs. Those features make character selection more than a cosmetic swap: the traveler you choose can affect which actions are available and how you choose to develop that character. The publisher’s phrase “Every path is yours to take” captures its stated emphasis on player choice, but it should not be read as a promise that every character can perform every action.
When a game gives characters different abilities, consider the practical question behind a choice: does this character open an option that another character lacks? That option could matter in a fight, in exploration, or in an interaction. The specific answer depends on the game’s rules; the existence of a roster alone does not tell you whether abilities overlap, whether they can be reassigned, or whether a character is required for a particular task.

A build change is not necessarily a character rewrite
Baldur’s Gate 3 shows how customization can coexist with a stable story identity. Larian Studios says a player can experience an Origin character’s perspective or recruit that character, and its FAQ explains that classes can be changed without changing the underlying story identity. The FAQ cautions: “Bear in mind that some characters’ class is closely intertwined with their story, and respeccing them will not change this.”

A class or skill setup describes how a character plays; a character’s identity describes who they are in the story. A respec can address the first without erasing the second. It does not follow that every game permits respecs, that every ability can be changed, or that changing a build alters the story’s treatment of a character.
When can you switch characters?
Switching rules are game-specific: some games let you change party members only at a designated point, while others make the active character part of the story’s mission logic. The practical question is not just “Can I switch?” but “Where, when, and what changes when I do?”
Switching at a party-management point
Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 FAQ says companions can be exchanged at camp and that up to three companions can accompany the player. That describes a particular party-management arrangement, not a general rule for role-playing games. If you want to bring someone else, the relevant place to check is the game’s companion or party-management system; do not assume that character changes are available at every moment.
It is also important to distinguish playing a character from recruiting them. Larian describes both possibilities for Origin characters: a player can experience an Origin’s perspective or recruit that character. Those are different ways of engaging with the same character, and they should not be collapsed into one assumption about how every party member is controlled.

Switching because the mission requires someone else
Grand Theft Auto V provides a story-driven contrast. Rockstar Games Customer Support’s May 1, 2024 update says that some Story Mode missions are available only while playing particular characters and advises players who cannot find missions to try the three protagonists. In that situation, changing the active character can be a way to reveal available content rather than a response to lost progress.
That is one documented possibility, not a diagnosis for every stalled save. Rockstar’s support article gives several possible reasons a mission may not appear. If switching protagonists does not help, the missing mission may have another explanation; the support guidance does not establish that character choice is always the cause.
How can the story depend on who you play?
Multi-character storytelling can present parallel personal journeys, let the player experience a character’s perspective, or make particular missions available only to a designated protagonist. These structures change what “progressing the story” means: the player may be advancing one character’s thread, choosing whose perspective to inhabit, or meeting a character-specific condition.
Parallel journeys and personal identity
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II’s eight travelers are introduced with individual origins and motivations. That framing makes the roster itself part of the story design: characters are not merely interchangeable versions of one protagonist. Their different skills and paths also give players a reason to think about whose journey they are following at a given moment.
However, a description of individual journeys does not prove that every personal quest can be completed in any order. The order, prerequisites, and ways character stories intersect must be checked in the game itself. Treat “multiple stories” as a description of the cast’s narrative setup, not as a guarantee of unrestricted sequencing.

Perspective and presence are different forms of access
Baldur’s Gate 3 distinguishes a playable Origin perspective from recruiting an Origin character into the party. That distinction illustrates two separate ways a character can matter to the narrative: the player can take on that character’s perspective, or the character can be present as a companion while another perspective leads.
GTA V’s character-specific missions show a more direct form of gating: the game may require the player to control a particular protagonist for some Story Mode missions. When a task is unavailable, ask whether the current character is the intended one before concluding that the save has lost progress. This check is relevant to the documented GTA V case, not a universal troubleshooting rule for every game.
How should you troubleshoot a missing mission or an underpowered character?
Separate the symptom before changing anything. A mission that is absent, a character that seems weaker, and an ability that is unavailable can each point to different systems.
- If a mission is missing: check whether the game associates it with a particular playable character. For GTA V Story Mode, Rockstar specifically recommends trying the three protagonists when missions do not appear.
- If a character seems underdeveloped: find the game’s rules for individual experience, skill points, jobs, or talents. Do not infer that a character will catch up simply because they are part of the same roster.
- If an ability is unavailable: check whether it belongs to a particular character, depends on that character’s build, or requires a progression unlock. A different active character may offer different actions.
- If you are considering a respec: check what the game allows you to change and whether the change affects only mechanics. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a documented example of class changes that do not rewrite a character’s story identity.
- If switching is not available: look for the game’s party-management location or switching conditions. The camp exchange described for Baldur’s Gate 3 should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
These checks are meant to identify which system is involved, not to imply that one explanation fits every game. In particular, Rockstar’s support guidance lists more than one possible reason for an absent mission; character choice is only one route to check.

- Who receives the upgrade? Determine whether experience, talents, jobs, or other development belongs to a specific character, a party, or a wider adventure system.
- What does the character uniquely contribute? Identify signature actions and any build choices that change how the character plays.
- Where can you change the lineup? Find the game’s stated switching point or conditions before relying on a swap to solve a problem.
- Does the current character affect story access? Check whether a mission, interaction, or viewpoint is tied to a particular protagonist.
- What remains unchanged after customization? Separate mechanical choices from narrative identity instead of assuming a build change rewrites the character.
The answers will vary by game. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II foregrounds travelers with separate identities and developable jobs and skills; Baldur’s Gate 3 distinguishes class customization from character identity and describes companion changes at camp; GTA V documents missions available only as particular protagonists. Together, those examples show why the safest approach is to check each system on its own terms rather than treating “multiple characters” as one standardized design.
