Black & White (2001)
Lionhead Studios developed the original Black & White, which Electronic Arts published for Microsoft Windows in 2001. It combines god-game, artificial-life, simulation and strategy systems: you act as a god, influence a world and train an avatar creature.

Black & White 2 (2005)
Lionhead Studios developed Black & White 2, also published by Electronic Arts. Released in October 2005, it expands the god-game idea with city building, controllable units and more conventional real-time-strategy warfare.
Those details are useful when checking a listing. A game called “Black & White” is not automatically Lionhead’s 2001 title, and a listing that omits the developer, publisher, platform or original artwork deserves extra scrutiny.
Is Black & White on Steam?
No verified official Steam purchase listing for Lionhead’s 2001 game was found in the current availability check. Steam search results can include a different title that happens to use the words “Black & White”; do not rely on the name alone. Open the product details and confirm the developer, publisher, release identity and screenshots before assuming you have found the classic game.
The same check found no verified current product page for either game through the EA/Origin/EA app paths or the Epic Games Store. That does not prove a future release is impossible; it describes the storefront status checked on 19 October 2026.

Is the GOG page a real purchase listing?
GOG has a Black & White 2 Dreamlist page. A Dreamlist is a request page where users ask GOG to add a game. It is not a catalog entry, does not establish that GOG has publishing rights, and does not provide a checkout flow, current price or downloadable installer.
Comments on that page discuss the games’ absence from the normal catalog and mention community patches. Those comments are community discussion, not an official re-release or proof that a particular download is authorized. A patch can help an existing owner with compatibility, but it does not turn an unauthorized copy into a legal one.
Which legal buying options exist?
There are three broad listing types. Only one is presently practical, and each has a different level of authentication.

The table is deliberately conservative. There is no verified price, stock figure or authorized key channel to quote for either game, so a seller’s current offer must be checked independently rather than filled in from an old listing or search snippet.

How to buy an original disc safely
A used disc is not automatically genuine or complete. Use this sequence before committing money.
- Identify the exact title. Ask whether the listing is Black & White (2001) or Black & White 2 (2005), not another game with the same words. Confirm that it is the Windows PC release and note whether it is a standard edition, a collection or an expansion bundle.
- Request photographs. Ask for clear photographs of the disc’s data side, label, case, manual and any registration card or serial sticker. A stock image, cropped cover or “disc only” description leaves important questions unanswered.
- Check the disc condition. Look for deep scratches, cracks around the hub, delamination, heavy label damage or signs that the disc is a copied recordable medium. A readable-looking label is not proof that the data side is usable.
- Confirm the key situation. Ask whether a serial number, product key or activation code is included, whether it is printed on the original packaging, and whether the seller knows if it has already been redeemed. Do not treat a seller-generated “lifetime key” as equivalent to an original code.
- Confirm region and edition. Ask where the copy was originally sold and whether the disc, manual and key belong to the same edition. Region differences can affect language, packaging, activation and support.
- Read the return policy. Make sure the seller accepts returns when the disc is unreadable, the key is missing or the item is materially different from the description. Save the listing text and photographs until the transaction is complete.
- Use a protected payment method. Choose a method that documents the transaction and provides a dispute route. Avoid direct transfers that remove practical recourse if the item never arrives or is counterfeit.
- Inspect on arrival. Compare the received disc and packaging with the listing before attempting installation. Photograph damage immediately and contact the seller within the stated return window if anything is missing.
Questions to ask a resale seller
- Is this the Lionhead Studios Windows release, and which year and edition is printed on the disc or box?
- Are the original disc, case, manual and serial or activation materials all included?
- Has the disc been tested for reading, and are there any cracks, resurfacing marks or label damage?
- Which country or region was the copy sold in?
- Will you accept a return if the disc cannot be read or the included key has already been used?
- Are the photographs of the actual item rather than a catalog image?
A seller who cannot answer basic identity and condition questions may still possess a genuine copy, but you would be buying without the evidence needed to judge it. Move on unless the price and return protection compensate for that uncertainty; for these unavailable games, scarcity is not a reason to skip authentication.
How to spot a misleading digital offer
Same-name storefront results
Search engines and store catalogs can surface unrelated games, soundtracks or software using “Black & White.” Check the developer, publisher, release year and screenshots. If those details do not identify Lionhead’s game, it is not the title you want.

A key sold without original media or a verifiable publisher source may be unused, already redeemed, region-restricted or obtained through an unauthorized channel. A countdown timer, unusually low price or promise of permanent access does not establish legitimacy.

Download-only claims
“Instant download” language is not proof of an official release. Ask which company issued the license and where the account or code can be redeemed. If the answer is only that a community member uploaded files, the offer does not provide the publisher authentication you need.
Confusing patches with a re-release
Community fixes and compatibility guides can be useful after you own a lawful copy. They do not create a new license, replace missing original media or validate a third-party download. Keep ownership and technical troubleshooting as separate decisions.

A resale listing is worth investigating when it offers original media and a traceable transaction, but legality and usability are separate questions. The seller must be offering an authentic copy, and you still need to know whether its edition and region work with your computer. A genuine disc can be old, scratched, incomplete or dependent on a serial that is not included.

Likewise, finding installation files online does not by itself prove that the files are authorized. Do not infer permission from the age of the game, the fact that it is no longer sold digitally or the existence of a community forum discussing it.

Compatibility expectations after purchase
Both games were designed for historical Windows environments. Buying an original disc establishes what you bought; it does not guarantee that a modern Windows installation will launch it without adjustment. Check the game’s edition and documentation first, then use compatibility guidance that is clearly presented as troubleshooting rather than as a replacement for the original license.
Do not assume that a historical Mac release remains available merely because the game once had a Mac version. No current Mac App Store purchase was verified, and the old release should not be treated as a currently supported listing.
A day-of-purchase checklist
- Search for the exact Lionhead title and year.
- Reject same-name results that identify a different developer or game.
- For GOG, distinguish a Dreamlist request from a catalog product with a purchase button.
- For a disc, obtain photographs of the actual item and verify disc, packaging and key status.
- Confirm region, edition, condition and return terms in writing.
- Do not pay for a download or key whose publisher source cannot be verified.
- Recheck the live listing, seller reputation, stock and price on the day of purchase; all of those can change.
Bottom line for each game
Black & White (2001)
No verified Steam, GOG, EA app or Epic Games Store purchase page was found in the current check. Investigate an original second-hand Windows disc and verify its identity, completeness, region, condition and return protection.
Black & White 2 (2005)
GOG’s Dreamlist confirms that users are requesting an official release, not buying one. With no verified digital checkout page found, the same second-hand original-disc approach is the defensible legal option to investigate.
Because seller legitimacy, stock, pricing and rights-holder decisions are volatile, perform these checks again immediately before paying rather than relying on an old search result or a community comment.
