On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The complete system-software version shown on that screen is the firmware value to record before you investigate an emulator. This check is free, takes less than a minute, and does not install anything. Sony also displays a beta system-software version in the same place. Do not use the nearby update screen, an “Update Available” notice, or a release-history page as a substitute for the version installed on your particular console.

Write down the entire string, including every number, period and hyphen. Then compare it with the documentation for the exact emulator project, your PS5 model (original, Slim or Pro), and the installation method you intend to use. A firmware number by itself cannot prove that an emulator setup is compatible.

Where is my PS5 firmware version?

The installed value is under Console Information, not under the command that downloads updates. Sony documents this menu path for viewing system software, including a beta build. Use the following steps from the PS5 home screen:

  1. Press the PS button if necessary and return to the PS5 home screen.
  2. Open Settings (the gear icon in the upper-right corner).
  3. Select System.
  4. Choose System Software.
  5. Open Console Information.
  6. Read the value beside the system-software version and copy it exactly. Include leading zeroes, periods and hyphens; do not shorten it to the first two numbers.

Sony’s instructions show this route in its PS5 system-software beta documentation: view the official menu instructions. The screen reports what is installed on that console at that moment. It does not report what Sony currently offers for download, what another PS5 owns, or what a third-party project calls a “supported” release.

What should I record?

Keep the complete text in a note and, if you are following a project guide, record the console model at the same time. A useful note contains the model designation from the console or its packaging, the exact system-software string, and the date you checked it. That prevents a shortened value such as “13.60” from being confused with a complete Sony release identifier or with a project’s internal shorthand.

Can I see a beta version there?

Yes. Sony says an installed beta version is visible in Console Information through the same menu path. A beta label is still a description of the software currently installed; it is not evidence that an emulator project supports that beta.

Does checking firmware update my PS5?

No. Opening Console Information only reads information. The separate System Software Update and Settings screen contains Sony’s update controls, so do not select an update command merely to discover your current version.

Screen or notice What it tells you What it does not establish
Console Information The system-software version installed on your PS5, including a beta version if one is installed. Whether a specific emulator supports that version.
System Software Update and Settings Where Sony places Update System Software and automatic-update controls. That an offered update is already installed.
“Update Available” or an offered download That Sony has software available for your console to download or install. Your current installed version, until you read Console Information.
Sony’s release-history page A published release listing, which can change as Sony adds entries. The version on every console or a third-party compatibility guarantee.

If you only need the number, stop after reading Console Information. Selecting Update System Software can begin a download or installation process and is a different action from checking.

What does the PS5 version number mean?

Firmware is common shorthand, while Sony generally labels the item system software. The long string is the useful identifier for your comparison. Preserve it exactly rather than translating it into a shorter project label.

On October 30, 2026, Sony’s US release-history page displayed 26.07-14.20.00 at the top of its list. That is the latest entry shown on that page at the time of the check, not a claim that every PS5 had that version installed and not an emulator requirement. Your Console Information screen remains the authority for your own console.

Why a release-history number is not a compatibility list

A release-history page answers “What has Sony listed?” An emulator project’s documentation answers “What does this project’s current build support?” Those are different questions. Sony can publish a newer system release after a project has documented its supported range, and a project can use shorthand that does not map cleanly to Sony’s full identifier.

For that reason, do not infer that every console on 26.07-14.20.00 works, that every project accepts a value written as 13.60, or that an older number is automatically suitable. Treat the release listing as context only, then follow the maintainer’s current instructions.

Will this emulator work on my PS5 firmware?

You cannot answer that from the firmware number alone. First decide where the emulator will run, then identify the exact project and build. A setup that runs an emulator on a modified PS5 has different requirements from software that emulates PS5 games on a separate PC.

Emulator running on the PS5

For a PS5-based setup, the installed system-software version is an initial eligibility check. You must also match the project’s supported firmware range, hardware model, required modification method and installation steps. A project may support an original PS5 or a Slim at one set of releases and list different support for a PS5 Pro.

PS5 software running on a PC

If you mean a PC emulator intended to run PS5 software, the PS5 console’s firmware number is usually not the controlling requirement for the PC application. The PC project will specify its own operating-system, processor, graphics, dump and build requirements. Do not transfer a PS5-console exploit or firmware list to that separate use case.

Use a project’s own documentation

The ps5-linux project documentation is a useful example of why precision matters: its maintainers publish separate hardware and firmware information for the environments they support. It documents Linux and emulator use on supported PS5 hardware; it is not a universal compatibility table for every PS5 emulator. Read the exact README and release notes for the project you intend to install, and check when those pages were last changed.

How do I compare my version with an emulator project’s requirements?

Make the comparison in a fixed order so that a promising number does not hide a model or installation mismatch.

  1. Capture the complete installed value. Use Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and copy the full string.
  2. Identify the console model. Confirm whether your hardware is an original PS5, a Slim or a Pro. Do not assume that a list for one model applies to another.
  3. Read the project’s current supported-version list. Look for the exact full version or range, the date of the documentation and any distinction between retail, beta or development builds.
  4. Check the project’s installation method. A supported firmware may still require a particular entry point, payload, Linux image, storage arrangement or peripheral.
  5. Check build-specific notes. A new project release can add or remove support without changing Sony’s menu labels. Use the requirements for the build you will actually install.
  6. Stop if any requirement is unclear. Do not treat a partial match as confirmation. Ask the project maintainers or wait for explicit documentation rather than experimenting with an update or downgrade.

