PlayStation Plus games do not all use the same license. A monthly game you add to your library can be played while your membership is active; an Extra or Premium catalog game also has to remain in the catalog and be included with your tier. Canceling stops renewal, not access immediately: benefits continue through the paid period. Your saved data is a separate matter from your game license, and local, cloud, and streamed saves have different rules.
This guide covers the US service rules verified October 30, 2026. Catalog availability and benefits can differ by region, tier, device, and console, so check the current listing for a specific game.

What does a PlayStation Plus game license let you play?
It depends on how the game reached your account. The key distinction is between a monthly game claimed into your library and a game downloaded from a rotating catalog. A download is not, by itself, proof that you claimed a monthly offer or bought the game.
Monthly games you add to your library
Add a monthly game to your library during the period when PlayStation offers it. PlayStation says a game added this way can be downloaded and played while you have an active Plus membership. It is not a purchase that grants permanent access after membership ends.

From January 2026, PlayStation says PS4 games are added to Plus only intermittently. Do not assume every monthly lineup includes a PS4 title; check the current offer and the platform listed for the game.
Extra Game Catalog and Premium Classics Catalog
Catalog access has two conditions: you need an active membership at the right tier, and the title must still be included in the service. Extra or Premium is required for Extra Game Catalog titles; Premium is required for Premium Classics Catalog titles. Downloading a catalog game does not turn it into a permanent library claim. If the title leaves the catalog, the download alone does not preserve your right to play it.

A game you purchase is a separate access route from a Plus catalog entitlement, so a catalog removal date does not govern that purchase. A physical edition requires compatible hardware and the disc inserted for disc play. The relevant purchase, account, console, and edition still matter; do not assume that saves transfer between every edition of a game.
Which date determines when a game stops working?
There are three different dates to check: the offer window for adding a monthly game, your membership’s paid-through date, and a catalog title’s removal date. They answer different questions, and one should not be used as a substitute for another.
| Access type | What must remain true | What can end access | Save detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly game added to library | Active Plus membership and a claim made during the offer | Membership ends; the next monthly lineup alone does not revoke a prior claim | A downloaded game’s save is local; cloud storage is a separate Plus benefit |
| Extra Game Catalog download | Active Extra or Premium membership and title still in the catalog | Membership or tier change, or title removal | Keep the local save; consider a purchase if the title leaves and is available to buy |
| Premium Classics Catalog title | Active Premium membership and title still available in the relevant catalog | Membership or tier change, or title removal | Save location depends on whether that title is downloaded or streamed |
| Purchased game or compatible disc | Applicable purchase or disc, account, and compatible hardware | Not a Plus catalog removal date; a disc must be inserted for disc play | Check compatibility for the specific game and edition |
Your paid-through or next-payment date is in Subscription Management. It tells you when a paid membership period ends or renews; it does not tell you when a catalog game will leave. Check the current PlayStation catalog or announcement for the title’s availability instead. PlayStation’s product information describes catalog additions as monthly, while its older May 23, 2022 FAQ described a first-Tuesday monthly refresh and a mid-month catalog refresh. Treat current title announcements—not that older schedule—as authoritative for a particular offer’s start or end time.

What happens when you cancel or downgrade Plus?
Canceling a subscription turns off renewal; it does not immediately end the benefits you have already paid for. Those benefits continue through the end of the paid period. When the membership ends, PlayStation says access to Plus monthly games and online storage ends as well, while games bought at a Plus discount remain yours.
A downgrade is different from a cancellation. Higher-tier benefits are removed when the downgrade takes effect on the next payment date. For a catalog game, losing the tier that includes it can remove access even if the game has not left the catalog. For a monthly game, the relevant condition is whether you still have an active Plus membership, not whether the game appeared in a newer monthly lineup.
PlayStation’s May 23, 2022 service FAQ says downloaded Extra and Premium catalog games require a PSN connection every seven days for validation. It says this particular check does not apply to Essential monthly downloadable games. This is dated PlayStation guidance, not an independent test or a promise that a game will work offline indefinitely.
Why is a PlayStation Plus game locked?
A padlock can have several causes, so first identify the entitlement instead of assuming the game needs to be purchased again. Check the account that acquired or claimed it, the membership and tier, and whether a catalog title is still available.
- Identify the access route. Check whether the game was purchased, added as a monthly game, or downloaded from a catalog. Confirm the signed-in account and, where relevant, its purchase or claim history.
- Check the account and catalog separately. Confirm the membership is active and includes the required tier. For a catalog title, check that it remains in the catalog. Look up the next-payment date separately; it is not a catalog removal date.
- Check service and sharing settings. If the entitlement should still be valid, check PlayStation service status and the console’s sharing settings before restoring licenses.
- Restore licenses if appropriate. On PS5, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. PlayStation says restoring licenses will not affect your data. It can help with an entitlement that should still exist, but it cannot fix an expired subscription.
- Use a valid access route if the title has left. Restoring licenses does not bypass a catalog removal. If the title is available for purchase, buying it is a separate route; keep the existing save and verify game and edition compatibility. For a disc copy, use a compatible disc-capable console and keep the disc inserted.
Where are PlayStation Plus game saves stored?
A downloaded game’s save is stored on the PS5 or PS4 console. A streamed game’s progress is stored in PlayStation’s game-streaming storage. Plus online storage can help move progress between streaming and a local download, but that transfer is not automatic.

