Every inventory expansion in Over the Hill is bought from Crazy Günther, not found as a map pickup. Drive or fast-travel to his mechanic camp, park in the service area, choose Access Merchant, open the Upgrade tab, and select Inventory / Tool Slots. The three purchases increase one vehicle from the starting one tool slot to a maximum of four.
The complete Tool Slots upgrade path
Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp is the only location you need for inventory expansion. Once the vehicle is inside the camp’s service area, the merchant interface displays the next available Tool Slots upgrade. Purchases are sequential: the second stage remains locked until the first is bought, and the third remains locked until the second is complete.

How to reach the upgrade merchant
Drive to Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp
Use the world map to navigate to Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp. You can drive there normally or use fast travel when that option is available. Inventory expansion is attached to the mechanic service, so searching trails, scenic points, challenge routes, or other points of interest will not reveal a separate Tool Slots pickup.

Enter the service area
Park the vehicle in the marked service area at the camp. If the merchant prompt does not appear, reposition the vehicle fully inside the area rather than stopping beside the camp or on the approach road. The game associates the upgrade menu with the serviced vehicle.
Open the correct merchant screen
- At the service area, select Access Merchant.
- Switch from the default merchant page to the Upgrade tab.
- Choose Inventory / Tool Slots.
- Select the highest unlocked stage you can afford.
- Confirm the purchase and wait for the capacity shown in the menu to update.
Only the next stage is normally available. If a later stage is greyed out, that is expected: buy the earlier stage first, then return to the list to unlock the next one.
What a Tool Slot actually stores
Tool Slots govern how many selectable tools the current vehicle can carry. They do not increase the vehicle’s fuel, cargo, durability, traction, suspension, water resistance, protection, or winch range. Those are separate upgrade categories.

Lewis Maddison’s TechRadar description specifically notes that the winch can be used repeatedly and is always in the inventory. The Tool Slots count instead applies to the equipment you choose for the expedition.
Selectable equipment can include:
- A portable anchor or winch point for creating a new attachment point.
- Wooden planks for bridging gaps or improving a difficult crossing.
- A portable camp for establishing a temporary field position.
- A repair kit for dealing with vehicle damage away from the mechanic.
- A car jack for recovering a vehicle that has become badly positioned.
- Meteorite Radar for locating meteorite-related discoveries.
- Camp Tool equipment used for expedition utility.
Because the permanent winch is separate, even the one-slot starting setup can support basic recovery. Additional slots let you carry recovery equipment and exploration or objective-specific tools at the same time instead of returning to a camp to swap them.
Tool Slots are saved per vehicle
An upgrade purchased at Crazy Günther’s applies to the vehicle that is being serviced. Tool Slots are tracked per vehicle; they do not automatically transfer when you change vehicles. A second vehicle therefore keeps its own starting capacity until you purchase its upgrades separately.

This is the most important ownership check before spending Pebbles. Confirm that the vehicle shown in the service area is the one you intend to use for the next series of expeditions. If you buy an expansion on a utility vehicle and later switch to another vehicle, the second vehicle will not inherit the additional slots.

A fully upgraded first vehicle does not mean every vehicle in your garage is fully expanded.
How to decide when to buy each stage
Pebbles are the game’s upgrade currency. TechRadar describes them as rewards earned through exploration and activities, while discoveries, recoveries, challenge trails, points of interest, and wildlife or scenic finds all provide practical ways to build the balance used at the mechanic.

The practical trigger is not a particular map region or story milestone. Buy earlier when repeated trips to the mechanic interrupt your route; delay when the same Pebbles would solve a mobility or survival problem that currently blocks progress.
Useful loadouts at each capacity
One slot: basic recovery
With only one selectable slot, choose the tool that addresses the immediate purpose of the trip. A repair kit is sensible for a damage-prone route, while a portable anchor or car jack is better when recovery is the main concern. The permanent winch remains available regardless of this choice.
Two slots: recovery plus one task tool
The first expansion allows a recovery item and one objective-specific item together. A portable anchor paired with wooden planks supports difficult crossings, while a repair kit paired with a car jack covers two common recovery problems. Choose the pair based on terrain rather than carrying two tools that solve the same failure.

Three slots: a general expedition kit
Three selectable slots support a recovery tool, a route-construction tool, and one exploration or objective tool. For example, a portable anchor, wooden planks, and Meteorite Radar can cover positioning, crossings, and discovery work without a return trip. A repair kit can replace one of those when damage is the dominant risk.
Four slots: long-range flexibility
The maximum capacity is most useful for longer expeditions where camp access is limited or objectives change during the same outing. A balanced four-tool setup can combine a portable anchor, wooden planks, a repair kit, and either Meteorite Radar, a portable camp, a car jack, or Camp Tool equipment. The best fourth item depends on the route; the value comes from avoiding a forced resupply trip.
Common mistakes and fixes
Looking for a world pickup
Symptom: You search map icons, caves, or scenic locations for an inventory upgrade and find nothing.
Fix: Return to Crazy Günther’s mechanic camp. Tool Slots are a merchant upgrade accessed through the service area, not a collectible.
Opening the wrong menu
Symptom: You can access the merchant but cannot find inventory capacity.
Fix: Switch to the Upgrade tab and select Inventory / Tool Slots. The category is separate from driving-stat upgrades.

Expecting all stages to be available immediately
Symptom: The next price is visible, but later stages are locked.
Fix: Purchase stages in order. The interface intentionally locks later capacity increases until the preceding stage is owned.
Buying for the wrong vehicle
Symptom: A different vehicle still has fewer slots after you paid for an expansion.
Fix: Service the vehicle you actually plan to drive. Tool Slots are stored per vehicle, not as a universal account upgrade.
Assuming the winch uses a slot
Symptom: You count the winch when deciding how many selectable tools to bring.

Fix: Exclude the reusable winch from that calculation. It is always in the inventory and does not occupy selectable Tool Slots.

Arriving without enough Pebbles
Symptom: The correct stage is visible but cannot be purchased.
Fix: Complete exploration activities, recoveries, challenge trails, points of interest, and wildlife or scenic discoveries, then return to the mechanic camp. Pebbles come from play activities rather than from a separate inventory-upgrade quest.

- Confirm the vehicle you want to upgrade is parked in the service area.
- Open Access Merchant, then the Upgrade tab.

- Verify that you are purchasing the next stage in sequence.
- Choose tools for the route, remembering that the reusable winch is always available.
- Before switching vehicles, remember that its Tool Slots may be lower because capacity does not carry over.
For a single vehicle, completing all three stages is the route from one selectable tool to the four-tool maximum. The decision to buy immediately or save Pebbles depends on whether extra equipment or vehicle performance will remove the bigger obstacle on your next expedition.