Keep a copy of the project page alongside your recorded version. Compatibility statements can change, while the value on your Console Information screen describes only the present state of your console.

Should I pause automatic updates while I check?

You can inspect the automatic-update controls, but changing them is a tradeoff rather than a guaranteed way to preserve compatibility. Sony recommends keeping system software current for normal operation and security. Its PS5 Pro manual states: “Always update to the latest version.” That recommendation does not mean a third-party project supports the newest release.

To review the controls, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The page includes options for downloading update files automatically and installing update files automatically. Sony describes these settings in its automatic-updates instructions.

  • Leaving automatic updates enabled: follows Sony’s normal security and support guidance, but the console could move to a release that your chosen project has not documented.
  • Disabling or limiting automatic updates: gives you time to verify a project’s requirements, but can leave the console on older software and may delay security fixes, features or online-service support.
  • Checking manually: lets you decide when to read the project documentation and when, if appropriate, to install an official update.

Do not promise that switching off an automatic option freezes every possible change. A user can still select an update manually, and project-specific instructions may impose additional conditions. Make the decision only after you understand the security and support consequences.

What if my PS5 has already updated?

An update is not a normal undo button. The ps5-linux maintainers state, “Obviously you cannot downgrade.” Treat that as the project’s warning not to plan around a rollback. Sony’s reinstall process also deletes console data, so reinstalling system software is not a casual method for returning to an earlier firmware.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Sony’s system-software guidance explains the reinstall and its consequences: read the official PS5 system-software instructions. Do not download an unofficial file or follow a downgrade claim that is not documented by the project and Sony.

Back up before any high-risk change

If the project instructions require a modification or reinstall, review Sony’s backup procedure first. Sony says a backup can use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a USB extended-storage device formatted for game data cannot also be used for this backup. The PS5 USB backup instructions also state that restoring requires the same or a newer system-software version. Therefore, a backup is protection against data loss, not a promise that you can restore an older firmware.

  • Confirm the USB drive’s format and available capacity for the data you actually need to save.
  • Do not assume a drive used as PS5 extended game storage is ready for a system backup.
  • Complete and verify the backup before beginning an operation that can erase data.
  • Keep your recorded firmware and model information with the backup notes.

Do I need to buy anything to check the version?

No. The on-console check requires no purchase, USB device or computer. Hardware belongs in the article only if you proceed to a specific, compatible installation or make a backup.

Conditional hardware for the documented ps5-linux setup

The ps5-linux README lists a minimum 64 GB USB drive, preferably an external SSD, plus a USB keyboard and mouse for its documented setup. That requirement applies to that project, not to the version check and not to every emulator. If you search for storage, use the project’s current capacity and interface requirements rather than assuming a particular brand or model.

Optional Linux M.2 storage

The project describes optional dedicated Linux M.2 storage. Sony has separate specifications and installation guidance for PS5 expansion storage and advises using the latest system software for its supported workflow. An M.2 drive is not a way to preserve an old firmware, bypass Sony’s update policy or make an unsupported emulator compatible. Verify your model, firmware and the project’s current instructions before purchasing or installing one.

What should I do immediately before an emulator installation?

  • Copy the full value from Console Information; do not rely on memory or a notification.
  • Record whether the console is an original model, Slim or Pro.
  • Define the target clearly: emulator running on the PS5, or PS5 software running on a PC.
  • Open the exact project’s current documentation and match its firmware, model and build requirements.
  • Check whether the instructions require a specific modification, USB capacity, keyboard, mouse, Linux image or storage arrangement.
  • Review automatic-update settings and decide whether the security tradeoff of delaying an update is acceptable.
  • Back up data before any operation that can erase or reinstall system software.
  • Do not attempt a downgrade unless the project and Sony explicitly document a supported path; the cited project says an update cannot be downgraded.

If the project’s list does not explicitly include your complete version and model, the accurate result is “compatibility not established,” not “compatible.” Wait for clearer documentation or choose a setup whose requirements you can verify.

How we picked the instructions and cautions

This guide prioritizes Sony’s on-console menu labels for reading and updating system software, Sony’s automatic-update and backup rules, and project-maintainer documentation for model- and firmware-specific emulator prerequisites. It separates an installed value from a release listing, distinguishes PS5-hosted emulation from PC emulation, and includes hardware only where a cited installation or backup procedure calls for it. No population success rate or universal compatibility claim is established by the available documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check my PS5 version without installing a beta or update?

Yes. Reading Console Information is an informational action and does not enroll the console in a beta or start an update. Leave the update command untouched unless you have already compared the offered release with the project requirements.

Is Sony’s 26.07-14.20.00 release the version my emulator needs?

Not necessarily. That value was the top entry on Sony’s US release-history page on October 30, 2026; it is not a project compatibility statement. Only the emulator maintainer can define whether a particular build supports your complete version and console model.

Can a PS5 backup restore an older firmware after an emulator experiment?

No guarantee exists. Sony says restoration requires the same or a newer system-software version, and reinstalling system software deletes console data. A backup protects personal data; it is not a firmware rollback mechanism.

What if the project lists only a shortened number such as 13.60?

Treat the shorthand as ambiguous until the maintainer explains how it maps to Sony’s full identifier. Send the project your complete Console Information value and model rather than assuming that every release beginning with those digits is accepted.
