If you want another RPG after Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, start with Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for the closest Nintendo DS match, or Chrono Trigger on DS for a classic party adventure. If BioWare’s dialogue and companions were the draw, try Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, or Baldur’s Gate 3. Those are three different kinds of follow-up: a mascot RPG, a DS-era role-playing game, or a deeper companion-focused story.
Sonic Chronicles is an unusual starting point: a Sega-published, turn-based Nintendo DS RPG developed by BioWare and released in North America on September 30, 2008. BioWare director Mark Darrah led a team of 30, but the game’s dialogue choices do not create the far-reaching plot consequences associated with the studio’s better-known RPGs. Metacritic’s current DS listing gives it a 74 Metascore from 55 critic reviews, with 25 positive, 30 mixed, and no negative reviews.

What makes Sonic Chronicles different from other Sonic games?
Sonic Chronicles is the first Sonic RPG, and BioWare’s only handheld game. GameSpot writer Chris Compendio described it in 2026 as “The 2008 Nintendo DS game is BioWare’s first–and only–handheld game.” That makes it an outlier in both series: Sonic gets a party-based role-playing adventure, while BioWare takes its dialogue-and-companion approach onto Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld.
The story begins after Sonic defeats Eggman and goes on vacation. He is called back when Knuckles and the Chaos Emeralds are taken. The resulting adventure involves an echidna tribe from another dimension, new character Shade, and familiar faces such as Tails, Amy, and Eggman. The story is more involved than a typical Sonic plot, though it is simpler than BioWare’s larger console RPGs.

Exploration uses stylus-driven movement through isometric, hand-drawn environments. Characters have different traversal abilities: Sonic dashes and loops, Tails flies, Knuckles climbs, and Amy smashes obstacles. You choose four characters for the active party. Chao can be equipped to provide battle bonuses, and rings serve as currency.
Combat is turn-based, with special POW attacks performed through touch-screen taps and swipes. These action commands are the game’s most direct link to titles such as Super Mario RPG and Elite Beat Agents. Dialogue lets Sonic answer compassionately, inquisitively, or rudely; a response may alter a conversation, create romantic tension with Amy, or avoid a battle. It does not redirect the overall story as choices can in Mass Effect. Compendio put it plainly: “While your choices might have affected the direction of the conversation, added romantic tension with Amy Rose, or even skipped some battles, this was still no Mass Effect, and your decisions didn’t cause any ripple effects on the plot.”

GameSpot’s 2026 retrospective says the cliffhanger was never resolved. It names BioWare’s acquisition by EA and a lawsuit by Sonic comic writer and artist Ken Penders over similarities between the game’s villains and his Archie Comics echidna clan as commonly cited reasons a sequel did not follow. GameSpot reports that the lawsuit was dismissed and says Sega is believed to have avoided those characters afterward to reduce further legal risk. That account is a retrospective explanation, not a confirmed official statement of Sega’s reasoning; no sequel is announced in the sources reviewed.
Which Nintendo DS RPG is the closest follow-up?
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story is the strongest same-system recommendation if you liked exploring with a distinctive party and timing your attacks. For a broader, more classic RPG adventure, choose Chrono Trigger DS; for stylus play that feels different from Sonic’s, try The World Ends With You.
1. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
This is the closest fit for the combination of comic mascot characters, exploration, and action-command combat. Its battles reward timed inputs, while the overworld gives characters abilities that change how they move and interact with the environment. That echoes the pleasures of switching among Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, without asking you to follow the same story or characters.
Nintendo Life describes the series as an expansion of the Super Mario RPG idea and identifies Bowser’s Inside Story as a high point. Its guide prefers the original DS release to the later 3DS update. If you want another game in the same family afterward, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is another funny DS RPG with four-button battle actions; Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is an earlier entry on Game Boy Advance.
2. Chrono Trigger
Pick Chrono Trigger if the party-based, turn-driven side of Sonic Chronicles mattered more than its mascot cast. The DS edition is a 2008 release of the classic RPG, with combination attacks that can call to mind the team-up moves in Sonic’s game. Nintendo Life calls the DS version the definitive edition, and ScreenRant notes that it includes PlayStation cutscenes, a dual-screen interface, and additional content.

