To use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck, you need an eligible Xbox Game Pass plan for paid titles, a browser shortcut configured in Desktop Mode, a Bluetooth or USB controller, and a reliable internet connection. Microsoft’s documented Steam Deck method installs the community-maintained Microsoft Edge Flatpak, adds it to Steam, grants it access to controller devices, and opens xbox.com/play from Gaming Mode. Xbox lists 10 Mbps download speed as the minimum and recommends about 20 Mbps for a better PC-class stream, preferably over 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Steam Deck support remains beta, so browser or SteamOS updates can require maintenance.

What exactly do you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck?

The complete setup has four parts: an Xbox account and eligible subscription, a browser-based Steam shortcut, a supported input device, and a network that can sustain a low-latency video stream. The Deck does not run the Xbox Cloud Gaming service as a native SteamOS application; it opens the service in a browser.

  • Subscription: An eligible Xbox Game Pass tier is required for most paid cloud games. Select free-to-play titles, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
  • Browser: Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions use the community-maintained Microsoft Edge Flatpak installed through Discover.
  • Steam integration: Edge must be added as a non-Steam game, given access to controller devices, and configured with Xbox’s play URL and display flags.
  • Controller: Use a compatible gamepad over Bluetooth or USB. The Deck’s built-in controls can also be mapped through Steam Input.
  • Connection: Allow at least 10 Mbps download bandwidth; 20 Mbps is the more practical target for PCs and tablets. A strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or wired Ethernet is preferable.

You should also have a Microsoft account ready to sign in at the Xbox Cloud Gaming website. A mouse and keyboard make the first configuration easier, although Steam + X opens the Steam Deck touch keyboard when you need to type in Desktop Mode.

Which Game Pass plan do you need?

You do not have to buy the highest-priced tier. Xbox’s current United States plan page lists three cloud-enabled options, each with a monthly cloud-hour allowance. The figures below are a US snapshot for 2026, not permanent worldwide pricing.

Plan Cloud games and allowance US price listed Notable differences
Essential 50+ games; 5 cloud hours per month $9.99 per month Entry cloud tier; no day-one release promise stated
Premium 200+ games; 10 cloud hours per month $14.99 per month Xbox-published games are listed as arriving within one year
Ultimate 500+ games; 15 cloud hours per month $22.99 per month Day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, shortest stated waits and best stated streaming quality

Xbox says game counts, titles, features, and availability vary by region, plan, and platform. Taxes, promotions, and supported catalogs can also change the amount you pay. On September 3, 2026, Xbox announced that eligible Game Pass plans would move to monthly cloud-hour allowances beginning in November, with additional hours available for purchase through the Xbox Store. Check the plan page for your market immediately before subscribing; the allowance or price you see may differ from the US listing above.

Choose by expected cloud use rather than by the Deck itself. Essential is enough for occasional sessions if the games you want are included. Premium doubles the listed monthly cloud time and expands the catalog. Ultimate is aimed at players who want day-one releases and the bundled services, or who value the shortest queues and highest stated streaming quality. A subscription does not make every console or PC game available: the specific title must be in the cloud catalog for your region and plan.

Does Steam Deck officially support Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Xbox describes Steam Deck support as beta. Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 wording was, “Steam Deck – Support is in beta.” In practice, the service is delivered through a browser shortcut rather than an officially maintained SteamOS client.

Microsoft’s support instructions also include an important qualification: it does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official Edge-on-SteamOS support. That means a browser update, a change in the Flatpak, or a SteamOS update can alter how the shortcut behaves. Keep the setup instructions and your launch options available so you can recreate the shortcut if an update breaks it.

How do you install the browser and create the Steam Deck shortcut?

Perform the initial setup in Desktop Mode. The following sequence follows Microsoft’s documented Edge method and keeps the service launchable from Gaming Mode afterward.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam menu, choose Power, and select Switch to Desktop. Connect a mouse and keyboard if available.
  2. Install Edge from Discover. Open the Discover Software Center, search for Microsoft Edge, and install the community-maintained Edge Flatpak. Microsoft does not maintain this package itself, so its listing or behavior can change.
  3. Add Edge to Steam. Launch Steam in Desktop Mode, open Games, choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, select Microsoft Edge, and confirm the addition.
  4. Grant controller-device access. Open Konsole and run this command exactly:
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge

The override allows the Flatpak to see the udev device information needed for controller input. If you mistype the application identifier, the permission will not apply to Edge.

  1. Open the shortcut’s properties. In Steam’s non-Steam library, right-click Microsoft Edge, choose Properties, and find the Launch Options field.
  2. Append the documented launch options. Enter the following as one line, including the quotation marks around the URL:
--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

The window size fits the Deck’s display, the scale factors improve readability, and kiosk mode opens the cloud site directly instead of leaving you at a general browser window.

  1. Choose a controller layout. Open the shortcut’s controller settings and apply a gamepad-friendly template. Microsoft’s guide suggests the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template, which supplies gamepad inputs while retaining a way to move a pointer through browser menus.
  2. Return to Gaming Mode. Close Desktop Mode, switch back to Gaming Mode, and launch the Edge shortcut from the non-Steam library. Sign in when the Xbox page requests your Microsoft account.

On later launches, start the shortcut from Gaming Mode rather than opening Discover or Konsole again. If the browser opens to the wrong page, recheck the complete launch-options line; Steam replaces the old value if you accidentally paste the URL into the wrong field.

How fast does your internet need to be?

