What to Spend Skill Points on First in Valor Mortis

By VGSources Team 10 min read

For most new players, buy Maximum Endurance first. It enlarges the shared resource used by attacks, blocks and dodges, so it improves nearly every fight. If ordinary hits are killing you before stamina becomes a problem, take Maximum Health instead. Your next purchase should match your defense: Blocking Impact for a guard-focused Saber build or Parrying Impact for a Rapier and timing-focused build. Add core melee damage and endurance-cost upgrades before investing in narrow status, ammunition or weapon-family specializations.

The best first skill depends on what is ending your attempts

Valor Mortis does not have one universal opening sequence for every character. The right first purchase fixes the failure you are seeing most often. If you run out of the resource needed to attack, block or dodge, Maximum Endurance gives immediate value across your entire combat loop. If you can still act but die to one or two mistakes, Maximum Health is the better first investment because it gives every build more room to recover.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

After that first survivability choice, commit to the defensive action you actually use. Blocking Impact rewards a Saber player who holds guard and absorbs pressure. Parrying Impact rewards a Rapier player who relies on precise timing. Once your defense is dependable, buy Melee Damage and then Melee Endurance Cost. These general upgrades improve more encounters than conditional nodes that only work against a certain status, enemy, distance or ammunition situation.

Build or problem Early order Why it works
General beginner Maximum Endurance → defensive skill → Melee Damage → Melee Endurance Cost → Maximum Health Builds a larger action budget, then improves the defense you use before adding reliable damage and efficiency. Add Health sooner if enemy hits are ending attempts.
Guard-focused Saber Maximum Endurance → Blocking Impact → Melee Damage → Melee Endurance Cost More endurance supports repeated attacks and blocks, while Blocking Impact strengthens the Saber guard loop.
Parry-focused Rapier Maximum Endurance → Parrying Impact → Melee Damage The larger resource pool gives more attempts at attacks, dodges and defensive timing; Parrying Impact pays off when parries are your main answer.
Fire or Transmutation Maximum Health or Maximum Nephtoglobin → Nephtoglobin Sufferance → Transmutation Damage Choose Health when survivability is the problem; choose the larger Nephtoglobin pool when your build is already organized around that resource.
Firearm-focused Maximum Health → Ammo Restock → Maximum Endurance, then firearm-specific nodes Health protects a fragile ranged approach, while Ammo Restock addresses the resource that limits firearm use.

Why Maximum Endurance is usually first

Maximum Endurance is the broadest early upgrade because the resource is shared by several actions. Attacks consume it, but so do blocks and dodges. Increasing the maximum does not make one weapon family stronger only in a narrow circumstance; it lets you continue the complete attack-and-defense sequence for longer before you must recover or stop attacking.

When endurance is your real bottleneck

Take this node first when you regularly face situations such as these:

  • You can survive an enemy’s hit, but your next attack or dodge is unavailable because the endurance bar is empty.
  • Holding guard through a pressure string leaves you unable to counterattack.
  • You are forced to disengage after a short exchange even though your health remains comfortable.
  • A missed attack, block and emergency dodge together consume the entire resource pool.

The benefit is especially noticeable for a new player because early fights involve more defensive actions and less efficient attack timing. A larger pool gives you more chances to correct an input without immediately losing access to every defensive option.

When to take Health instead

Choose Maximum Health before Maximum Endurance if incoming damage is killing you first. This is the correct adjustment when a single mistake, an unavoidable hit or a failed defensive read removes most of your health while your endurance bar is still available. Health helps every build, including melee, transmutation and firearms, because it increases the number of errors you can survive while learning enemy patterns.

Do not select Endurance automatically just because it is the usual recommendation. Compare the cause of your last few deaths: a depleted action resource points to Endurance; a full or mostly full resource bar beside an empty health bar points to Health.

Pick one defensive identity early

Once you have your first survivability node, buy the defensive upgrade that reinforces your weapon and timing preference. These choices are more valuable early than spreading points across every weapon tree.

