The best modern replacement for a forgotten Xbox 360 series depends on the part you miss. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the clearest successor to Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon: a cinematic, melancholy, turn-based RPG that launched on Xbox Game Pass and was later described as 2025’s unanimous Game of the Year. For Crackdown, choose Sunset Overdrive or inFAMOUS; for Viva Piñata, choose Stardew Valley; for Left 4 Dead, choose Helldivers 2; and for Banjo-Kazooie, Astro Bot is the strongest modern 3D-platformer, provided you own a PlayStation 5.
The original games are not all lost. Xbox backward compatibility still covers several of them, while unofficial fan recompilations have made dozens of 360 titles run natively on computers. The guide below matches each dormant franchise’s actual gameplay loop, mood, session type and current platform instead of treating every vaguely similar game as an equal substitute.

How should you choose a modern replacement?
Start with the original game’s defining verb, not its logo or marketing era. A game that restores climbing, gardening, portal placement or AI-directed horde runs is a stronger replacement than one that merely shares a science-fiction setting.

- Loop fidelity: Does the modern game recreate the activity you repeated for hours, or only the tone?

Play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 first. It is the rare modern RPG that combines realistic presentation, a mournful story and turn-based combat with timed defensive and offensive inputs—the combination 360 owners associated with Mistwalker’s two Xbox RPGs.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — the closest overall replacement
Sandfall Interactive’s 2025 RPG launched on Xbox Game Pass and became a breakout hit. Collider later called it 2025’s unanimous Game of the Year and “the most awarded game in The Game Awards history.” GameSpot still listed it among the best Xbox Series X games in October 2026. Those awards do not make it a sequel, but they explain why it is now the first answer to “what to play instead of Lost Odyssey?”

It is not a replacement for Lost Odyssey’s exact setting, four-disc scale or “A Thousand Years of Dreams,” so approach it as a spiritual successor in feel and ambition.
Metaphor: ReFantazio — a broader modern JRPG alternative
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the other major recommendation when you want a large, character-focused RPG. Collider described it as selling strongly in 2024, while GameSpot grouped it with recent award-caliber PlayStation 5 RPGs. Its fantasy setting and flexible combat systems differ from Lost Odyssey’s realistic military drama, but it offers the same kind of substantial solo journey rather than a short nostalgia exercise.
Can the original games still be played?
Yes. Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are backward compatible on modern Xbox consoles. PlayPorted’s October 2026 catalogue also lists Lost Odyssey Recomp as playable on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and Blue Dragon re:Blue as playable on Windows, macOS and Linux. These are unofficial projects: they require your own game dump and are not Microsoft storefront ports.
Phil Spencer said he still hears requests for both games during a Tokyo Game Show 2025 interview. His exact comment, as transcribed by Pure Xbox, was: “In terms of requests, they’re really all over… there’s love of the FASA catalogue when I think about Crimson Skies and MechAssault – people love those games, like from old old school,” followed by, “I’d like to add […] sitting here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon; games from our history which I do hear a lot about […] those are also two just, being at TGS, it would be stupid of me not to mention those.” Spencer called it a “dangerous question” and made no revival commitment.

Sunset Overdrive is the best Xbox-native choice, while inFAMOUS is the closest match for superpowered city traversal. Saints Row IV is the best substitute for Crackdown’s collectible hunt and escalating abilities.
Sunset Overdrive — best Xbox movement sandbox
Insomniac’s 2014 game turns movement into the main verb. You grind rails, bounce off objects, chain momentum and attack an absurd open world with an exaggerated arsenal. The tone is closer to a loud comic-book parody than Crackdown’s hard-edged superhero cop fantasy, but the constant vertical motion and collectible routes make it the most natural Xbox recommendation. It runs on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
inFAMOUS, Spider-Man and Just Cause 3 — choose the flavour of power fantasy
The inFAMOUS games give you a powered protagonist, a city shaped by moral choices and traversal that feels closer to Crackdown’s superhero premise. Marvel’s Spider-Man offers the most polished rooftop city and the smoothest traversal animation, although its story and web-swinging are more choreographed. Just Cause 3 is the choice for explosive sandbox experimentation rather than orb collecting.
Mind Skills Arcade’s October 2026 list names inFAMOUS, Prototype, Saints Row IV, Gravity Rush and Spider-Man as the closest Crackdown-like games. For co-op chaos, the original Crackdown 2 remains playable through backward compatibility, and Agents of Mayhem offers squad-based destruction.
Why is Crackdown itself still worth revisiting?
The first Crackdown sold more than 1.5 million copies in its first six months — ComicBook.com, 2026. Its appeal was the way every hidden agility orb changed the shape of the city: rooftops that were impossible at the start became routine routes later. Crackdown 3 arrived in 2019 with less ambitious destruction and no follow-up has been announced. ComicBook’s 2026 case is for a reboot rather than another direct sequel, and notes that the original runs better on current Xbox hardware.

