What to Play After Black Flag Resynced: 8 Pirate Games by the Feeling You Want

Windrose is the closest broad successor if you want to build a pirate life, while Sea of Thieves is the strongest choice for a crew-based shared world. For a finished solo adventure, choose Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii; for Black Flag’s ship combat without its assassin story, choose Skull and Bones. Assassin’s Creed Rogue is the most direct in-family encore, and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is the best answer for writing and crew management.

There is no single Black Flag replacement because these games preserve different parts of the fantasy. The sections below separate authored campaigns, social sandboxes, naval loadouts, survival systems and role-playing depth so you can pick the loop you actually miss.

Which pirate game should you choose after Black Flag Resynced?

Choose by the activity you want to repeat, not by whether a game has a wooden ship in its marketing. This quick split usually gives a better answer than a universal ranking:

  • Want an authored solo campaign? Start with Pirate Yakuza, then look at Rogue if you want more Assassin’s Creed systems.
  • Want to make your own stories with friends? Sea of Thieves is the shared-world choice; Windrose is the building-and-survival choice.
  • Want the Jackdaw itself to be the main character? Skull and Bones puts nearly all of its progression into the ship.
  • Want crew relationships, dialogue and a fantasy archipelago? Deadfire replaces real-time action with a party-based role-playing structure.

Black Flag Resynced is the remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, not a new numbered sequel. It launched on 9 July 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as a separate purchase from the 2013 game. The remake uses the latest Anvil engine, adds ray-traced oceans, dynamic weather and reworked on-foot combat, and remains a solo campaign without multiplayer or downloadable content. Its added material includes the eight-mission A World Without Gold chapter about Blackbeard, a Stede Bonnet epilogue and three new Jackdaw officers.

1. Is Windrose the closest all-round successor?

Yes, if “after Black Flag” means exploring, boarding, building a base and gradually turning a crew into a pirate operation. Windrose is the broadest mechanical follow-up, but it is still a Windows PC Early Access game rather than a finished Black Flag-style campaign.

What you do in Windrose

Kraken Express released Windrose in Early Access on 14 April 2026. Its Steam description frames it as a PvE survival adventure that works solo or in co-op. The current build has three biomes, roughly 30 procedurally generated islands, more than 90 handcrafted points of interest, three playable ships, naval combat with boarding, building, crafting, Tortuga, factions and NPC workers. The developer estimates the current main story at about 50–70 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Co-op supports up to eight players through self-hosted or dedicated servers, although Kraken Express recommends parties of up to four for late-game performance. It has full controller support and is rated Playable on Steam Deck. That combination makes it the best fit if you want a persistent-feeling pirate routine—gather resources, improve a settlement, recruit help and return to sea—rather than a sequence of authored assassinations.

What Early Access changes

Steam listed 88% positive from 28,937 English-language reviews and 75% positive from 612 recent reviews when checked in November 2026. Those are live storefront figures, not a controlled quality test, and the lower recent percentage is a useful reminder that reception can move as patches change the game.

Kraken Express says it expects 1.5 to 2.5 years to reach the full-release version and plans to raise the price at version 1.0. Treat the current island count, balance and progression as a work in progress. Windrose is a poor choice if you need a polished, fixed campaign today or if you are buying specifically for console play.

PC requirements to check first

The minimum specification is demanding for a survival game: Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800, and 30 GB of storage. Those are the developer’s Steam requirements, so compare them with your machine before purchasing.

2. Is Sea of Thieves still the best co-op pirate game?

For a crew that wants a shared world, yes. Sea of Thieves makes coordination—not ship equipment—its central skill, so it delivers a very different pleasure from upgrading the Jackdaw alone.

Why a crew matters

Rare’s game asks players to divide real jobs: steering, trimming sails, loading and firing cannons, repairing damage, boarding opponents and defending the deck. PCGamesN describes the solo experience as comparatively dull, while group play turns the same systems into emergent stories. Ships can be decorated, but customization is cosmetic; you cannot install stronger cannons or a tougher hull. Victory therefore depends on navigation, timing and communication rather than a superior loadout.

The game supports online PvP, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, and Steam requires an Xbox Live account. The listed storage requirement is 100 GB. Custom Seas lets groups set their own rules, while faction battles and modes such as Last Ship Standing provide more structured competition. Experienced PvP crews can still punish newcomers, so a new player should expect a learning curve even in a friendly-looking world.