Blocking Impact for Saber guard play

Blocking Impact belongs near the top of a Saber-focused route when you spend fights holding guard, reducing incoming pressure and looking for a safe counter. It makes the guard-centered loop more dependable: endurance supports the block, the block creates an opening, and Melee Damage later makes the opening matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This route is appropriate if you prefer controlled exchanges over repeatedly waiting for a narrow parry window. It does not mean you should never dodge or attack first; it means your primary answer to pressure is a block that you can convert into a counterattack.

Parrying Impact for Rapier timing

Parrying Impact is the corresponding early choice for a Rapier or another timing-focused defense. Select it when you consistently practice reading attacks and want successful parries to define your combat rhythm. The node has less value if you rarely attempt parries, because an unused defensive bonus cannot compensate for a habit built around dodging or blocking.

Add Maximum Health earlier on this route if a missed parry routinely ends an attempt. A parry build benefits from damage and timing rewards, but it still needs enough health to survive the learning curve while enemy animations become familiar.

Core damage and efficiency upgrades come next

Melee Damage

After Maximum Endurance or Maximum Health and your chosen defensive node, Melee Damage is the most generally useful offensive purchase for a close-range build. It improves the attacks you already use instead of requiring a special enemy condition, a particular status effect or a rare ammunition drop. Higher damage also shortens exchanges, reducing the number of attacks you must read and the amount of endurance you spend before an enemy falls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Melee Endurance Cost

Melee Endurance Cost follows naturally once your attacks are doing acceptable damage. Lowering the resource burden lets you continue a combo, retain enough endurance for a defensive response and recover from a missed swing without becoming helpless. The order between Damage and Endurance Cost can move slightly if you are clearly failing for one reason: take Cost sooner when your damage is adequate but every sequence empties the bar; take Damage sooner when you have endurance left but enemies survive too long.

These two upgrades are deliberately broad. They are safer early purchases than a node that only activates on headshots, a particular status, a specific resistance interaction or an ammunition condition you have not yet built around.

Specialized routes: Nephtoglobin, Transmutation and firearms

Fire and Transmutation builds

A power-focused fire or Transmutation build can move Maximum Nephtoglobin into the opening instead of treating it as a later luxury. The larger pool matters when Nephtoglobin is the resource that limits your planned abilities. The alternative is Maximum Health if surviving ordinary combat is still the larger problem.

Once the pool is large enough to support the build, take Nephtoglobin Sufferance and then Transmutation Damage. This order establishes resource capacity before improving the effect that consumes it. If you buy damage first but cannot use the ability often enough, the specialization will not solve the underlying limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firearm-focused builds

For a character built around firearms, Maximum Health is the safer first purchase in the suggested route, followed by Ammo Restock. Ranged play can fail when ammunition runs out even if the character has enough endurance, so Ammo Restock addresses a different bottleneck from the melee sequence. Take Maximum Endurance afterward, then choose firearm-specific nodes once you know which weapons and ranges you actually use.

Do not buy Ammo Restock early merely because you sometimes carry a firearm. It is a priority when firearms are the center of your damage plan and ammunition scarcity is regularly interrupting fights.

What to postpone in the early tree

Early points are limited, so delay upgrades that are powerful only after a narrow condition is routinely present. Current guide advice identifies status, headshot, ammunition-drop, resistance and similar conditional nodes as weaker first purchases in the current balance.

  • Status-focused nodes: wait until your attacks apply the relevant status consistently and you have enough general survivability to reach that payoff.
  • Headshot bonuses: postpone them unless your weapon, range and accuracy make headshots a dependable part of nearly every encounter.
  • Ammunition-drop bonuses: delay them if you are not running a firearm-centered build; they do little for a melee opening.
  • Resistance upgrades: buy them when a particular damage type is demonstrably ending attempts, not as a default first investment against unknown threats.
  • Extra weapon families: avoid dividing early points among Saber, Rapier and other trees before one combat loop is reliable.

The aim is not to ignore these nodes forever. It is to make your core actions work first, then buy a conditional bonus once your equipment and habits activate it often enough to justify the cost.

