Windows stores complete installed driver packages in the Driver Store, normally at %SystemRoot%System32DriverStoreFileRepository. That folder is the package repository Windows uses for staging and servicing drivers. Some individual driver files are copied into runtime locations such as %windir%system32 or %windir%syswow64, but those copies are not a complete, dependable backup. To inspect or preserve a package, use the built-in pnputil utility rather than copying files by hand.

%SystemRoot% is an environment variable that points to the Windows installation directory. On many computers it resolves to C:Windows, but Windows can be installed on another volume or in a differently named directory. Using the variable in commands and documentation is safer than assuming the drive letter.
%windir% is another commonly used variable for the same Windows directory. In File Explorer, you can paste %SystemRoot%System32DriverStoreFileRepository into the address bar to resolve the actual path on that PC. The directory is protected because its contents are part of Windows’ managed driver installation process.

What is stored in FileRepository?
FileRepository contains staged driver packages, not just the file that makes a device operate. A package includes an INF file and every file referenced by that INF. It can also include catalog and supporting files needed for trust validation and installation.
Microsoft describes the Driver Store as “a trusted collection of inbox and non-Microsoft driver packages.” Windows validates a package and its catalog before staging it. Keeping the complete package together lets Windows install, repair, or roll back a device without searching for missing components.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- INF file: Installation instructions that identify hardware, services, files, and registry settings.
- Catalog file: The package’s signed trust information, when required by the package.
- Referenced binaries: Such as
.sys,.dll, or other files named by the INF. - Supporting data: Additional files required by that particular package.
Folder names inside FileRepository are generated for staged packages and are not intended to be human-friendly labels. A folder that appears to match a graphics, audio, chipset, network, or controller vendor is still managed package data. Do not rename, edit, or remove files in place.
Are driver files also stored in System32 or SysWOW64?
Yes. During installation, Windows can copy selected driver components into runtime directories such as %windir%system32 or %windir%syswow64. Those locations contain files where Windows or a device service may load them, while the Driver Store retains the INF-based package source.
The two locations therefore serve different purposes:
| Location | Purpose | Complete package backup? | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|---|
%SystemRoot%System32DriverStoreFileRepository |
Staged INF packages and their referenced files | Yes, at package level | Inspect only; do not manually edit |
%windir%system32 or %windir%syswow64 |
Runtime copies for some driver components | No | Do not use alone as a backup |
A folder supplied to pnputil /export-driver |
Exported copies of selected or all packages | Yes, for the exported packages | Copy to another disk or USB drive |
| Vendor installer or download cache | OEM-specific setup files | Not guaranteed | Check the vendor’s documentation separately |
Copying a single DLL or SYS file from System32 may capture a runtime component but omit the INF, catalog, version relationships, and other files needed to reinstall the device. A package-level export is the safer way to preserve a working driver.

How do I list installed driver packages?
Use PnPUtil from an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft says PnPUtil is built into Windows and is the recommended tool for managing driver packages. The basic enumeration command focuses on third-party packages; it does not display every in-box package shipped with Windows.
- Open the Start menu, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter
pnputil /enum-driversand press Enter. - Read each package’s published name, provider, class, date, version, and signing information in the output.
- To show the files associated with each package, run
pnputil /enum-drivers /files.
The published name normally uses an oem#.inf form. That name identifies the staged package as Windows knows it; it is more useful for administration than guessing from a FileRepository folder name.
If the command reports that elevation is required, close the window and reopen Command Prompt with administrative rights. If a package is absent from the basic list, it may be an in-box driver rather than a third-party package, or it may belong to a device that is no longer staged.
How do I export drivers for a backup?
PnPUtil can export complete packages, including the INF and files referenced by it. Create the destination on a different disk or removable drive so the backup survives a Windows repair or storage failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Connect the destination disk or USB flash drive and create a folder, such as
D:DriverBackup. - Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
pnputil /export-driver * D:DriverBackup, replacing the destination with your actual path. - Wait for PnPUtil to report the export results, then open the destination and confirm that package subfolders and INF files are present.
- Keep the exported INF, catalog, and supporting files together. Do not rename individual package files.
The documented syntax is PNPUTIL /export-driver <oem#.inf | *> <target directory>. Using an asterisk exports all packages PnPUtil can enumerate; specifying an oem#.inf exports one package. Because the basic inventory is centered on third-party packages, do not assume this export is a complete image of every inbox driver integrated into Windows.
Modern export syntax is documented for Windows 10 version 1607 and later. PnPUtil itself is built into Windows Vista and later, but available switches can vary by Windows release. On an older installation, run pnputil /? to see the syntax supported by that build before starting a backup.

