Where Is the Steam Download Cache? How to Find and Clear It

Use Steam's Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache control for the supported cache reset. It does not remove installed games, and Steam requires you to sign in again afterward.

If you mean the cache Steam clears to troubleshoot download or startup problems, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache. Steam does not document one universal folder path for this cache across operating systems and custom installations, so use the client control rather than deleting a guessed folder.

Clear the download cache in Steam

  1. Open the Steam client.
  2. Select Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  3. Select Clear Cache and confirm the prompt if shown.
  4. Sign in to Steam again when prompted.

Steam says this flushes locally cached configuration data so the client can retrieve it again from Steam servers. The reset does not affect currently installed games, but you will need to log in again afterward. Steam Support explains what clearing the download cache does; its download troubleshooting guidance also describes the reset.

Why there is no single download-cache folder to give

Steam’s official support guidance describes the cache-reset feature, but does not establish one exact internal download-cache directory for every operating system and installation. Steam installations and game libraries can be placed in different locations, and the word “cache” can refer to several kinds of Steam data. Avoid deleting a folder based only on its name.

Steam folders that are easy to confuse

Location What it is for What it is not
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon Default Windows folder for installed game files. Not a universal download-cache path.
C:Program Files (x86)Steam Default Windows Steam installation location. Not necessarily where Steam is installed if you chose another location.
~/Library/Application Support/Steam Steam data location referenced in Steam’s macOS removal and reinstall instructions; its SteamApps folder holds game downloads and some local save files. Not documented as a universal cache directory.
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata Default Linux Steam Cloud userdata directory listed by Steam. Not the download cache.
appcache/httpcache An example of a cache-named directory mentioned in a ValveSoftware Linux issue. Not current, official cross-platform documentation for the download-cache location.

Steam documents the default Windows game installation folder and lets users choose other library locations. Its Windows installation guidance gives the default install location. The Mac folder appears in Steam’s Mac removal and reinstall guidance, while the Linux userdata location is listed in Steam Cloud troubleshooting. The cache-named example comes from a 2014 ValveSoftware Linux issue, not a current universal path guide.

Find where your installed games are stored

If you are looking for game files rather than the cache Steam clears, open Settings > Storage. Review the listed library drives and folders to find the location for your installed games. The Windows path above is only the default; a library may be on another drive or in a folder you added.

If clearing the cache does not solve the problem

Choose the repair action that matches the issue instead of deleting Steam folders manually:

  • For a library-folder permission problem, use Steam’s library-folder repair guidance.
  • For suspected corruption in a particular installed game, verify that game’s files.
  • For a download or startup issue, use the built-in cache reset first; it targets cached client configuration data, not installed game files.

Steam separates these troubleshooting steps in its download-cache guidance and library storage guidance.
