In a short demo, Kotaku’s Kenneth Shepard found both characters compelling, and saw promise in the game’s mix of real-time action and tactical party management. Those are early hands-on impressions—not a verdict on the finished game.
What’s new in Final Fantasy VII Revelation?
The previews point to character-specific combat as a major draw, alongside a system called FITS that lets players equip job-based abilities to characters. Combat still asks players to balance direct action with tactical choices, including switching party members and using Synergy attacks. The available coverage is a small slice of the game rather than a complete feature guide.
Cid fights as a mobile Dragoon
Shepard describes Cid as a spear-wielding Dragoon whose Jump attacks let him cross distance and strike enemies. What stood out to Shepard was not only the airborne attack: he also praised Cid’s speed, ability to switch targets, and capacity to stagger foes. That combination made Cid feel distinct in the demo.
Vincent changes his range and role
Vincent attacks with a handgun from a distance, then can transform into a Galian Beast and fight more aggressively at close range. Shepard felt the transformation gave Vincent nearly two playstyles, making him more than a conventional ranged character. That is a preview impression, not confirmation of how the full roster will balance or perform.

FITS adds job-based abilities
In Shepard’s demo, Cloud used Summoner FITS to call Shiva and Titan. The preview presents FITS as a way to equip job-based abilities to any character, potentially changing how familiar party members play. It does not establish the full list of jobs, restrictions, or customization options.
How does the combat work?
The Kotaku preview describes combat as a hybrid: players take real-time action while making tactical decisions, switching among characters, and using Synergy attacks. Resources are shared across a three-character party, so character choice and timing are part of managing the team—not just choosing which fighter to control.
That framework helps explain why Cid and Vincent made such an impression in Shepard’s session: their movement and transformation offer visibly different ways to engage enemies within the same party system. But a brief demo cannot establish whether those differences remain equally useful across the whole game.

| Preview | What it covered | What it did not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Kotaku, Kenneth Shepard | A short demo focused on combat, including Cid, Vincent, and Cloud using Summoner FITS. | A full assessment of the story, the complete combat system, or the finished game. |
| SmashPad, Danreb Victorio | A 45-minute PAX West demo covering Highwind travel, regional exploration, Costa del Sol, Gold Saucer content, and minigames. | The session ended before Victorio could try FITS; it does not provide a hands-on account of that system. |
The difference matters: one preview offers a glimpse of FITS and character combat, while the other shows more of the world and activities. Neither is an exhaustive test of the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the main reservations?
Shepard is positive about the demo’s playability but less certain about the story. He says his reservations about the Remake trilogy’s story may carry over to Revelation, and worries that an abundance of minigames could get in the way. Those are his concerns, not demonstrated problems with the finished game; the SmashPad session confirms that it included a range of activities, but does not establish whether they overwhelm the main adventure.

When does Final Fantasy VII Revelation come out, and what platforms are reported?
SmashPad’s September 10, 2026 preview reports an April 8, 2027 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. That is a reported schedule, not a guarantee; release dates and platform plans can change, so check the publisher or relevant official store for current details.
Steam search results showed a preorder page and standalone and bundled editions when accessed on October 9, 2026, but the store page redirected to an age-check screen. Current edition details could not be confirmed from that page. The available information also does not establish Amazon availability or whether a physical edition is offered.
Is the early excitement justified?
There is a clear reason for Shepard’s enthusiasm: Cid’s mobility and Vincent’s transformation sound like meaningful combat identities, while FITS could let players reshape familiar characters. But the hands-on evidence remains narrow. The demos do not settle the full game’s story quality, how well its systems hold up over time, or whether its minigames are a welcome change of pace or too much of a distraction.
For now, Revelation looks promising on the strength of a few specific combat ideas, rather than on a comprehensive preview of the finished experience.