Can I copy the DriverStore folder manually?
You can inspect the folder, but manually copying or modifying its contents is not the supported way to create or service a driver installation. Microsoft instructs administrators not to remove or modify staged files outside the normal staging process.
A raw copy also has practical weaknesses. It may be incomplete if a package is being updated, difficult to identify later, and missing the clean package boundaries that PnPUtil preserves during export. Use the Driver Store as a diagnostic location and use pnputil /export-driver when you need portable package copies.
Never delete a FileRepository subfolder simply because its name looks old or because a device is not currently connected. Removing a needed package can make a device fail after a reboot, hardware change, rollback, or Windows repair.
How do I find which package belongs to a device?
Device Manager is useful when you are starting with hardware rather than a package name. Open Device Manager, expand the relevant hardware category, open the device’s Properties, and use the driver-related information to identify the provider, version, date, and files associated with that device. Then compare those details with the PnPUtil inventory.
This two-stage approach avoids deleting or exporting the wrong package:
- Start in Device Manager when you know the device, such as a graphics adapter, audio controller, network adapter, or game controller.
- Start with
pnputil /enum-drivers /fileswhen you know the published INF or need a package-wide inventory. - Match provider, class, version, and file names rather than relying only on a vendor word in a folder name.
For offline servicing, Microsoft provides Get-WindowsDriver to inspect drivers in an online Windows installation or a mounted Windows image. That is a different task from checking the live Driver Store: it examines the image you specify, which may be a mounted installation source rather than the running system.

What is the safest way to remove an unwanted driver?
Removal should follow an identification and recovery plan, not a FileRepository cleanup. First determine whether the package is still required by a connected device, a virtual device, or a recovery scenario. PnPUtil’s inventory guidance warns that unnecessary drivers can create security or stability risks, but a package should be verified as nonessential before removal.
- Record the package’s published name and provider with
pnputil /enum-drivers. - Export the package or create another recoverable backup before changing it.
- Create a Windows restore point before removal when that option is available.
- Use supported device or package-management procedures rather than deleting files from FileRepository.
- Restart and test the affected hardware, especially network, storage, graphics, and input devices.
If a removal leaves hardware unavailable, restore the package from the exported backup or use Windows recovery options. The exact recovery route depends on the Windows edition and whether the device still appears in Device Manager; the important distinction is that recovery uses the package and its metadata, not an isolated SYS file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where do manufacturer driver installers keep their files?
OEM setup programs may retain downloaded installers or extraction caches outside the Driver Store. There is no single Microsoft-defined cache path that applies to every manufacturer, Windows edition, or driver utility. A vendor cache can be useful for rerunning an installer, but its presence and completeness are not guaranteed.
Treat three things separately: the vendor’s original installer, the staged package in FileRepository, and runtime copies in system directories. For a Windows-level backup, the exported package is the predictable, portable item. Keep the original vendor installer as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for package export.

What should a gaming PC owner back up?
For a gaming system, prioritize packages whose loss would prevent the machine from displaying an image, connecting to the network, producing sound, or accepting input. That commonly means graphics, chipset, network, audio, storage-controller, and USB or controller-related packages. The Driver Store does not distinguish “gaming” drivers from other hardware packages, so use Device Manager and PnPUtil together to identify what the PC actually uses.
Export before a major Windows upgrade, motherboard replacement, clean installation, or graphics-driver experiment. Store the export on a separate drive and label it with the Windows version and date. This gives you a known package set if the new installation cannot immediately reach Windows Update or the manufacturer’s download page.

Which Windows driver location should I use?
Use FileRepository to inspect the staged package, System32 or SysWOW64 only when troubleshooting a runtime file, and a PnPUtil export folder for backup or transfer. The Driver Store is the authoritative package repository; runtime directories are not complete backups; and direct edits to either protected Windows locations or staged package files can leave the system inconsistent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does pnputil not show every driver on my PC?
The basic pnputil /enum-drivers inventory is aimed at third-party driver packages. Windows inbox packages are not all shown by that command, so use Device Manager for a device view or Get-WindowsDriver when examining an online or mounted Windows image.
Why is my Windows folder not on C:?
Windows can be installed on another drive or in a differently named directory. Resolve %SystemRoot% or %windir% on that computer instead of hard-coding C:Windows.
Is an OEM driver installer the same as a Driver Store backup?
No. An installer may be a setup wrapper, a compressed download, or an extraction cache, and its contents vary by manufacturer. A PnPUtil export preserves the staged INF package and its referenced files in a form intended for driver management.
Can I back up only the graphics card driver?
Yes. First use pnputil /enum-drivers and device information to identify the package’s published oem#.inf name, then export that package with the documented pnputil /export-driver syntax. Exporting all packages is broader, while a single-package export requires accurate identification.