Back up or move a downloaded game’s save
On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) and use the upload or download controls. PS5 auto-sync and PS4 auto-upload are separate settings with different behavior: PS4 saves can auto-upload when configured, but downloading a PS4 save to PS5 console storage is a manual action.
On PS4, PlayStation documents automatic uploads from a primary PS4 and a manual upload route: Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. Check that the intended save has uploaded before deleting or replacing the local copy.
Move progress from a streamed game to a download
Use PlayStation’s save-transfer process to copy streamed progress to Plus online storage, then download that save to the console for use with a downloaded game. A streamed save does not simply appear in the local installation. Before relying on a transferred save, check whether the specific game and edition support it.
Know the backup limits
PlayStation’s support information gives Plus online storage capacity as up to 100 GB for PS5 saves and up to 100 GB for PS4 saves, with a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are storage limits, not guarantees that a particular game save is compatible with another edition.
PlayStation’s storage guidance permits a USB drive for PS4 saved data but does not support USB-drive storage for PS5 saved data. An M.2 SSD can expand installed-game storage; it does not preserve access to a game removed from Plus and is not a PS5 save backup.

What happens to saves if Plus expires or a catalog game leaves?
The game entitlement and the save file are separate. A local save should not be confused with permission to launch a Plus game: if the membership ends or the catalog title is removed, the game can become inaccessible even though a local save remains on the console.
Cloud storage is different. When Plus ends, online-storage access ends, but current US PlayStation guidance does not establish a fixed period for which inaccessible cloud saves remain stored. Do not rely on a particular number of days for later recovery. While access is available, arrange a supported backup—especially for PS4 saves, for which PlayStation documents USB storage—and verify it before deleting the console copy.
If a catalog title leaves, preserving a local save gives you a chance to resume if you later obtain access through an available purchase. That does not guarantee the save will work with every edition, region, or platform version; check the particular title’s compatibility.
Can you use DLC after a Plus catalog game becomes unavailable?
PlayStation says purchased add-ons for a downloaded catalog game cannot be used with that game after the membership expires or the title leaves the catalog. The add-on purchase itself is not erased: the add-ons become usable again if you resubscribe or purchase the title. PlayStation also says add-ons are not supported when streaming a title.
Availability and benefits vary by region, tier, console, and device. These rules describe the US PlayStation pages reviewed for this article; do not assume that US Premium streaming or catalog availability applies in every market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do PS Plus games leave at the same time each month?
No fixed refresh hour or universal end time should be assumed for an individual offer. PlayStation’s current product information says games update monthly, so use the game’s current listing or announcement for its availability window.
Can I keep a PS4 save on a USB drive if I cancel Plus?
PlayStation documents USB storage for PS4 saved data, unlike PS5 saved data. Confirm the intended file is copied before removing the console copy; a USB backup does not extend the Plus game license.

The current US guidance reviewed here says online-storage access ends when Plus ends, but does not specify a guaranteed retention period for inaccessible cloud saves. Keep a supported local backup rather than relying on an unstated recovery window.
Can I use purchased DLC while streaming a catalog game?
PlayStation says add-ons are not supported when streaming a title. For a downloaded catalog game, its guidance says purchased add-ons are usable again if you resubscribe or purchase the game after access ends.