Which game replaces Viva Piñata’s cozy collecting?
Stardew Valley is the safest multiplatform substitute, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the most social and decorative, and Pokopia is the newest named game to combine the same family-friendly collecting instincts.
Stardew Valley — the dependable all-platform answer
Stardew Valley replaces Viva Piñata’s daily rhythm of tending a space, discovering creatures and expanding a collection with farming, crafting, relationships and seasonal planning. It is less toy-like and more character-driven, but it supports the same low-pressure “one more in-game day” loop. Collider and Dot Esports continued to identify it as the default relaxing farm-and-life simulation in October 2026.
Animal Crossing and Pokopia
Animal Crossing: New Horizons made cozy collecting mainstream through decorating, visiting neighbours and filling a museum. Pokopia, described by GameSpot on 27 October 2026 as a combination of Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest Builders with Viva Piñata inspiration, is the closest recent example of the same colourful creature-and-world-building appeal.

What is the best Left 4 Dead alternative?
Helldivers 2 is the strongest current pick for tense four-player missions that regularly turn into comic disasters. Deep Rock Galactic and Warhammer: Vermintide 2 are better if you want class-based progression or a fantasy setting.
Helldivers 2 — co-op pressure with a modern perspective
Helldivers 2 changes Left 4 Dead’s first-person perspective to third person and replaces infected hordes with hostile alien and robotic armies. The essential session pattern remains: assemble a squad, push through objectives, survive a rising enemy response and extract while mistakes compound. GameSpot’s October 2026 PC coverage describes its missions as tense survival moments mixed with hilarious mishaps.
Friendly fire and limited reinforcements make communication matter more than individual power. It is a live-service squad game rather than a linear campaign with Valve’s AI Director, so it is a structural match, not a literal sequel.
Deep Rock Galactic and Vermintide 2
Deep Rock Galactic is the better choice for mining, procedural caves and class specialisation. Vermintide 2 offers close-quarters melee against overwhelming fantasy enemies. Back 4 Blood, from Left 4 Dead’s original developer, demonstrates how difficult it is to reproduce Valve’s pacing and polish; treat it as a historical comparison rather than the automatic winner.
What should I play while waiting for BioShock or Perfect Dark?
For BioShock’s narrative powers and strange environments, play Control or Atomic Heart. For Perfect Dark’s spy-action role on Xbox, choose 007 First Light. Neither is an official continuation, and both dormant series have uncertain futures.
Control and Control Resonant — ability-driven narrative action
Control combines paranormal investigation, telekinesis and a building that constantly rearranges itself. GamesRadar places it alongside BioShock as a narrative, ability-driven shooter. Its 2026 follow-up, Control Resonant, is described by GameSpot as an ability-driven action RPG set in a Hiss-invaded Manhattan. The games emphasise exploration and supernatural rules more than BioShock’s plasmids and underwater dystopia.
Atomic Heart — retro-futurist immersive-sim flavour
Atomic Heart supplies retro-futurist environments, grotesque machines and an ability-heavy first-person combat loop. It is a tone-and-mechanics substitute, not a replacement for BioShock’s environmental storytelling or moral choices.

Why not simply wait for the next BioShock?
Cloud Chamber’s next BioShock has been in development since at least 2019. Collider reported failed internal reviews as recently as 2025, the loss of roughly a third of the staff and no trailer. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was paraphrased by Collider in 2026 as feeling more positive about the project, but no release date is established. The original BioShock remains one of GamesRadar’s 25 best shooters to play, and its remaster is available now.
007 First Light — the current Xbox-accessible spy option
GameSpot’s October 2026 Xbox Series X list leads with 007 First Light, an origin story with close-quarters combat, shooting and intricate levels. It is the practical choice if you want a modern spy campaign on Xbox while the canceled Perfect Dark reboot is no longer something to wait for.
Perfect Dark Zero‘s campaign remains enjoyable on Series X according to Pure Xbox’s November 2025 coverage, although its 16-player and bot multiplayer suite is effectively dead. PlayPorted lists PerfectDarkZeroRecomp as playable on Windows and Linux.
Which puzzle game fills the Portal gap?
The Talos Principle 2 is the best full-length replacement, while Viewfinder and Superliminal focus on shorter, more experimental perspective tricks. Blue Prince is an adjacent layered puzzle adventure rather than a portal-gun clone.
The Talos Principle 2
The sequel builds elaborate first-person logic chambers around questions about consciousness, progress and civilisation. Its puzzles reward the same spatial reasoning that made Portal 2 durable, but the atmosphere is contemplative instead of comic.
Viewfinder and Superliminal
Viewfinder turns photographs into physical spaces, while Superliminal uses forced perspective and scale. Both recreate Portal’s delight in learning one impossible rule and then exploiting it. Valve has not announced a third Portal; Collider also points to fan-made Portal: Revolution, one of Steam’s best-reviewed mods, as a way to get more of the original formula.
Portal: Still Alive and Portal 2 remain sold on the Xbox store, including Portuguese support, according to Canaltech’s April 2026 coverage.
What plays like Sleeping Dogs?
Sifu is the closest match for hand-to-hand combat, while the Like a Dragon series is the better choice for a long Asian crime story with a large cast.
Sifu — combat first
Sloclap’s Sifu makes martial-arts timing the entire game. Parries, dodges, positioning and repeated attempts matter more than firearms or vehicle chases. Its aging system also gives failure a tangible narrative and mechanical cost, making it a good fit for players who remember Sleeping Dogs’ brutal street fights.
Like a Dragon — crime drama first
Sega’s Yakuza and Like a Dragon games provide dense districts, criminal organisations, melodrama and eccentric side stories. Earlier entries use real-time brawling; later Like a Dragon entries use turn-based combat. They do not reproduce Sleeping Dogs’ Hong Kong setting, but they preserve its combination of serious crime plotting and deliberately ridiculous detours.
Sleeping Dogs began as Activision’s True Crime: Hong Kong, was rescued by Square Enix and sold about 1.75 million copies in six months as a new IP — Collider, 2026. Square Enix still called that result a disappointment, declined a conventional sequel and pursued the canceled online project Triad Wars. United Front closed in 2016.

