Download Minecraft Forge from the official site at files.minecraftforge.net. Choose the Minecraft version your game and mods require, then pick the Installer file. Players should not use the MDK, which is a development kit for people building mods.
The rest of this guide explains how to pick the right version and build, which Java runtime to install, and what to do when the installer does not work as expected.
Get Forge only from the official file site
The Forge project publishes its downloads at https://files.minecraftforge.net/. That domain is the canonical source. Third-party download mirrors may bundle outdated builds, modified installers, or unrelated software, so avoid them even when they rank highly in search results.
Choose the Minecraft version first
Forge is built for one specific Minecraft version at a time. The official site publishes separate listing pages for individual Minecraft releases, and each page offers its own set of Forge builds. Start from the version your game and mods require, not from the newest build on the front page. A mod written for 1.20.1 will generally not load on 1.21.5, and the reverse is also true.

Check the version your modpack or mod page names. If a mod’s documentation says “1.20.1,” pick the 1.20.1 listing on the Forge site.
Installer or MDK: pick the right file
The Forge site offers more than one file type, and they serve different people:
- Installer is the file to download if you want to play Minecraft with mods. It installs Forge into the standard Minecraft launcher environment, after which you select a Forge profile in the launcher.
- MDK means Mod Developer Kit. It is a development template for people writing their own Forge mods. Forge’s own documentation directs developers to download it from the same file site, but it is not needed to play.
Recommended or Latest: which build to take
When a version page offers both Recommended and Latest builds, the project’s official guidance is that Latest builds “may have newer features but may be more unstable as a result.” For most players, Recommended is the safer default. Choose Latest only if you need a specific fix or feature that appears in that newer build and you are prepared to troubleshoot.
Build numbers change frequently. At the time this guide was prepared, the official 1.21.5 listing showed Latest 55.1.14 and Recommended 55.1.0, and the 1.20.1 listing showed Latest 47.4.26 and Recommended 47.4.10. Treat those figures as a snapshot, and read the live page for your own version before downloading.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Java requirements by Minecraft version
Forge depends on a specific Java runtime, and the required version depends on the Minecraft version you select. The Forge project lists the mappings below. They are tied to specific releases, so confirm them against the project page for your version before installing.
| Minecraft version | Required Java (per Forge project) |
|---|---|
| 26.1 and later | Java 25 |
| 1.20.6 through 1.21.11 | Java 21 |
| 1.18 through 1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.17.1 | Java 16 |
| 1.16.5 and earlier | Java 8 |
Installing a newer Java than the table requires does not reliably solve the problem. Match the version the table lists for your Minecraft release.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
Install Minecraft Launcher first
Forge installs into the official launcher, so you need Minecraft Launcher on the same computer. The official Minecraft page offers the launcher through the Microsoft Store or as a download from Minecraft.net. Install it, sign in, and start the game once with the vanilla version so the launcher creates its folders.
Installing Forge with the Installer
- Confirm that the Java version for your Minecraft release is installed, using the table above.
- Go to files.minecraftforge.net, select your Minecraft version, and choose Installer next to either Recommended or Latest.
- Run the downloaded
.jarinstaller. If it does not open on double-click, right-click it and choose the option to open with Java. - In the installer window, select Install client, leave the directory set to your Minecraft folder, and click OK.
- Wait for the confirmation message, then close the installer.
- Open Minecraft Launcher, choose the Forge profile from the profile list, and press Play.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The installer does not open. The Java runtime is missing or is the wrong version for your Minecraft release. Install the version from the table and retry.
- The Forge profile does not appear in the launcher. Run the installer again and confirm the target directory is your Minecraft folder. Then restart the launcher.
- The game crashes after a mod is added. The mod was probably built for a different Minecraft or Forge version. Compare the mod’s stated version with the Forge build you installed.
- The Latest build fails but Recommended works. Switch to the Recommended installer for the same Minecraft version.
The Bottom Line
Go to files.minecraftforge.net, pick your exact Minecraft version, and download the Installer (Recommended build unless you need a feature only Latest has). Install the matching Java version first.