Xbox gives 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum for cloud play. Its detailed guidance says 20 Mbps provides the best performance on consoles, PCs, and tablets, while its getting-started guidance recommends wired Ethernet where possible. Treat 20 Mbps as a practical floor for a comfortable PC-style stream, not as a guarantee of low latency.

Connection factor What to target on a Steam Deck Why it matters
Download bandwidth 10 Mbps minimum; about 20 Mbps preferred Lower speeds leave less room for the video stream and can trigger quality reductions or stalls.
Wi-Fi band 5 GHz on a dual-band router Usually provides a cleaner, faster local path than a weak or congested 2.4 GHz signal.
Wired option Ethernet through a compatible USB-C adapter Removes much of the wireless interference and jitter that can interrupt play.
Play location Test where the Deck will actually be used A speed test beside the router may not represent the signal at a sofa, bedroom, or hotel room.

Pause large downloads, game updates, video streams, and cloud backups while playing. Xbox notes that streaming quality is affected by your connection, location, device, and other factors, so a fast speed-test result alone cannot predict responsiveness. If the picture becomes blocky or pauses, test the Deck at its playing location, move closer to the access point, switch to 5 GHz, or connect Ethernet before changing browser settings.

What controller and input options work?

For the normal gamepad experience, Xbox requires a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox controllers are supported, and many third-party pads work as standard gamepads. An Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest separately purchased option because its button labels match the prompts shown in most Xbox titles.

The Steam Deck’s built-in controls can work through Steam Input after Edge has been added as a non-Steam game. The controller layout is attached to that shortcut, so make sure you edit the Edge entry rather than a different game. The suggested Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template is useful because browser sign-in and menus may still need pointer movement.

Some cloud games accept touch controls or mouse-and-keyboard input, but support varies by title. Do not assume that a game with a touch-capable interface will expose every control method through the Deck browser; use a physical controller when the title’s input requirements are unclear.

Can you use Chrome instead of Edge?

Microsoft’s documented Steam Deck procedure is specifically written for Edge and includes the Edge Flatpak application identifier in the udev override command. The supplied instructions do not establish an equivalent, officially supported Chrome setup. You may see community experiments with other browsers, but they are outside Microsoft’s documented path and can fail when controller permissions, kiosk flags, or browser updates differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the most reproducible setup, use the Edge shortcut first. If you test another browser, keep the working Edge entry intact so you still have a known recovery route, and expect to recreate permissions and launch options using that browser’s own Flatpak identifier.

What should you check when the shortcut or controller fails?

Edge launches, but the controller does nothing

  • Confirm the controller is paired over Bluetooth or connected by USB before launching the shortcut.
  • Verify that you ran flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge in Konsole.
  • Reopen the shortcut’s Steam Controller settings and apply a gamepad layout rather than a mouse-only profile.
  • Close and relaunch Edge after changing the permission; an already-running Flatpak may not pick up the change.

The page opens, but the display is tiny or not in kiosk mode

Inspect Launch Options and replace the contents with the complete documented line. Missing either scale-factor flag can make text difficult to read, while omitting --kiosk leaves you in a normal browser window. Keep the URL in quotation marks so Steam passes it as one argument.

Streaming pauses or quality drops

  • Measure bandwidth at the Deck’s actual play position, not only beside the router.
  • Move from congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to 5 GHz, or use Ethernet through a USB-C adapter.
  • Stop downloads and other high-bandwidth activity on the network.
  • If the connection is consistently below Xbox’s minimum, improve the network before troubleshooting the browser.

An update breaks the setup

Because the Edge Flatpak is community-maintained and Steam Deck support is beta, updates can change menus, permissions, or browser behavior. Recheck the non-Steam shortcut, rerun the udev override, and confirm the launch options. If the Flatpak itself has changed, reinstalling it from Discover may restore missing package files, but Microsoft does not promise ongoing Edge-on-SteamOS support.

How should you decide whether the setup is worthwhile?

The browser setup is most useful when you want access to a Game Pass cloud catalog without installing Windows or filling the Deck’s storage with large games. It is less attractive if your network is unstable, you need offline play, or your preferred titles are not included in your region’s cloud catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose Essential for occasional cloud sessions and a lower monthly cost, after confirming your games are among its listed titles.
  • Choose Premium when you need more monthly cloud time and a broader catalog but do not require day-one releases.
  • Choose Ultimate when day-one games, the bundled services, stated shorter waits, or the highest listed streaming quality justify the additional cost.
  • Improve the network first if you are deciding between a plan upgrade and connection troubleshooting; a more expensive tier cannot fix local Wi-Fi jitter.

Plan names, cloud-hour limits, prices, game counts, and regional availability are moving targets. Verify the current Xbox listing and the specific games you intend to play immediately before purchase, especially around the November 2026 allowance change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do unused monthly cloud hours roll over?

The current plan listing describes a monthly allowance but does not establish a rollover policy. Check the billing and cloud-hours terms shown for your account before assuming unused time carries into the next month.

Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck without installing Windows?

Yes. The documented approach runs the service in a browser from SteamOS, using Desktop Mode only for installation and configuration. It does not require replacing SteamOS with Windows.

Why does the Xbox page ask me to sign in again on every launch?

The shortcut opens a kiosk browser session, and cookies or account data can be cleared by browser settings, Flatpak resets, or a reinstall. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the subscription and avoid clearing Edge’s site data if you want the session retained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are all Game Pass games playable with the Deck’s built-in controls?

No. Control support is determined by the individual game, and some titles are designed around a controller while others offer touch or mouse-and-keyboard input. Keep a physical Bluetooth or USB gamepad available for games whose Steam Input profile is incomplete.