What is the best Banjo-Kazooie replacement?
Astro Bot is the strongest modern 3D collectathon, but it is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Super Mario Odyssey is the closest Nintendo alternative, while Donkey Kong Bananza shows that dormant mascot platformers can still return.

Astro Bot — exceptional, but not on Xbox
Team Asobi’s 2024 platformer constantly changes its movement, stage themes and collectible goals. GameSpot identifies it as the 2024 Game Awards winner and a constantly surprising 3D platformer; PCMag also placed it among the best platformers. The platform caveat matters: there is no Xbox or PC version in the cited coverage.
Super Mario Odyssey and Donkey Kong Bananza
Super Mario Odyssey offers open-ended worlds, precise platforming and a capture mechanic that lets Mario borrow enemies’ abilities. That transformation loop also makes it a useful comparison for Kameo: Elements of Power. WhatCulture’s October 2025 coverage cites Donkey Kong Bananza as evidence that a dormant platform mascot can return successfully.
The Xbox 360 version of Banjo-Kazooie is backward compatible, with widescreen support and improved performance. Fan project Banjo: Recompiled is another unofficial PC route.
What should I play instead of Kameo?
Super Mario Odyssey is the closest match for capturing and transforming into creatures, while Kena: Bridge of Spirits supplies family-friendly fantasy action and exploration.

Fable
Fable Anniversary is the honest choice if you want Albion now. Canaltech described it as a warm-up before Playground Games’ reboot. An IGDB-based calendar listed 23 February 2027 for Fable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, but that is a third-party catalogue entry, not a Microsoft-confirmed release date. Do not plan around it until an official announcement arrives.
Project Gotham Racing
Forza Horizon 6 is the current arcade-racing substitute. GameSpot praised it as a love letter to arcade racing across Japan in October 2026. It does not restore Project Gotham Racing‘s kudos system or urban circuit identity, which is why fans still ask for PGR specifically.
Saints Row
Fellowship Entertainment placed Saints Row in a vault of underleveraged brands it intends to activate through remasters, new treatments, reimaginings and licensing. The company said, “Imagine a strong room of IPs, underleveraged brand equity that we intend to activate through remasters, new game treatments, reimaginings, and adaptation and licensing.” It also said, “The fans waiting for those franchises are real, and they’ve been patient. We hear that. Activating even a handful of these properties creates meaningful, incremental value, and it’s something that we are actively working on.” That is stated intent, not a dated game announcement. Saints Row IV remains the best existing Crackdown-like entry in the series.

Spencer named both when discussing fan requests. Rights involving Topps and FASA complicate merchandising and cloud distribution; Microsoft controls BattleTech game rights, but older contracts do not automatically cover every modern delivery method. MechAssault 3 was canceled, while Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge is backward compatible on Xbox Series X|S. Mecha BREAK is evidence that mech games still have an audience, not a continuation of MechAssault.
Prototype and other single-player action games
Prototype still offers one of the strongest power fantasies: consume enemies, shapeshift and cross a quarantined city at speed. Marvel’s Spider-Man, inFAMOUS and Sunset Overdrive modernise parts of that loop. Activision gutted Radical in June 2012 after Prototype 2 underperformed; Microsoft’s ownership of Activision creates a theoretical revival opening, but no project is announced.