Should you focus on one weapon tree?

Yes, at the beginning, focus on the weapon family you are actually using. A concentrated route gives you a functioning attack pattern, a matching defensive upgrade and predictable resource demands. Splitting points among every weapon family delays the upgrades that improve the attacks you perform in almost every fight.

That does not permanently lock your character. It simply keeps the first part of progression coherent. If you later decide that a Rapier’s parry timing suits you better than a Saber guard, you can change direction through the respec system rather than weakening all of your early options at once.

Respeccing at a Lantern

You can respec at a Lantern for a fee when changing weapons or defensive style. Treat this as a safety valve, not permission to spend points randomly. The fee means experimentation has a cost, while the option protects you from being trapped by an early choice.

When a respec is sensible

  • You have changed from Saber guard play to Rapier parries, or the reverse.
  • Your actual deaths show that Health, rather than Endurance, is the missing foundation.
  • You committed to firearms or Transmutation and now need the matching resource and damage nodes.
  • A balance change makes your original conditional specialization less useful than the general route.

How to decide before paying the fee

  1. Review several recent deaths and identify whether health, endurance, defense, damage, Nephtoglobin or ammunition caused the failure.
  2. Write down the weapon and defensive action you use in most encounters, not the one you intend to use eventually.
  3. Move points toward the appropriate core sequence: survivability, matching defense, general damage and resource efficiency.
  4. Keep the new route for enough fights to judge it under normal pressure instead of respecing after one difficult enemy.

Node costs and the Lantern fee can change with balance updates, so check the value shown in your current game before confirming a reset.

Amber slots are separate from these first skill points

PC Gamer reported in 2026 that you unlock a new Amber slot every ten levels and listed five slots overall at levels 5, 15, 25, 35 and 45. Ambers add passive bonuses and abilities, but they are a separate progression consideration from the first skill-point priorities described here.

Plan your skill points around the combat loop you can use now; do not delay Maximum Endurance, Health or your defensive node while waiting for a later Amber combination. When a new slot opens, evaluate its passive effect alongside your established route rather than replacing the fundamentals automatically.

A practical decision checklist

Use these checks whenever you earn a point:

  • What ends the fight? Empty health means Maximum Health; an empty action resource means Maximum Endurance.
  • Which defense do you perform? Guarding points toward Blocking Impact; deliberate parries point toward Parrying Impact.
  • Is your main weapon clear? Keep early points in that weapon’s functional route instead of buying several unrelated families.
  • Are general attacks already reliable? If yes, add Melee Damage, then Melee Endurance Cost.
  • Does a specialized node activate often? If not, postpone status, headshot, ammunition-drop and resistance bonuses.
  • Has your plan changed? Use a Lantern respec for a fee rather than carrying a route that no longer matches your weapon or defense.

How patch changes affect this advice

The ordering above is practical build advice based on current guide material, not an independently measured ranking. Patch balance, node costs and Lantern respec fees can change, and the value of a conditional node depends on your weapon, accuracy and enemy encounters. Recheck the in-game descriptions and costs after a major update, then apply the same principle: fix the resource or survivability problem you actually have before buying a narrow bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I respec skill points in Valor Mortis?

Yes. A Lantern allows you to respec for a fee, which makes changing from a Saber guard route to Rapier parries or another specialization possible without starting over.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Should I buy Maximum Health or Maximum Endurance first?

Buy Maximum Endurance when attacks, blocks or dodges regularly exhaust your shared resource. Buy Maximum Health when incoming damage kills you while endurance is still available.

Is Blocking Impact better than Parrying Impact?

Neither is universally better. Blocking Impact suits a Saber guard-focused style, while Parrying Impact suits Rapier or another timing-focused defense.

When should I invest in firearm or Transmutation skills?

Move them into the opening only when that is your main damage plan. Firearm routes prioritize Ammo Restock, while fire or Transmutation routes prioritize Maximum Nephtoglobin, Nephtoglobin Sufferance and Transmutation Damage.