It is a better choice for a classic, carefully constructed RPG journey than for Sonic-style character banter or stylus combat. ScreenRant also notes that finding a DS copy can be expensive second-hand; cartridge prices fluctuate, so check current listings rather than treating an old asking price as a standard.
3. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn suits players who want exploration and environmental puzzles alongside turn-based fights. Nintendo Life characterizes it as a solid DS RPG and a chance to return to a much-loved Game Boy Advance series. It is not a Sonic-like party comedy, but its mix of magical exploration and problem-solving makes it a natural option if you liked using character abilities outside battle.
4. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Choose Dragon Quest IX for a longer, more traditional role-playing campaign and a party you can customize. Nintendo Life describes it as a console-sized epic on DS, with multiplayer and no corners cut. ScreenRant characterizes a full playthrough as comparable in length to Dragon Quest VIII, with completionist play substantially longer; it also highlights the game’s unusually broad party customization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is a change of pace from Sonic Chronicles: it emphasizes building a party and committing to a substantial quest rather than moving through a compact, character-led adventure. If you would rather have a story that spans a lifetime, ScreenRant also points to the DS version of Dragon Quest V.
5. The World Ends With You
The World Ends With You is the choice if you enjoyed tapping and swiping during POW attacks and want a more ambitious use of the DS hardware. Its combat is built around the two screens and stylus, with a Shibuya setting shaped by fashion, music, and urban culture. Nintendo Life calls its dual-screen combat innovative and adaptable to the player’s style.
A Switch edition exists, but ScreenRant argues that the original experience cannot truly be recreated without a DS. Choose the DS version if the appeal is specifically learning a system designed for that hardware; choose another entry here if you mainly want a conventional turn-based battle system.
6. Radiant Historia
Radiant Historia is a good match for players who want a tighter story built around branching timelines. Its combat is puzzle-like, and Nintendo Life highlights its cast and time-travel premise. A 3DS version, Perfect Chronology, arrived in 2018 and is not described as drastically different from the DS original. The 3DS release is a separate option, not a game that an original DS can play.

Other DS and 3DS choices
- Final Fantasy IV on DS is a challenging remake with strong presentation, for players who want a more demanding traditional RPG.
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor blends strategy-RPG battles with extensive customization. It is notably darker and more tactical than Sonic’s adventure; a 3DS version called Overclocked also exists.
- Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver are full creature-collecting adventures rather than a light echo of the Chao bonuses. Nintendo Life calls them must-have remakes, while Gamer Koala ranks them among the DS/3DS library’s leading RPGs. The games also include Pokémon that follow the player and support the PokéWalker accessory.
- For other tastes, Nintendo Life’s DS RPG list includes Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Pokémon Black and White, their sequels, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Etrian Odyssey III, Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and Infinite Space.
Which mascot RPGs feel most like Sonic Chronicles?
If what you liked was seeing familiar cartoon characters become an RPG party, follow the Mario branch rather than the BioWare branch. Bowser’s Inside Story is the closest DS-era fit, while Super Mario RPG is the template critics invoked when Sonic Chronicles arrived.
In 2008, reviewers repeatedly compared Sega’s game with the Mario RPG tradition: an isometric mascot world, RPG statistics and leveling, plus timed attacks. GameRevolution called the comparison with the 1996 SNES Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars obvious. That connection is useful for choosing a follow-up, but it does not mean the games play identically. Sonic’s POW inputs use the touchscreen, while the Mario titles build their own timing-based battle rhythms.
For a natural order, start with Bowser’s Inside Story, then try Partners in Time or the earlier Superstar Saga if the character humor and battle timing work for you. Go back to the original SNES Super Mario RPG to see the older foundation of the subgenre, or choose the current-platform Super Mario RPG edition if you want to play on newer hardware. This path is best when the appeal was Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy sharing a journey—not the promise of deep branching decisions.
Which RPGs capture BioWare’s companion storytelling?
If you followed Sonic Chronicles because BioWare made it, move to one of the studio’s core RPG series for deeper dialogue and companion relationships. KOTOR, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age are the clearest next steps; Baldur’s Gate 3 is a strong current alternative if you want relationships to react to your actions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a direct BioWare precedent and a sensible first stop if you want a party in a familiar licensed universe. It has the studio’s role-playing and dialogue focus, rather than Sonic’s comparatively light conversations. The specific edition and platform experience vary, so confirm which version you are considering before buying.
Mass Effect
The Mass Effect series is the clearest contrast with Sonic’s limited dialogue branches. Its conversations and companion relationships are central to the experience, which is why reviews of Sonic Chronicles used it as a benchmark for what the BioWare name might imply. If you hoped that a rude answer to Amy would reshape the larger plot, Mass Effect is a better fit for consequential role-playing choices.
Dragon Age
Dragon Age offers the fantasy-party version of BioWare’s companion focus. It is especially relevant to this game’s history because Mark Darrah, who directed Sonic Chronicles, also directed the first two Dragon Age games. Start with Origins if you want a foundational entry, and choose based on platform and edition because the series spans multiple releases.

Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the current pick if the most important thing is companions whose relationships change in response to what you do. JeuxEnd named it its first recommendation for that kind of evolving relationship in an October 24, 2026 article following reports of EA’s October 21 announcement that BioWare was closing. Its turn-based battles and D&D-style freedom make it a different experience from a BioWare dialogue-wheel RPG; JeuxEnd specifically cautions that it is not “a medieval Mass Effect.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How was Sonic Chronicles received, and is it worth playing?
The critical picture is mixed rather than disastrous: Metacritic’s 2008 score is 74/100 from 55 reviews, categorized as “Mixed or Average.” Its current critic breakdown is 25 positive reviews (45%), 30 mixed (55%), and zero negative (0%). Individual reviews ranged from Game Informer’s 8.5/10 and VideoGamer’s 8/10 to 6.5 scores from GameSpot and IGN, and GameRevolution’s 6/10. Metacritic’s current user score is 6.2 from 133 ratings; its older February 2022 snapshot showed 6.9 from 118 ratings, so those figures describe different snapshots, not a single trend.
The positive case is a recognizable cast in a more ambitious story, accessible RPG mechanics, and a few ideas tailored to the DS. Game Informer called the game “good for dedicated (and lapsed) fans, the BioWare faithful, and anyone just looking for a decent RPG on DS.” Nintendo Life praised the writing, while 1UP highlighted the light action elements’ contribution to exploration and puzzle-solving. The counterargument is that the battle system and story do not develop enough to satisfy players expecting a major BioWare RPG. IGN said the game picks up after its first few hours, but judged that many DS players had superior RPG options.
The soundtrack also drew sharply different reactions: GameSpot’s 2026 retrospective calls it widely reviled, while Game Informer’s 2008 sound blurb praised its guitar riffs. A story that the intended soundtrack was replaced shortly before printing is reported as unpinned rumor, not an established production fact.
Whether it is worth playing depends on what you want from it. For a Sonic fan interested in the series’ first RPG, a BioWare oddity, or a shorter and more accessible DS role-playing game, it has a distinct appeal. For a long epic, extensive tactical depth, or choices that reshape a plot, the recommendations above are stronger fits. VideoGamer’s 2008 reviewer called it short and estimated “five or six hours max” for hardcore players; that is one critic’s duration judgment, not an official completion-time figure.
What should you know before choosing a DS game?
In 2026, playing these original releases generally means finding a working DS-family system and a cartridge. A Nintendo DS cannot play 3DS titles, so games such as Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology and Devil Survivor Overclocked require a 3DS or 2DS. A 3DS can play DS cartridges, making it the more flexible choice if you want both libraries.

Hardware and used-cartridge availability matter more than a published list price here. ScreenRant gives the original Nintendo DS launch as November 21, 2004, with an original US MSRP of $149.99; that historical price is not a guide to what used hardware or games cost now. Used prices vary by title, condition, and region, and the DS version of Chrono Trigger is specifically noted as potentially pricey second-hand. Check the exact edition before purchasing, particularly where a later 3DS update or modern-platform edition also exists.
Do not assume Sonic Chronicles has an official modern digital release: no confirmed digital rerelease or Nintendo Switch Online listing was found in the sources reviewed. If you want the original game, plan around DS hardware and a cartridge rather than an unverified storefront listing.
How we picked
The recommendations prioritize the three reasons someone might seek another game after Sonic Chronicles: similar DS hardware and play feel, a mascot-party RPG with timed actions, or BioWare-style dialogue and companions. Within the DS choices, closeness of combat, exploration, and party structure comes first; broader classics and more demanding alternatives follow. The BioWare path favors established games with companion-driven stories, while clearly separating the very different design of Baldur’s Gate 3. Nintendo Life’s DS RPG guide, published reviews, and the named 2026 coverage inform the shortlist; this ranking is a fit-based guide, not a claim of comparative testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Sonic Chronicles take to beat?
There is no official completion-time figure established here. VideoGamer’s 2008 reviewer estimated “five or six hours max” for hardcore players, which is a critic’s judgment rather than a publisher playtime measurement.
Is Sonic Chronicles suitable for kids?
Game Informer lists the game’s rating as Everyone. That rating is useful for age guidance, though it does not tell you whether a child will enjoy its turn-based battles or substantial dialogue.
Did Sonic Chronicles sell well?
No reliable unit-sales figure is established in the available coverage. The review scores and user ratings indicate reception, but they cannot be used to infer how many copies Sega sold.
