Silent Chests don’t sit at fixed, guaranteed spots you can memorize. They appear at random around Sanctuary, they can spawn in Helltide areas, and you need a Whispering Key to open one. Published location lists are useful places to look, but they are not a reliable map of where chests will be when you arrive.
How Silent Chests spawn
A secondary guide describes Silent Chests as randomly appearing around Sanctuary in place of normal chests. In practice, that means a chest you saw at a particular location on one play session is not something you can count on finding at the same spot later. No official source we could find establishes the full spawn logic, how often chests appear, or whether exact locations rotate.

Location lists from older guides
The Icy Veins guide lists six known possible spawn points. Its own caveat is that the chests will not always be present at those points. That guide is legacy material, so treat its six points as places to check, not as current coordinates. Before relying on any list, confirm when it was published or last updated and whether it covers the version of Diablo 4 you are playing.
Helltide areas
Blizzard’s official patch notes state: “Silent Chests can now spawn in areas where Helltide is active.” That confirms Helltide zones are eligible. It does not mean a Helltide will contain a Silent Chest, and it does not mean Helltide raises the spawn rate. Include Helltide zones in your search if you are already there, but do not plan a Helltide around finding one.

What you need to open a Silent Chest
- A Whispering Key. This is required to open a Silent Chest.
- Keys are consumed on use. Blizzard Watch notes that a key is used up when you open a chest, so one key covers one chest.
- Key price (legacy figure). The Icy Veins guide reports a price of 20 Murmuring Obols at a Curiosities Vendor. That guide is old, so check the current in-game price before planning around it.
- Earning Murmuring Obols. Blizzard Watch identifies open-world events as a common way to build up Murmuring Obols.
A practical search routine
- Before leaving town, confirm you have at least one Whispering Key in your inventory so you can open a chest the moment you find one.
- If you have no key, check your Murmuring Obol count and the Curiosities Vendor’s current price for a Whispering Key.
- Sweep the overworld and open-world events, watching for a Silent Chest as you go.
- If you are using a published list, visit its points in order, but move on if a point is empty. The chest may not be present there.
- If a Helltide is active near you, check it as well, since Silent Chests can spawn in those areas.

A seasonal exception
Blizzard’s official Season of Witchcraft article says Whisper Wood sigils for Rootholds can be found in Whisper Caches and Silent Chests. That is a rule for that season only and should not be read as a permanent reward source for Silent Chests.
