Choose an open-world space game by checking whether your friends can travel, take on the activities you care about, and make progress together—not just whether the store page says “multiplayer.” Open-world scope and online co-op are separate features: ROCKFISH Games describes EVERSPACE 2 as a single-player open-world RPG, not a multiplayer or co-op game.
Is this multiplayer or co-op?
“Multiplayer” can mean that other players appear in a shared location; it does not automatically mean a small group can play the main game together. Before buying or committing to a long campaign, verify that friends can group up and participate in the activities your group wants to do. Look for explicit support for cooperative travel, combat, missions, building, resource gathering, or shared story progress.

Also check how players join one another: friend invites, parties, matchmaking, and access to a persistent world are different parts of the experience. A feature page may establish that grouping exists without establishing that every transition is seamless or that sessions are technically reliable.
Does exploration feel like one continuing world?
“Open world” can describe very different structures. Check whether players can freely move among star systems, planets, stations, and missions, or whether exploration is mainly a sequence of discrete levels and locations. For an example of broad travel continuity, Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as an open universe with travel from planetary surface to space and visitable stars. That is one game’s structure, not a definition every title follows.

Can your group do the activities it cares about together?
Make a short list of what your group actually wants to do, then confirm those activities are cooperative rather than merely present in the game. A title may offer exploration, combat, base building, gathering, trading, and story missions without supporting all of them in the same way for a group.
No Man’s Sky’s official description presents exploration and combat, while Hello Games’ multiplayer page describes activities including space battles, communal bases, and shared story progression. These are useful examples of cooperative possibilities to look for; they do not establish that every activity or session works identically.

How do grouping and shared worlds work?
Some games center on joining friends in a persistent universe; others are built around a party session or social hub. Check where friends meet, whether invitations are supported, what happens when the group changes activities, and whether the world persists when a player leaves.

What does a player-count figure actually describe?
Read the context attached to any player number. Hello Games says up to 32 players can use No Man’s Sky’s Space Anomaly social hub. That is a hub-specific figure, not a stated party-size limit for every activity or location. A large social space can be useful, but it is not by itself proof that your preferred missions support a group of the same size.
How much learning will the group need?
Compare the onboarding burden separately from the multiplayer feature list. Flight controls, navigation, crafting, survival, and economy systems can all shape how quickly a group gets to the activities it enjoys. Consider whether the game teaches those systems in play or expects players to consult outside guides.

Which kind of space activity—and risk—fits your group?
Decide whether the group is looking primarily for discovery, ship combat, base building, resource collection, trading, or competition with other players. A game’s advertised activity mix tells you more than the broad label “space MMO,” but it does not establish that all activities are equally cooperative.

- Exploration and combat: No Man’s Sky’s official descriptions include both, alongside social and shared activities.
- Social MMO play: CCP’s 2026 letter frames EVE Online as a social game and describes an intended progression from solo play toward co-play and shared purpose. Treat that as the developer’s stated direction, not a guarantee that every current activity is cooperative.
Check specifically whether player-versus-player risk is optional, limited to certain areas, or central to the experience. The cited descriptions do not settle that question for every game or mode, so consult the current rules for the title you are considering.
Verify practical details before you commit
Online features and platform support can change, and a feature description alone may not answer the details that determine whether friends can actually play together. Check the current game-specific and platform documentation for:
