Minecraft Java Edition 1.8.8 was announced on July 27, 2015. The question’s “1.8 8” refers to version 1.8.8, a maintenance release in the Minecraft 1.8 line—not the original 1.8 update.
Why do some sources say July 28?
A contemporaneous SpigotMC post dated July 27 points to Mojang’s announcement that day. The Minecraft Wiki (Fandom), a secondary reference, lists July 28 while citing the July 27 announcement. The available sources do not explain the one-day difference, so it should not be attributed to a time zone or rollout without further evidence.

What kind of update was Minecraft 1.8.8?
It was a small patch in the 1.8 version line. The Spigot Team described it as containing “a small handful of server changes”; secondary documentation characterizes the patch as mainly addressing security bugs.
