Steam currently gives Q2 2027 as the planned release window, without specifying a day. That is the store’s current plan, not a promise that the game will launch during that quarter. PC Gamer reported on October 10, 2026, that the Steam page had appeared and that game director Chris Roberts had announced in August that the game was delayed out of 2026. The live listing is the more direct source for the current window; neither establishes a guaranteed release date.
You can wishlist the listing to receive a Steam notification, but there is no current Steam price to evaluate against older pledge prices or unofficial estimates. Wait for the live store page to show a price and purchase option before deciding what the Steam version will cost.

For a prospective buyer, “not yet available” has a practical meaning: there is no Steam transaction to complete today, no listed Steam edition to choose, and no current Steam price to compare with any other offer. A wishlist is only a way to follow the listing and receive a notification; it does not reserve a copy, establish a price, or guarantee that the planned window will hold.
The Q2 2027 entry also does not narrow the launch to a particular date. It is a quarter-long window, and the listing does not provide a day, preorder period, or schedule for when pricing will appear. The August 2026 delay out of 2026, reported by PC Gamer on October 10, is a reminder to treat release information as changeable. What kind of game is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is a single-player, story-driven campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, not the Star Citizen online game. Steam describes a cinematic space adventure combining ship combat, on-foot combat, exploration, and a story alongside a crew. Cloud Imperium Games also describes it as a story-driven single-player game set in that universe, in its press materials.
That distinction matters when considering a Steam purchase: the listing identifies the game as single-player. It does not present Squadron 42 as an online multiplayer substitute or as a bundle that includes Star Citizen.
In other words, the store listing is for the campaign itself. The fact that it is set in the Star Citizen universe does not, by itself, mean a Steam purchase includes the separate online game, a ship, or another package. The reviewed listing describes the game as single-player and does not identify a Star Citizen bundle. If you want both products or expect a particular package of extras, wait for the purchase page to state exactly what is included.
What does the Steam listing include?
The listing names Cloud Imperium Games Ltd and Cloud Imperium Games Texas LLC as developers, and Roberts Space Industries entities as publishers. It marks the game as single-player and lists Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, HDR, Family Sharing, and full controller support. Steam Deck compatibility is marked unknown, and there are no user reviews yet. These are listing details, not a guarantee that every feature will work a particular way at launch; check the page again when the game becomes available.
Those labels can help you identify what Steam currently advertises, but they should not be treated as a substitute for the full launch information. For example, the listing’s controller-support label is not a description of every supported controller or control option, and the unknown Steam Deck status does not answer whether the game will run well on a particular handheld. Likewise, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing are listed features, but the current page does not provide additional conditions or explain how they will apply to every account and ownership situation.

French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Latin America) are listed for interface and subtitles; the listing does not show full-audio support for those languages. Language availability can change, so confirm the selections on the live listing before buying.

This distinction is useful if spoken dialogue matters to you. The current Steam language table marks English as the only language with full audio, while the other nine listed options have interface and subtitle support marked. It does not show full audio for them. Do not infer that an interface or subtitle checkmark means dubbed dialogue is included, and revisit the store’s language table near release in case CIG updates it.
Will your PC meet the listed requirements?
Steam’s current minimums are the most directly relevant published specifications for someone planning to buy through Steam. RSI’s separate general requirements page, updated December 17, 2025, gives different graphics-memory and operating-system details. The two lists are not interchangeable: do not rely on the older general page alone to determine whether your computer will meet the final Steam requirements.

The figures in the Steam column come from the Steam listing; the RSI column comes from RSI’s Game and Launcher Requirements. In particular, Steam lists Windows 11 and 8 GB of VRAM, while RSI’s older general guidance allows Windows 10 or 11 and names 4 GB of graphics memory. A PC that clears the older graphics figure may still fall short of Steam’s current minimum. Recheck the Steam specifications closer to release, since the final requirements may change.
For a basic compatibility check, compare each component against the Steam column rather than checking only the processor or the amount of system RAM. Steam’s minimum list includes the operating system, a quad-core CPU family, 16 GB RAM, graphics memory, DirectX compatibility, broadband internet, and available storage. Meeting one item does not establish that the whole computer meets the minimum. The listing does not yet give detailed recommended specifications, so it cannot tell buyers what hardware would provide more headroom than the stated minimum.
Pay particular attention to the graphics-memory discrepancy. Steam currently asks for an 8 GB VRAM graphics card, whereas RSI’s older general page says 4 GB of graphics memory for CIG games including Squadron 42. The lower number is not a safe substitute for the Steam figure when assessing a Steam copy. If your card has less than 8 GB, the available pages do not establish that it will meet Steam’s current minimum; if you are near any listed threshold, check again closer to release because requirements may be revised.
The operating-system difference also matters. Steam currently lists Windows 11, while RSI’s general guidance includes Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 and says Linux and macOS are not currently supported. For someone planning to use Steam, do not assume that the broader older RSI statement overrides the Windows 11 requirement on the Steam listing. The sources do not provide a final explanation for the discrepancy, so the prudent choice is to use the current store page and recheck it before buying.
Storage is another item to plan rather than guess at. Steam lists 150 GB of available storage. RSI’s general page calls for a 150+ GB SSD, and recommends an NTFS-formatted drive with additional room for the launcher and pagefile. Those statements are not the same: Steam says 150 GB available, while RSI’s guidance adds SSD and setup details. Since the latter is general CIG guidance and not confirmed as the final Steam installation setup, leave room for updated instructions instead of treating either number as a guarantee of the eventual install footprint.
Steam lists broadband internet as a minimum. RSI’s general requirements page does not state broadband as a minimum in its listed specifications, and its launcher guidance includes specified network ports. Those port details should not be assumed to be final Steam requirements. The available information does not set a connection speed or explain whether a particular home network configuration will work, so check the current install and support guidance if you encounter a network issue after release.
Storage and launcher caveats
RSI’s general guidance recommends an NTFS-formatted drive and says to allow additional space for the launcher and pagefile. It also specifies network ports in its launcher guidance. Those details relate to RSI’s broader CIG setup; they are not confirmed here as final requirements for a Steam installation. For now, plan around Steam’s stated 150 GB minimum, and check updated installation instructions when the Steam version is ready.

