Hidden Chronicles was Zynga’s first social hidden-object game, launched on Facebook in January 2012. Players searched illustrated scenes, solved puzzles and followed a mystery while restoring Ramsey Manor. The launch entered a category that was new for Zynga—not a genre the wider game industry had never explored.
When did Hidden Chronicles launch?
Zynga launched Hidden Chronicles on Facebook in January 2012. A contemporaneous TechCrunch launch report dated January 4, 2012 said the game was rolling out publicly that morning. Zynga’s 2012 SEC filing lists its platform as Facebook and Zynga.com and identifies January 2012 as its launch month.
Zynga described it in that filing as “our first social hidden object game.” That makes the launch significant as a new direction for the company’s portfolio, rather than the invention of hidden-object games.
How did Hidden Chronicles work?
Search scenes and solve puzzles
Players examined illustrated scenes to find requested concealed objects. Completing searches, quests, puzzles and mini-games helped them master scenes, earn coins and experience points, unlock locations, and uncover clues in a mystery centered on Ramsey Manor. The opening story involved a letter from Uncle Geoffrey. TechCrunch reported that the game had 50 scenes at launch and included jigsaw and concentration-style mini-games.

Restore a manor and play with friends
Progress also went toward restoring and customizing Ramsey Manor. Players could visit friends’ estates and hide gifts for them. In the timed “FastFind” mode, friends competed to spot the most hidden objects in 60 seconds.
Free-to-play with optional purchases
A contemporaneous gamebiz report published January 6, 2012 characterized the game as free-to-play with paid items. Zynga’s filing also says players could buy clues. The available reports do not establish a complete item or pricing list.

How popular was Hidden Chronicles?
Zynga’s 2012 SEC filing reported that Hidden Chronicles reached 30 million monthly active users within 40 days of launch. The filing called it the largest hidden-object game on Facebook at that time. This was a company-reported monthly-active-user figure—not downloads, total lifetime players or daily active users.
Was Hidden Chronicles really a new genre?
No, not for the game industry as a whole. The “untapped” description referred to Zynga’s entry into hidden-object games and the perceived opportunity for the format on Facebook. Contemporary coverage discussed other games in the genre, including Playdom’s Facebook title Gardens of Time, as well as hidden-object games on casual gaming sites. GamesBeat’s January 4, 2012 coverage described the category as relatively under-served on Facebook, not nonexistent elsewhere.

That context matters: Hidden Chronicles brought Zynga’s social-game approach to a familiar search-and-puzzle format. Available contemporary figures do not provide a consistent head-to-head comparison with Gardens of Time, so claims that one surpassed the other should not be inferred from the reported audience number.