What the 2026 Edition contains

The 2026 Edition launched on 8 April 2026 as a package of eight years of live-service additions. The Steam app retains 3 June 2020 as its release date for that storefront listing, while the original game launched on 20 March 2018. Seasons run on a roughly three-month cadence with 50 Renown levels; Season 21’s listed activities included Talk Like a Pirate Day, Fight Nights, Emissaries of Fortune, Bilge Rats Weekenders and Last Ship Standing.

Steam showed 88% positive from 147,946 English-language reviews and 79% positive from 890 recent reviews in November 2026. The game is also distributed through Game Pass, although availability can vary by region and date. A Pirates of the Caribbean collaboration is one part of the wider live service, not the whole campaign.

3. Is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii like Black Flag?

It is a strong single-player pirate adventure, but not a seamless Caribbean replacement. Pirate Yakuza trades Black Flag’s continuous ocean for a handful of story-unlocked maps, designated landing points and arcade-leaning naval battles.

What makes it work

Released on 21 February 2025 by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the game follows Goro Majima after he washes ashore with amnesia. He becomes captain of the Goromaru, recruits a crew, hunts treasure and fights through Madlantis, a hidden pirate island with a casino and coliseum. Ghostly sharks and the contrast between modern Hawaii and wooden ships give it the oddball tone that sets it apart from historical pirate games.

On land, Majima switches between Mad Dog and Sea Dog fighting styles. At sea, broadsides auto-aim and nitro dashes make encounters brisk and arcade-like. Named crew roles and ship customization can be more granular than Black Flag’s crew-count model, but the combat is not a simulation of sailing or Caribbean history.

How open is its world?

Lee D’Amato’s ScreenRant comparison is the key qualification: Black Flag lets you point the ship across a mostly seamless, massive world, whereas Pirate Yakuza presents separate maps unlocked in order and connected by fast travel. Treasure hunts follow structured dungeon-raid routes instead of free island roaming. If you want authored set pieces and unusual characters, that structure is an advantage; if you want to chart your own course for hours, it is a limitation.

It is available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One. GameRant and ScreenRant both treat it as approachable for people who have not played earlier Yakuza games. OpenCritic’s 2025 figures were an 81/100 Top Critic Average with 84% of critics recommending it.

4. Is Skull and Bones worth it if the ship was your favourite part?

Skull and Bones is the focused answer for players who loved Black Flag’s naval loop more than Edward Kenway’s cities, stealth and character arc. It is an online Indian Ocean service game built around ship loadouts, progression and seasonal encounters, not a replacement for the full adventure.

Launched in 2024 after a long development, it has no equivalent to Black Flag’s city exploration or Assassin’s Creed narrative. VGTimes describes it as a spiritual successor to the naval combat only. Year Three content in 2026 added larger vessels such as the Galleon and Junk, seasonal bosses and deeper build options. Because seasons, progression and purchases change, check the current edition details before committing.

PCGamesN reported a six-hour trial before purchase. Gaming.net notes that an internet connection is required. Those conditions make Skull and Bones easier to sample than a full-price blind buy, but they also underline its live-service nature: it is best for players who want to tune a fleet and fight repeatedly, not for someone seeking a self-contained 40-hour story.

5. Is Assassin’s Creed Rogue the natural next step?

Yes, when the specific request is “more Assassin’s Creed sailing.” Rogue is not a 2026 sequel; it is the in-family naval encore built around Shay Patrick Cormac and the Seven Years’ War.

Originally released in 2014 on last-generation consoles, then on PC in 2015 and as a 2018 remaster, Rogue sends the Morrigan through the icy North Atlantic. Its naval tools include a Puckle gun and burning oil, and enemies can board your ship rather than waiting for you to attack. That reversal gives the campaign a sharper risk than Black Flag’s usual offensive rhythm.

6. Why choose Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire for a pirate game?

Deadfire is the best pick when pirate fiction means crew conversations, moral choices, ship management and a large archipelago rather than real-time broadsides. Obsidian released it on 8 May 2018 as a party-based role-playing game with a strong maritime identity.

You sail the Deadfire Archipelago, recruit a party, keep your crew fed and happy, and decide whether to act as a virtuous Watcher or attack almost every ship you meet. Battles can remain ship-to-ship or become turn-based boarding fights. The ship is a mobile base for an isometric CRPG, so exploration and dialogue carry as much weight as combat.

GameRant calls it one of the best isometric RPGs and the strongest pirate choice for that audience. GameTyrant recommends it to players who enjoy Baldur’s Gate-style role-playing, while PCGamesN describes it as a pure pirate game at heart. Eneba lists an average playtime of about 40 hours, though party builds and optional content can substantially change a run.