There is no detailed Steam recommended tier to use as an alternative benchmark, and the listing’s stated minimums may change before the release window. If you are deciding whether to upgrade a PC solely for this game, wait for the final store specifications and any updated RSI instructions. The current figures are enough to flag potential issues—especially the 8 GB VRAM and Windows 11 entries—but not enough to guarantee performance on a specific configuration.

Steam says a Roberts Space Industries account is required and supports linking it to Steam. The store listing does not, however, explain how existing pledge entitlements will work with a Steam copy.
RSI says that, after development is complete, testing is done, and the game is released, accounts that own a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it. Its starter checklist, updated April 16, 2026, also mentions a Squadron 42 standalone pledge as an exception to other packages that generally include a ship, the game, and additional items. That information describes RSI pledge ownership; it does not establish a current price or say that a pledge includes a Steam copy.
Neither the reviewed Steam listing nor RSI’s support information specifies whether existing pledge owners will receive Steam keys, can choose Steam rather than the RSI launcher, or will have their pledge entitlement recognized through Steam. They also do not establish whether buying on Steam creates an RSI pledge. If you already own a pledge or plan to purchase through a particular store, wait for CIG or RSI to publish a clear cross-store policy before assuming the versions or entitlements are interchangeable.
There are two separate pieces of information here, and they should not be conflated. RSI describes what happens to accounts that own a pledge containing Squadron 42: after development, testing, and release, those accounts will be able to download and play the game. Steam, meanwhile, says an RSI account is required for its listing and supports linking. Neither statement answers whether the RSI pledge entitlement will unlock the Steam version or whether Steam owners can use the RSI download route.

The account requirement is also a purchase consideration for people who prefer to keep games entirely within Steam. The listing says an RSI account is required, so a buyer should expect to need that account and to follow the listed linking process. It does not explain account creation steps, whether every Steam owner must link before launch, or what happens if a buyer already has multiple RSI accounts. Check the official instructions when they are published rather than guessing how account matching will work.
What to check before spending money
- Confirm the game is actually available. Check the live Steam listing for a purchase option, posted price, and current release information. A wishlist entry is not a purchase.
- Compare the final requirements with your PC. Pay particular attention to Windows version, graphics memory, and storage. The current Steam and RSI general figures differ, so use the updated Steam requirements for a Steam purchase rather than assuming the older RSI minimums settle compatibility.
- Resolve account and entitlement questions if you have a pledge. Link your RSI account as instructed by the listing, but do not assume an existing pledge provides a Steam key or that a Steam purchase counts as an RSI pledge. Look for an explicit policy from CIG or RSI.
- Recheck features that matter to you. Confirm the listed language, controller, Family Sharing, Steam Cloud, HDR, and Steam Deck details on the store page when purchase is possible. Some can change, and Steam Deck compatibility is currently unknown.
It is useful to revisit those checks at the point of purchase, not just when adding the game to a wishlist. The page may change its release window, technical requirements, language support, or feature labels before launch. For the price and included content, only rely on the live purchase page once it has a real transaction option; neither the current listing nor the RSI checklist gives a current Steam price.
If your decision depends on an existing pledge, treat store ownership as a separate question from whether the game is single-player. The single-player description clarifies the kind of game, but it does not settle which launcher a pledge will use or whether a Steam copy will be issued. A clear policy should name the entitlement and the supported download route; until one appears, avoid making a duplicate-purchase decision based on assumption.

Is there an edition to compare yet?

Steam Deck compatibility is marked unknown. RSI’s general requirements page says Linux and macOS are not currently supported, while Steam currently lists Windows 11 for its version. Check current store and RSI information if you use a non-Windows PC or handheld.

Bottom line: As of October 13, 2026, Squadron 42 is not purchasable or downloadable on Steam, and the listing shows no price. Q2 2027 is a planned window, not a confirmed launch date. Wishlist it if you want a notification, but wait to spend money until Steam posts a price and purchase option, CIG or RSI clarifies pledge-to-Steam entitlements, and the final PC requirements are available. For now, the biggest compatibility caution is Steam’s 8 GB VRAM and Windows 11 minimums, which differ from RSI’s older general guidance.