7. What does Sid Meier’s Pirates! still offer?

Sid Meier’s Pirates! remains the cleanest classic sandbox: you choose a nationality, sail the Caribbean, duel captains, trade, hunt treasure, dance at court and pursue personal goals in whatever order you like.

Firaxis released this version on 22 November 2004 as a remake of the 1987 original. Its visuals and interfaces show their age, and it lacks the cinematic presentation of Black Flag, but its free-form structure still explains why later pirate games keep borrowing its template. Pick it when systemic freedom matters more than modern animation, seamless transitions or online crews.

8. Is Caribbean Legend a good modern Sea Dogs alternative?

Caribbean Legend is a sprawling, rough-edged pirate-life simulation for players willing to trade polish for freedom. BlackMark Studio released it on 15 February 2024 as a modern descendant of the Sea Dogs and Age of Pirates tradition.

You get broad latitude to trade, fight, explore and shape a career, but the experience is known for dated graphics and jank. GameRant describes it as enjoyable while warning about that roughness. ScreenRant’s 2026 list cites roughly 200 hours of plundering and role-playing potential; treat that as the publication’s estimate, not a guaranteed campaign length. It is a better fit for patient sandbox players than for anyone seeking Black Flag’s cinematic pacing.

Which pirate games are adjacent rather than replacements?

Several excellent games use pirate themes without reproducing Black Flag’s open-world action loop:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Return to Monkey Island: the best choice for puzzle-solving and comedy, not an action sandbox. It is a 2022 adventure from Terrible Toybox with a story-first structure.
  • Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew: a single-player tactical-stealth game about an undead pirate crew and their abilities. Its ships frame missions rather than provide Black Flag-style naval combat.
  • Salt 2: Shores of Gold: an island-hopping PvE discovery game. Version 1.0 arrived in November 2025, and it has no naval combat; the developers do not plan to add it.
  • Corsair Cove: a pirate city builder from Limbic Entertainment and Hooded Horse, released for PC on 31 July 2026. ToyScout cited a 79 Metascore, an 82 OpenCritic Top Critic Average with 83% recommending, and 85% positive from 2,735 Steam reviews in August 2026. Those scores can change after updates.
  • LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game: a family-friendly adaptation of the first four films with local co-op, useful when the priority is accessible couch play rather than an open world.
  • One Piece Odyssey: a turn-based JRPG starring the Straw Hats, with story involvement from Eiichiro Oda and a Dramatic Scene combat system. It is pirate-flavoured anime role-playing, not a Black Flag-style sailing game.
  • Republic of Pirates, Tortuga: A Pirate’s Tale and SteamWorld Heist II: management or tactics-focused alternatives for players who prefer planning fleets, crews and turn-based encounters.

How were these games picked?

The ranking weighs the features that most often decide whether a post-Black Flag purchase feels right:

  • Authored campaign versus toybox: story-led games are separated from games that expect players to create their own objectives.
  • Ocean structure: seamless sailing, linked maps and structured missions produce very different kinds of exploration.
  • Naval depth: the list distinguishes broadsides, arcade controls, cosmetic ships and build-driven loadouts.
  • Setting: historical Golden Age adventures, modern theatrical fantasy and a fully fantasy archipelago are not interchangeable.
  • Product state: Early Access and seasonal services are identified instead of being presented as finished campaigns.
  • Platform and social design: Windows-only survival, console coverage, solo play and crew requirements materially change the recommendation.

The practical result is a set of different answers rather than a claim that one game replaces every part of Black Flag. Windrose covers the widest range of pirate activities, Sea of Thieves is the strongest social toybox, Pirate Yakuza supplies a finished oddball campaign, and Rogue remains the safest choice for an Assassin’s Creed fan who mainly wants another voyage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Black Flag 2?

No new numbered sequel is established here. Black Flag Resynced is the 9 July 2026 remake of the 2013 game, rebuilt as a separate release rather than presented as Assassin’s Creed V or another numbered follow-up.

How long is the Pirate Yakuza campaign?

TheGamer puts the main story at around 15 hours, with a longer playtime for completionists. Its compact length suits players who want a focused solo adventure rather than a multi-season sandbox.

What is Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition’s price?

Steam listed the Standard 2026 Edition at $39.99 in November 2026, with Deluxe at $49.99 and Premium at $59.99. Store prices and regional availability are volatile, so treat those as a dated listing rather than a permanent price.

How long does Black Flag Resynced take to finish?

Eneba lists an average playtime of about 24 hours for Resynced. That figure covers the remake as reported there and can vary with optional activities and how much of the added material you complete.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
